Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose speaker wire by the length of the cable run and the speaker’s nominal impedance. For a typical home run of up to 50 feet to a standard 8-ohm speaker, Crutchfield says 16 AWG is sufficient; for longer runs, lower-impedance speakers, or high-current amplifiers, its guidance points to 14 AWG. A more conservative Audioholics table recommends shorter maximum runs for 14 AWG, so treat any distance figure as a recommendation—not a universal cutoff.
What speaker wire gauge should you use?
For ordinary home audio, 16 AWG is a practical baseline for runs up to 50 feet when driving a standard 8-ohm speaker, according to Crutchfield’s home speaker-wire guide. Consider 14 AWG for a longer route, a lower-impedance speaker, or a high-current amplifier. If you want a more conservative low-loss reference, compare your run with Audioholics’ 14 AWG recommendations below.

AWG numbering runs opposite to thickness: a smaller number means a thicker conductor. Thus, 12 AWG is thicker than 14 AWG, and thicker wire has lower resistance. The right choice depends on both cable length and speaker load; a gauge recommendation without those details can be misleading.

How length and impedance affect the choice
Speaker cable has resistance. As the cable run gets longer, its total resistance increases; with a lower-impedance load, that resistance becomes more consequential. Audioholics describes resistance as the key speaker-cable metric: series resistance reduces the power delivered to the speaker and can make the speaker’s impedance variations more influential on frequency response. The company illustrates the scale by noting that nearly 1 ohm of cable resistance would be needed to reduce signal level by 1 dB for an 8-ohm speaker. That is an example, not a universal tolerance or gauge rule.
#1 Best Overall
- IN THE BOX: 16 gauge speaker wire cable (100 feet)
- CLEAR AUDIO: Plastic jacket helps ensure high-quality undistorted signals to and from audio equipment
- CONVENIENT: Connects audio speakers to an A/V receiver or amplifier
- SIMPLE INSTALL: Black line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
- EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
Audioholics’ recommendations for 14 AWG show how its suggested distance changes with nominal speaker impedance:
| Nominal speaker impedance | Audioholics’ recommended 14 AWG run |
|---|---|
| 8 ohms | 35 feet |
| 6 ohms | 30 feet |
| 4 ohms | 20 feet |
These are Audioholics’ recommendations, not mandatory limits that apply to every system. They are more conservative than Crutchfield’s 16 AWG baseline for runs up to 50 feet to standard 8-ohm speakers. The guidance uses different thresholds, so decide which recommendation basis fits your needs rather than treating the figures as interchangeable guarantees.

Choose a gauge for your installation
- Measure the real route. Estimate the cable path from the amplifier’s speaker output to the speaker, following the route around walls and furniture. Room dimensions alone may understate the cable length.
- Check the speaker’s nominal impedance. Find it in the speaker specifications. For the same run length, a lower-impedance load is a reason to favor thicker wire.
- Pick a recommendation basis. For a typical run to a standard 8-ohm speaker, Crutchfield’s 16 AWG guidance covers up to 50 feet. For a longer run, lower impedance, or high-current amplifier, Crutchfield points toward 14 AWG. For a conservative comparison, use the Audioholics distances in the table.
- Check unusual cases rather than guessing. If your setup falls between listed examples or the equipment has unusual requirements, follow the equipment maker’s connection guidance and calculate or measure cable resistance. The cited guidance does not establish one mandatory gauge for every configuration.
- Verify what you are buying. Check the seller’s stated conductor material and actual gauge; do not rely only on a product name or appearance.
Do not confuse speaker wire with amplifier power wire
Speaker wire carries the amplifier’s output to the speakers. In contrast, an amplifier power-wire chart sizes the car’s power and ground cables, which depend on factors such as total RMS amplifier output, current draw, amplifier efficiency, and supply-wire length. Crutchfield’s automotive amplifier wire gauge chart covers that separate application; it does not determine the gauge of the speaker-output cable.
Crutchfield’s warning that same-gauge copper-clad aluminum (CCA) carries less current than copper is also about automotive power wiring. Keep that ampacity guidance in its proper context rather than applying the power-wire chart directly to speaker-wire sizing.

What to compare when shopping
Compare wire options using the same route length and speaker load. The useful details are the stated AWG, the conductor material named by the seller, your speaker’s nominal impedance, and the route length you measured. A suitable wire should provide a sufficiently low-resistance run while remaining practical to install; the cited guidance does not establish that a brand or decorative construction improves audible performance.
