Definition of Windows Feature Update: What It Is and How It Differs from Quality Updates

A Windows feature update adds new functionality and capabilities, typically once a year, and may include fixes and security updates. Here is how it differs from quality updates.

A Windows feature update is a Windows release that adds new functionality or capabilities to the operating system. It can also carry fixes and security updates. Microsoft separates it from quality updates, which arrive more often and mainly deliver smaller fixes and security patches. That split is the core of the definition, but Windows 11 has made the boundary less clean than it once was.

The definition in Microsoft’s own terms

Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ describes feature updates as releases that are typically issued once per year. They “include new functionality and capabilities as well as potential fixes and security updates” (Microsoft Windows Update FAQ). The word “typically” matters. Microsoft does not promise a fixed annual date for every feature update, and the FAQ does not tie feature updates to a specific calendar month.

Feature update versus quality update

Quality updates are the monthly and out-of-band releases that most people see in Windows Update. Microsoft describes them as more frequent and as mainly containing small fixes and security updates. The same FAQ also says quality updates can sometimes include new features, so the difference is one of emphasis and cadence rather than a strict rule about content.

Why “new feature” does not always mean “feature update”

On Windows 11, Microsoft delivers new capabilities through several channels. Its feature delivery overview describes periodic improvements through servicing technology, including monthly updates, and separate updates through Microsoft Store apps (Windows 11 feature delivery overview). A reader who sees a new function appear in a monthly update has not necessarily received a feature update. Likewise, an app update from the Microsoft Store is not an operating system update at all.

When you explain or troubleshoot an update, keep these channels separate: the annual or enablement-based OS release, the monthly quality update, and app updates.

Enablement packages: a feature update that switches on dormant code

Some feature updates work differently from a full installation. Microsoft’s note for Windows 11 version 26H2 says it is delivered as an enablement package for eligible devices running version 24H2 or 25H2. In that case, the new features are already present but dormant in the latest monthly quality update, and the enablement package activates them (Windows 11 version 26H2 enablement-package note, September 2026).

This mechanism applies to that version path. It should not be assumed for every feature update, because other releases may install as a full upgrade. To find out which method applies to your device, read the release notes for the specific version you are looking at.

Free space and what to do when Windows reports too little

Feature updates generally need more free disk space than quality updates. Microsoft’s free-space guidance gives typical figures of 6 GB to 11 GB or more for feature updates and 2 GB to 3 GB or more for quality updates (Microsoft free-space guidance). The page does not show a publication date, and these are typical values. The actual requirement depends on the update path and optional content on the device.

If Windows reports insufficient space, work through these steps:

  1. Check the free space on the system drive and note how much the update reports it needs.
  2. Remove files you no longer need, such as downloads, temporary files, or large apps you do not use.
  3. If space is still short, connect an external USB storage device as an alternative location, as Microsoft’s guidance describes for this situation.
  4. Retry the update through Windows Update.

Installing a feature update manually

Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant can install the latest feature update manually on compatible x86 and x64 PCs. It does not run on ARM-based PCs (Windows Update Assistant guidance). If your device is ARM-based, you will receive feature updates only through the channels Windows offers on that hardware.

Which terms to use

When you write or explain this topic, use “feature update” for the annual or enablement-based Windows release, “quality update” for the monthly fixes and security patches, and “app update” for Microsoft Store software. Avoid saying that a feature update is the only way Windows gains features, and avoid presenting the once-a-year pattern as a guarantee.
