The short form U/UTP makes that explicit: the overall cable is unshielded and so is every individual pair. The twisting, not a metal layer, is what the design relies on to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI).
What “unshielded” actually means
In a UTP cable, each pair of insulated conductors is twisted around the other. Nothing metallic wraps the pairs, and nothing metallic wraps the bundle. Anatel, Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, describes U/UTP in its cable requirements as having no shield at the core or pair level, and it draws the contrast with F/UTP, which has a foil layer over the core while its pairs remain unshielded (Anatel, Ato nº 385, January 16, 2023).

Cisco’s networking course material describes UTP as a four-pair medium used in networks, with conductors usually 22- or 24-AWG copper (Cisco e-learning content; the search result did not show a publication date).

Why twisting matters, and what it does not do
Twisting and balanced transmission are the two design features UTP depends on to cope with interference. In balanced signalling, the two conductors of a pair carry equal and opposite signals, so external noise tends to couple onto both wires alike and largely cancels at the receiver. The IEEE guide on shielding practice puts it in these terms: “UTP depends on balanced signal transmission to cope with EMI” (IEEE Std 1143-2012). #1 Best Overall
- High-Performance Connectivity: This Cat 6 ethernet cable is designed for superior performance, with a 24 AWG copper wire core. It provides universal connectivity as an ethernet cord for LAN network components such as PCs, servers, printers, routers, and more, ensuring reliable and fast network connections
- Advanced Cat6 Technology: Experience Cat6 performance with higher bandwidth at a Cat5e price. This network cable is future-proof, ready for 10-Gigabit Ethernet and backwards compatible with any existing Cat 5 cable network. It meets or exceeds Category 6 performance according to the TIA/EIA 568-C.2 standard
- Reliable Wired Network Solution: Known variously as a Cat6 network cable, ethernet cable Cat 6, or Cat 6 data/LAN cable, this RJ45 cable offers a more secure and reliable connection than wireless networks. It's ideal for internet connections that demand consistency and security
- Durable and Secure Design: The connectors of this ethernet cable feature gold-plated contacts and strain-relief boots for enhanced durability. Bare copper conductors not only improve cable performance but also comply with communication cable specifications
- High-Speed Data Transfer: With up to 550 MHz bandwidth, this ethernet cord is ideal for server applications, cloud computing, video surveillance, and streaming high-definition video. It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.
Two misconceptions are common:
- Twisting is not a shield. It adds no metal layer and does not block interference. It reduces how much noise is picked up as a differential signal.
- UTP is not immune to interference. Long runs beside power cabling, motors, or fluorescent fixtures can still degrade a link, which is why installation practice matters as much as the cable’s construction.
Shielding labels: U/UTP, F/UTP, and U/FTP
The shorthand “UTP” is often used loosely. When construction matters, the prefix notation is more precise, and it identifies where any shield sits. The first letter (or pair of letters) refers to the overall cable, the second to the individual pairs.
| Designation | Overall (core) shield | Individual pair shields | Construction note |
|---|---|---|---|
| U/UTP | None | None | The plain UTP construction, with no shielding at any level (Anatel, Ato nº 385). |
| F/UTP | Foil over the core | None | Foil wraps the bundle; pairs are unshielded (Anatel, Ato nº 385). |
| U/FTP | None | Foil on each pair | Listed in Anatel’s comparison of cable types (Ato nº 385). |
Do not treat “STP” as a precise opposite of UTP. Shielded cables can carry a shield around the pairs, around the core, or both, and a label that only says “shielded” does not tell you which. Read the prefix, or the manufacturer’s construction sheet, for the actual arrangement.

- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Shielding is not the same as category
Shielding notation and cable category answer different questions. The prefix describes physical construction. The category (Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6A, and so on) identifies a set of electrical performance requirements. A cable can be U/UTP and Cat 6, or F/UTP and Cat 6A; the prefix alone tells you nothing about speed, bandwidth, or achievable link length.

The NEMA standard ANSI NEMA WC 66/ICEA S-116-732 (R2024), listed as active and published October 11, 2024, covers Category 6 and 6A, 100-ohm cables with individually unshielded twisted pairs, with or without an overall shield, for LAN communication wiring. It sets minimum electrical performance and specifies allowable conductor sizes, stranding, and shielding (NEMA standards listing). That is the reference to check when a product claims a category.

- Cat 6 performance at a Cat5e price but with higher bandwidth
- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
When you evaluate a cable, check these separately:
- Shielding construction: U/UTP, F/UTP, U/FTP, or another arrangement, as stated on the jacket or the datasheet.
- Category and standard: the category it claims and the standard it is tested against.
- Conductor and jacket details: conductor gauge, stranding, and jacket rating for the installation environment.
- Installed link: the performance of the complete channel, including connectors and patch cords, not the reel alone.
Where UTP is used
UTP cabling is used for voice and data wiring, including LAN communication wiring. In practice, a Cat 6 U/UTP Ethernet cable is the common example: four unshielded twisted pairs, no foil, sold for building network runs. Whether a given length, jacket, or category suits a specific room or building depends on the installation, which the cable’s label alone cannot settle.
In short: UTP is the family, U/UTP is the construction with no shielding at all, and the category is the performance grade. Keeping those three ideas apart prevents most confusion when reading cable specifications.
