An RCA phono jack is the female socket in the RCA (phono) connector family. It sits on a device or panel and accepts an RCA plug, the male end on a cable. The name describes the connector’s shape only. It does not tell you whether a given port is an input or output, or what signal it carries.
What each word in “RCA phono jack” means
- RCA is the name of the familiar connector family. RS’s connector guide also calls it a phono connector, a term associated with phonograph use.
- Phono is used in two ways. It can mean the physical connector, or it can refer to a turntable input function. A “phono input” on an amplifier is usually the latter, a port intended for a turntable, and it is a different thing from the RCA socket’s shape.
- Jack ordinarily means the female socket. The male cable end is the plug.
- Input and output describe signal direction. An input receives a signal and an output sends one. An RCA jack can be either.
How the jack is built
Bharat Skills’ electronic mechanic training text describes the plug as an inner conductor and a metal outer tube, separated by insulation. The cable’s inner conductor connects to the center contact and its shield connects to the outer contact, which is an unbalanced cable arrangement. The matching socket has the same two separated conductors: a center contact and an outer contact.

What an RCA jack can carry
RS states: “An RCA or phono connector can carry both audio and video signals.” The connector does not fix the signal type. Colour coding can help you recognise common consumer arrangements, but the device’s labelling and manual decide what a port is for. Do not infer a port’s purpose from its shape.

Mounting types when replacing a jack
The training text identifies two socket styles:
PCB-mount
Fitted directly to a printed circuit board. Match its footprint and termination to the board.

Panel-mount
Fixed to a chassis or panel. Match the mounting arrangement and how it is wired.
The sources establish these two variants and the plug/jack distinction. They do not give a universal dimension or compatibility standard for every product, so check the specific part against your equipment. Useful search phrases are “RCA female phono jack”, “panel-mount RCA socket” and “PCB-mount RCA jack”.

If you are connecting devices instead
You usually need a cable, not a jack. Check the connector gender at each end and how many separate connections your devices require, for example separate left and right audio channels or an added video connection. Then follow the labels on the ports to connect outputs to inputs.
