A setup string is a sequence of characters or bytes used to configure a device, or to reproduce its settings. There is no single universal syntax. The device and its protocol decide what the string contains and how it is read.
What a setup string does
A setup string carries configuration information for one particular device or system. Documentation for tablets, modems, industrial controllers and thermostats all use the term. Each one means something different by it, so a string that works on one device should not be assumed to work on another.

How the term is used in manufacturer documentation
| Device context | What the setup string is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wacom tablets | A string sent to the tablet to configure it. It has a mandatory setup body and an optional setup tail. | Wacom, Programmers Reference Manual: Wacom Tablets |
| Triton 9610 cash dispenser | A Hayes-compatible string sent to the modem when it is initialized, for cases that need a nonstandard modem configuration. | Triton Systems, 9610 Single Cassette Dispenser Operation Manual |
| SCADAPack x70 (Geo SCADA 2020) | A network-specific string sent to a PPP modem while a connection is being established. | Schneider Electric, SCADAPack x70 Driver Guide: Port Function—PPP/TCPIP |
| Crestron CHV-THSTAT thermostat | The thermostat’s Viewport output: a string of characters describing its setup and configuration, with fields separated by periods. | Crestron CHV-THSTAT operation and installation manual (a ManualsLib-hosted copy) |
Tablets: a structured string with a body and tail
Wacom’s programming manual is the most formal definition of the four. The setup string is what you send to configure the tablet. It has a required body and an optional tail. The related setting string goes the other way and reports the tablet’s current state. That definition is specific to Wacom tablets, and whether it applies to your unit depends on the tablet model and firmware version.
Modems: initialization versus connection
The modem examples show that when a string is sent matters.
#1 Best Overall
- Initialization. Triton’s dispenser manual describes a Hayes-compatible string sent when the modem is initialized. It is meant only for special cases that need a nonstandard configuration.
- Connection setup. Schneider’s SCADAPack x70 guide describes a string sent to a PPP modem as a connection is being made, and it is specific to the network.
Thermostats: a descriptive output
In the Crestron manual page, the string is not something you send in. It is the thermostat’s Viewport output, which describes its setup and configuration as period-separated fields. So a setup string can be a record of settings as well as a command to apply them.
Why an incorrect string causes problems
Triton’s manual says: “Setting this value incorrectly will cause communication failure due to improper modem setup.” The manual attributes this to Triton Systems, Inc. and names no individual. It tells users to contact Triton Technical Service before changing the parameter.

Checklist before changing a setup string on real equipment
- Identify the exact device model and firmware version.
- Identify the protocol or connection method, such as a serial modem, PPP or a tablet interface.
- Establish when the string is sent: at initialization, or when the connection is made.
- Read the manufacturer’s documentation for that model, and contact its support if the manual says to.
- Do not copy a string from a different device or vendor.
The cited manuals do not give a common format, a shared standard or a benchmark for comparing setup strings across products. They only show that the meaning is set by each device’s documentation.
