Link expiry or revocation controls access; deleting the stored object, removing its historical versions, clearing replicas and backups, and destroying encryption keys are separate operations. Design and describe each one separately, and don’t promise that a file is gone until you have accounted for every copy your storage configuration can retain.
What “delete-on-read” should mean
There is no single switch that guarantees a file share destroys itself after one read. A secret or signed URL is a bearer credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the authorized object until the URL expires or the service rejects it. Short expiry, narrow scope, and careful handling reduce exposure, but expiry only closes an access route; it does not establish that the stored bytes were deleted. OWASP’s cloud storage guidance discusses signed URL risks, leakage, and the need to verify removal.

Define the promise in terms of distinct outcomes:
- Access stopped: the recipient can no longer use the link or authorization grant.
- Object deleted: the storage service no longer serves the current object.
- Versions removed: historical object versions are permanently deleted, where the service supports versioning.
- Secondary copies addressed: replicas, snapshots, caches, lifecycle destinations, and backups are handled according to the stated policy.
- Cryptographic erasure completed: all usable key material for retained ciphertext is destroyed, if the design relies on that method.
These outcomes are not interchangeable. A recipient may also save or copy a file after receiving it; server-side controls cannot undo that.

Before implementing storage cleanup, decide what counts as the “read.” Is it the first successful authorization, the start of a download, or a completed transfer? A download can be interrupted, retried, or requested in byte ranges. If the system consumes a share on the first request, a recipient whose connection fails may lose access without receiving the whole file. If it permits retries, the share is not strictly one-read.

- Comprehensive data protection - Back up your media and documents to multiple destinations, and leverage snapshots to protect against malware
- Versatile video surveillance - Protect your home or business with intuitive monitoring, archiving, and analysis tools for up to 30 IP cameras (need to purchase camera license separetly)
- File Server - Replace expensive SharePoint or Dropbox with local file sharing, team folders and permission contro
- Ransomware-Resistant Backup - Protect against malware with immutable snapshots, versioned files and multi-destination backup strategies
Represent the share as an explicit server-side state machine. One useful model is:
created → available → redemption claimed → delivery in progress → consumed
Include separate paths for expired, deletion pending, and deletion complete. Make the transition that claims redemption atomic on the server, so simultaneous requests cannot both win a one-time claim. Treat this as an architectural requirement to validate—not a guarantee supplied by a signed URL. Test simultaneous requests, retries, range requests, and interrupted downloads against the behavior you intend to offer.
Decide how recipients are authorized
Use a grant limited to the specific object and necessary method, with an expiry that matches the delivery window. OWASP’s Secure Cloud Architecture Cheat Sheet and Multi Tenant Security Cheat Sheet describe scoping access to what is needed and applying tenant-aware authorization.

- Quality Material: This drawer lock is made of quality zinc alloy, offering excellent impact resistance and structural stability. Its rust-proof surface makes it suitable for everyday use in home and office environments.
- Universal Size: This desk lock body measures 2.04 x 1.34 inches (52 x 34 mm), with a lock cylinder diameter of 0.85 inches (21.5 mm). It fits standard office desk drawers, filing cabinets, and most wooden furniture. Pre-drilled holes facilitate replacement and installation.
- Antique Bronze Appearance: This desk drawer lock features an antique bronze plating, presenting a retro and elegant design style. It is suitable for dressing tables, filing cabinets, and vintage-style cabinets, combining practicality and decorative appeal.
- Convenient Application: This cabinet lock comes with two keys for easy sharing. The internal mechanical structure operates smoothly, making it suitable for drawers storing documents or personal items.
- Wide Range of Applications: This file cabinet lock uses an embedded structure, so it does not protrude from the furniture surface after installation. It is suitable for drawers and cabinet doors of various furniture, such as wooden or metal office desks, cabinets, wardrobes, and filing cabinets.
A signed URL is convenient, but anyone holding it may be able to use it within its scope and validity. Avoid putting it in logs or exposing it through intermediaries. For sensitive files, an application authorization layer can make redemption and revocation decisions centrally instead of handing the recipient a reusable storage URL. That option means operating the data path yourself; it still cannot prevent an authorized recipient from saving delivered content.
Plan expiry, revocation, and transfers separately
Expiry is evaluated when a request is made, and its effect on a transfer already underway depends on the service. For example, AWS CloudFront checks a signed URL’s expiry at request time: a transfer that began before expiry can finish, while a reconnect or later range request after expiry fails. See AWS’s signed URL documentation. Do not assume that every storage or delivery service behaves the same way.
Specify what happens when a share is revoked or expires while a download is in progress, and test retries and later range requests. If revocation must be centralized, consider checking authorization through your application at delivery time rather than relying only on a previously issued bearer URL.

OWASP warns that old versions, transitioned objects, and replicas can remain after a nominal delete. Its cloud storage testing guidance emphasizes checking the selected configuration and confirming actual removal rather than inferring it from an expired URL.
Understand the storage provider’s deletion semantics
Amazon S3 versioning
In an S3 bucket with versioning enabled, a normal DeleteObject request adds a delete marker; it does not by itself permanently remove the earlier object versions. Permanently deleting a particular version requires its version ID. AWS describes the behavior for unversioned, versioned, and versioning-suspended buckets in the DeleteObject API reference. A deletion workflow must account for every version it intends to remove, not just the current visible object.
S3 Object Lock and retention
S3 Object Lock provides a WORM retention model and requires versioning. A retained or legally held version may not be deletable immediately, so a design subject to those controls cannot honestly promise immediate destruction. Check the bucket’s specific retention configuration and AWS’s Object Lock documentation before defining the promised deletion time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTreat encryption-key deletion as its own operation
Encryption at rest does not make a file disappear when its object is deleted or its link expires. Cryptographic erasure can be part of a deletion design only if all usable copies of the relevant key are removed and no other key can decrypt retained ciphertext. Check key replication, backups, recovery procedures, and any key material retained alongside logs or archived data. OWASP’s Cryptographic Storage Cheat Sheet notes that key management is difficult and that older keys may be retained to decrypt backups.

If using this approach, consider a per-share or per-object key whose lifecycle is isolated from keys needed for other data. Establish what happens to that key in backups and recovery systems before claiming cryptographic erasure. Minimize sensitive content and metadata retained in the first place, as OWASP also recommends in its cryptographic storage guidance.
Make the deletion promise auditable
Document what each status means in user-facing language and in the system. For example, “link expired” should mean the authorization route is no longer valid; it should not be presented as proof that all copies have been destroyed. Track deletion work until the configured storage paths have been addressed, and distinguish a request accepted by a service from a verified deletion outcome. Keep operational logs useful without recording bearer URLs or file contents.
Before calling a share one-time or self-destructing, verify the complete flow under the actual configuration: concurrent redemption, retries, interrupted delivery, version cleanup, retention constraints, and the treatment of replicas, caches, and backups. State any retention or recovery window that prevents immediate removal.
