Deleting a Nintendo Switch user deletes that user’s local save data, and Nintendo says those saves cannot be restored. It does not delete the linked Nintendo Account or its digital purchases, but you must link that account to a user again to play its purchased software. Deleting or archiving a game is different: it removes software, not its save data.
What deleting a Switch user actually removes
A console user is the profile associated with that player’s saved progress. Nintendo warns that deleting a user deletes all save data associated with the account and that the data cannot be restored after deletion. Read Nintendo’s user deletion instructions before confirming the removal.

The linked Nintendo Account is separate from the console user. Removing the user does not itself delete that Nintendo Account or its purchases. However, the account’s digital software cannot be played on that console until the account is linked to a user again.
Games, saves, and accounts are different things
| Action | What happens to save data | What happens to software and account access |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a console user | That user’s associated saves are deleted and cannot be restored. | The Nintendo Account and purchases remain, but link the account to a user to play its digital software. Nintendo Support |
| Delete or archive downloaded software | Save data is unaffected. | The software is removed from the console; redownload it to play again. Nintendo Support |
| Delete a Nintendo Account | Associated account-linked data, including linked app save data, is lost. | This is separate from deleting a console user and can remove associated digital content. Nintendo Support |
| Transfer a user to another console | The user and associated data move to the destination; they are removed from the source when the transfer completes. | This is a move, not an extra copy. Nintendo Support |
| Transfer one save to a nearby console | The selected save moves and is deleted from the source. An existing destination save may be overwritten. | The user profile is not the same as the individual save transfer. Nintendo Support |
| Delete an individual save | You can remove a selected user’s save for a game, or saves for that software across users; deleted saves cannot be recovered. | The console user can remain in place. Nintendo Support |
How to protect saves before deleting a user
- Decide what you want to keep. Separate the game software, saved progress, screenshots or videos, and digital purchase access. The irreversible concern when removing a user is its associated save data.
- Check for a usable cloud backup. For a game that supports Save Data Cloud, verify that the correct user’s backup exists and is current before deleting the user. Restoring cloud saves requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says a cloud backup can be deleted separately without affecting the local save, but a backup deleted from the server cannot be downloaded again. See Nintendo’s save-data backup instructions.
- If cloud saves are unavailable, consider a console-to-console save transfer. Nintendo’s nearby-console method requires the same Nintendo Account to be linked to a user on both systems, internet access, and the consoles to be near each other. It moves the save off the source console. Check the destination first because an existing save there may be overwritten. Follow Nintendo’s transfer steps.
- Keep the Nintendo Account credentials. You can link the account to a user on another console and download its digital games. Cloud-backed saves are available only when the title supports the feature, a backup exists, and the Nintendo Switch Online membership remains active. See Nintendo’s digital game and account guidance.
- Delete the user only after deciding what to do with its saves. Nintendo’s warning is explicit: deleted user-associated save data cannot be restored.
Can a microSD card protect Switch save data?
No. Nintendo says Switch save data is stored in system memory and cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. A microSD card may hold software data, updates, or downloadable content, but those are not a backup of player progress. See Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ.

Want to remove progress but keep the user?
Delete the individual game save instead of deleting the whole user. On Switch 2 or Switch, open System Settings > Data Management > Delete Save Data, choose the game, then choose the relevant user or the option to delete saves for all users. Review the selected game and user carefully before confirming; Nintendo says deleted saves cannot be recovered. Menu labels can vary by system version, so consult Nintendo’s current save-data instructions.

If your goal is to disconnect a Nintendo Account from a console rather than erase the console user and its saves, check Nintendo’s separate instructions for unlinking a Nintendo Account. Deleting the Nintendo Account itself is a more consequential, separate action; Nintendo says it removes associated digital content and linked app data. Read Nintendo’s account deletion guidance before choosing that option.
