The desk upgrades that actually matter are the ones that fix a specific mismatch between you, your screen, your input devices and your work surface. Most of the eleven below are conditional. Check what you already have first, then buy only what closes a real gap.
Adjust what you already own before buying anything
Workstation guidance from both OSHA’s Computer Workstations eTool and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) starts from the same idea: you are arranging the workstation around a person. OSHA puts it plainly: “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.” CCOHS identifies three contact areas that shape posture, the seat, the work surface and the floor, and notes that two of these factors need to be adjustable for a comfortable posture.

Before you spend money, run through these checks with your current equipment:
- Elbows: while typing, CCOHS advises elbows at approximately 90 degrees, within a range of 90 to 110 degrees, per its keyboard guidance.
- Screen distance: OSHA’s purchasing guide recommends a monitor at least 20 inches from your eyes.
- Screen height: OSHA’s overview places the top of the monitor at or just below eye level, so you can look forward without tilting your head.
- Feet: if your feet cannot rest flat after the chair and desk are adjusted, that is the signal to consider a footrest.
- Wrists: the wrists should align with the forearms rather than bend up or down while typing.
If the chair, screen and keyboard can be brought into that arrangement with the equipment you have, you may not need to buy anything. Upgrades are for the leftover mismatches.

The eleven upgrades
1. An adjustable office chair that fits
A chair earns its place when your current one cannot hold a workable posture. OSHA’s purchasing checklist prioritizes seat height and tilt, back support, stability, casters suited to your floor, and armrests that do not block you from getting close to the desk. Its guidance is to try a chair for comfort and fit over an extended period rather than judging it in a showroom. CCOHS says there is no “average” person, so a chair that suits a colleague may not suit you. The CCOHS chair adjustment page covers how to set each control.
2. A monitor stand or adjustable monitor arm
Set the screen first, then decide whether you need hardware to achieve that position. The goal is a distance of at least 20 inches from your eyes and a top edge at or just below eye level. A stand or arm is one way to reach that, not a required purchase. If a laptop sits on a stack of books to reach the right height, a stand that raises the screen while keeping the keyboard reachable is the usual fix. A monitor you can already place correctly does not need one.
3. A separate keyboard and pointing device for laptop work
For a laptop used as your main computer, OSHA’s evaluation checklist recommends a separate keyboard and input device. Position them so your shoulders stay relaxed, your elbows stay close to your body and your wrists line up with your forearms. The guidance supports separate peripherals in general. It does not establish that any specific specialty design, such as a split or mechanical keyboard, is better for everyone.

4. A footrest, if your feet need one
A footrest is a conditional fit tool. OSHA recommends one when your feet cannot rest flat because keyboard and monitor adjustments are not enough to fix the problem. CCOHS also describes an adjustable chair with a footrest as a lower-cost option in some fixed-desk situations. Adjust the chair and desk first. A footrest added to a setup where your feet already rest comfortably adds nothing.
5. A height-adjustable desk or desk converter
Consider this if you want to vary between sitting and standing and you can place the keyboard, mouse and monitor correctly at both heights. CCOHS notes the cost and cautions that standing for too long can cause problems, so its advice is to alternate positions as needed rather than stand all day. Treat a sit-stand desk as a way to change posture, not as a guaranteed health or productivity improvement. The CCOHS sit-stand desk page explains the trade-offs in more detail.
6. A keyboard tray, if the desktop is too high
OSHA’s purchasing guide notes that a fixed-height desk may need a keyboard tray to provide adequate height adjustment. Check that the tray has room for both the keyboard and the mouse. A tray that is too small forces you to reach for the mouse, which defeats the purpose. The OSHA desks page covers the surface itself.

7. A task lamp with adjustable direction
OSHA’s evaluation checklist calls for adjustable lighting, with brighter task lighting for paperwork and lower light for general computer work. Its purchasing guide describes task lights with adjustable supports and directed light. This upgrade makes sense when you have a lighting mismatch, such as glare on the screen or a dim area where you read paper. The guidance does not establish that a lamp prevents eye disease or improves output, so do not buy one for those reasons.

8. A document holder for frequent paper reference
If you regularly type from printed pages, a stable adjustable holder can place the page close to the monitor at a similar height and distance. OSHA says a properly positioned holder may reduce risk factors such as awkward head and neck posture, fatigue, headaches and eye strain. That is a reason to use one only when you actually work from paper. A desk where you rarely reference documents does not need one.
9. A headset for calls during computer work
OSHA’s checklist notes that when you use the phone and computer at the same time, a headset may be needed so you can keep your head upright and your shoulders relaxed. Recommend it only to people whose work involves that combination. If you take occasional calls with a free hand, a headset is a convenience, not an ergonomic necessity.

10. A more usable work surface and clear legroom
Before replacing a desk, do the cheaper fixes. Clear stored items from under the desk so you can move your legs freely. Keep the keyboard, mouse and monitor within easy reach. Check that the surface is deep enough to hold the monitor at the recommended distance. OSHA recommends a matte finish to minimize glare and advises avoiding sharp leading edges. Replace the desk only if the surface itself prevents a workable arrangement.
11. A simple posture-change routine
This upgrade costs nothing. OSHA’s evaluation checklist advises varying your posture and avoiding long stretches of sitting or standing. CCOHS says recommendations on sit-stand timing vary, and the key is to alternate as needed. Use this as a habit of moving and taking breaks away from the screen, not a fixed timer that you follow regardless of how you feel.

What these guidelines do not establish
The official OSHA and CCOHS pages are general workstation guidance. They are not clinical trials comparing desk products, and they do not measure how much any upgrade changes injury rates, comfort or output. OSHA also states that its eTools do not create new OSHA requirements. Use the figures above, such as the 20-inch viewing distance and the keyboard heights of 22 to 30 inches when seated and 36 to 46.5 inches when standing from OSHA’s purchasing guide, as setup targets rather than medical thresholds. If you have pain, numbness or symptoms that persist, a clinician or occupational health professional can assess your situation, which no product page can do.
Cable management is a practical tidy-up step, but these guidelines do not present it as an ergonomic benefit, so treat it as an organization tip rather than a health upgrade.
