Definition of Hard Disk Defect Management

Hard disk defect management tracks defective or marginal media locations and may redirect them to spare media. It does not recover lost data or guarantee drive health.

Hard disk defect management is the drive’s internal process for identifying defective or marginal media locations, recording them, and avoiding or limiting their use. A drive may redirect an affected block to spare media, but this does not recover damaged data or guarantee that the drive is healthy.

What defect management does

Disk surfaces can have defects identified during manufacturing, and defects may also appear after a drive is in service. Defect management gives the drive a way to track affected locations and, where supported, substitute spare media for them. The aim is to keep those locations from being used normally; it is not a promise that every data error will be prevented.

The FOI report describes remapping a defective location to a spare sector as a way to handle defects without visibly reducing disk capacity. The exact behavior depends on the drive. Remapping concerns where the drive stores data; it does not restore user data that was already lost or corrupted.

How defects are recorded in documented SCSI examples

Some SCSI drive manuals describe defect lists that distinguish when or how a defect was found. These names and details are examples from particular SCSI documentation, not universal terms or rules for every ATA, SATA, SAS, or modern drive.

List What it records in the cited SCSI documentation Timing or handling
Primary (P) Defects identified during manufacture or initial factory formatting. Seagate’s Elite 47 manual says its P list is not altered after factory formatting. In that product’s SCSI interface, a host can request defect data with READ DEFECT DATA. Seagate Elite 47 Product Manual, Rev. A
Growth (G) Defects found after factory formatting; entries may reflect later reallocation. Depending on the documented product and operation, the list can include defects found during formatting, reallocated after REASSIGN BLOCKS, or automatically reallocated by the drive. Seagate SCSI Interface Product Manual
Certification (C) and data (D) Additional defect categories distinguished in Seagate’s SCSI interface manual: certification defects and defects supplied by the initiator. The source defines these categories in its SCSI command context; it does not establish them as general-purpose lists on all drives. Seagate SCSI Interface Product Manual

The Sun System Handbook also describes P and G lists and the SCSI READ DEFECT DATA command. Its account says the initiator cannot change or erase the P list, while G-list entries may include flaws found after formatting and results of successful REASSIGN BLOCKS commands. Sun System Handbook

Defect management is not the same as error recovery

Error recovery is what the drive attempts when an operational read or write error occurs. The recovery procedure can depend on configured recovery parameters. If recovery identifies a defect and the drive reallocates the affected location, that later defect may be recorded in a growth list in the cited SCSI examples. Recovery attempts, defect recording, and reallocation are related steps, but they are not interchangeable: a reallocation does not prove that the original data was recovered. Why “P-list” can be ambiguous

Do not assume that “P-list” always means Primary Defect List. Seagate’s openSeaChest glossary uses the term for Primary Defect List in a SCSI context, but also records Pending Defect List as another meaning. The surrounding drive documentation and interface determine which meaning applies. Seagate openSeaChest glossary

Drive-level handling versus filesystem bad-block handling

Defect management described in drive manuals operates inside the drive and its command interface. Filesystems or operating systems may also mark unusable blocks so they are avoided at the software layer. These are different layers: a filesystem’s record does not itself demonstrate that the drive has remapped physical media, and a drive’s internal remapping does not necessarily tell the filesystem what happened.

What the definition does not promise

  • It does not mean the drive can prevent every data error or recover every affected file.
  • It does not establish that every drive exposes defect lists or uses the SCSI list names described here.
  • It does not make a drive showing defects safe to keep using. Defect handling is a mechanism, not a guarantee of future reliability.
  • It does not imply ordinary user software can inspect hidden or remapped sectors; the cited forensic discussion raises data-access questions but does not establish such access for typical software.
