Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose Dell factory recovery if you want to restore your PC to its Dell-shipped Windows and software configuration and your model supports that recovery option. Choose a clean Windows installation if you want a fresh, generic Windows setup without Dell’s factory customizations. Both can erase data, so make a backup and verify you can open it before starting.
How the two options differ
| What matters | Dell factory recovery | Clean Windows installation |
|---|---|---|
| Result | Aims to restore the Windows operating system and default software to the state in which the PC shipped, using an applicable Dell recovery option. | Installs Windows from Microsoft installation media as a fresh setup. |
| Dell apps and customizations | Restores the factory image’s default applications and software. | Removes manufacturer customizations and factory-installed apps. |
| Files, apps, and settings | Factory reset deletes drive data and removes installed programs and drivers. Back up first. | Removes personal files, applications, manufacturer customizations, and settings. |
| What you need | A supported Dell recovery option or the appropriate Dell recovery image. Availability and choices vary by model and system state. | Windows installation media and a Dell PC that can boot from it. Microsoft’s media-creation procedure uses a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB; creating the media erases its contents. |
| Best fit | You want Dell’s original software configuration or a supported Dell recovery path for a PC that will not start. | You want a fresh Windows environment without OEM customizations and are prepared to reinstall apps and set up the PC again. |
Dell describes its SupportAssist OS Recovery factory option as downloading and installing the operating system and software “to the state they were in when your computer was shipped from the Dell factory.” See Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery guide. Microsoft says a clean installation removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and changes made in Settings in its Windows installation-media instructions.

Which option should you choose?
Choose Dell factory recovery to restore the original Dell setup
Use the applicable Dell recovery path if you want the software configuration that came with your computer. Dell says SupportAssist OS Recovery is available only on certain models, and its choices can depend on the system’s condition. Check compatibility and the current instructions for your exact service tag or model in Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery guidance.
Dell’s OS Recovery Image is another route, but it targets the operating system originally shipped with the PC. Check Dell’s OS Recovery Image instructions before downloading or creating recovery media. Qualcomm-based Dell computers do not support SupportAssist OS Recovery; Dell says to try Windows Push-Button Reset first.

Choose a clean install for a fresh, non-Dell Windows setup
A clean install is the better fit if you deliberately want to remove manufacturer customizations and begin with Windows installation media. You will need to set up Windows afterward and reinstall the apps, drivers, and other software you need. Microsoft’s clean-install instructions explain what is removed.
Consider a less disruptive repair if Windows still works
If your PC starts and the problem may be limited, check Windows repair and recovery choices before choosing a full reset or clean installation. Microsoft lists recovery options in Recovery options in Windows. Its Reset your PC guidance describes a separate Windows feature: Reset this PC can offer Keep my files or Remove everything, and cloud download or local reinstall. It is not the same thing as Dell factory recovery or a clean install from bootable media.

If the PC will not boot
First check whether SupportAssist OS Recovery is available for your model and system state; on supported systems it may launch after repeated failed boots. If it is unavailable, consider Dell recovery media or Microsoft installation media according to your goal. Follow the current instructions for your specific model rather than assuming every Dell uses the same key sequence or recovery menu.
Prepare before resetting or reinstalling
- Back up your files and verify the backup. Copy important data to a location you can access after reinstalling, such as an external drive or cloud storage. Dell and Microsoft both advise backing up before recovery or reinstallation. Microsoft’s Windows backup guidance describes backup options.
- Save your BitLocker recovery key. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, make sure you can retrieve the recovery key before you begin. Microsoft includes this in its reset preparation guidance.
- Check the Windows edition and activation. Before a clean install, note the edition currently licensed for the PC. Microsoft advises installing the edition that matches the digital license. A digital license ordinarily allows the same edition to be reinstalled on the same device without entering a product key, though major hardware changes or an edition mismatch can complicate activation. See Activate Windows.
- Prepare installation media only if you need it. Microsoft’s media-creation procedure calls for a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB. Creating the media erases files already on that drive. This USB is for the clean-install media path; it is not required for every built-in Dell or Windows reset option. See Create installation media for Windows.
- Make a reinstall list. Record the apps, installers, drivers, and license details you will need afterward. Dell notes that non-factory applications must be reinstalled and separately licensed software may request its key again after a factory reset.
- Confirm the Dell procedure for your PC. Check SupportAssist OS Recovery compatibility and current recovery instructions against the exact model or service tag before relying on a Dell recovery route.
What neither option guarantees
A fix for hardware problems
A factory reset or clean install changes software; neither guarantees a repair for a failing drive, memory problem, or other hardware fault. If the same symptoms persist after Windows is restored, investigate the hardware rather than repeating the installation.

Secure erasure for a PC you are giving away
Deleting partitions or removing files during reinstallation is not a promise of standards-grade secure erasure. Microsoft says the Clean data option in Reset this PC is consumer-targeted and does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards; consult its Reset your PC guidance if you are preparing a device for transfer.
