Switching from Plex to Jellyfin can mean more than pointing a new app at the same media folder. Plan to handle watch history and metadata separately, test playback on the devices and files you actually use, configure remote access yourself, and check whether your library needs transcoding. Those are the practical lessons to settle before retiring Plex—not a claim of personal experience.
1. Treat watch history and metadata as migration work
Your video and music files are only part of a media-server setup. Watch status, users, and library details may matter just as much, and Jellyfin’s migration guidance does not describe a simple, officially supported one-click import of Plex’s complete internal database. Jellyfin says its internal databases cannot be copied or adjusted easily, though third-party API scripts can transfer watched status and users from Plex, Emby, or another Jellyfin server. See the Jellyfin migration guide for its current guidance.

Before you shut down Plex
- List the data you would miss if it did not carry over: watched status, user accounts, and any library details important to your household.
- Keep a backup of the old server and its configuration before experimenting with migration scripts.
- Check what a script supports and verify the result in Jellyfin while Plex is still available. Treat tools as targeted migration aids, not a guarantee that every Plex setting or database record will transfer.
- Keep media paths accessible to the new server. Jellyfin’s migration guide also covers paths, which may need attention when the old and new server environments differ.
2. Test the clients and files your household actually uses
Jellyfin playback is determined by the combination of file and client. Direct Play sends a compatible file without transcoding. Remuxing changes its container while leaving the audio and video streams untouched. Direct Stream transcodes audio while preserving video, while a full Transcode converts video. An unsupported codec can require video transcoding; subtitles can prompt remuxing or be burned into the picture, which also requires processing. Jellyfin explains these playback paths in its transcoding documentation and discusses device support in its client list.
Make a household playback checklist
- Try the television or streaming device used for living-room viewing, not just a desktop browser.
- Test phones and browsers used by household members or remote viewers.
- Include representative files from your library: different video and audio codecs, containers, and subtitle formats.
- During playback, check whether a file is Direct Playing, being remuxed, Direct Streaming, or fully transcoded. A file that plays successfully may still be asking the server to do substantial conversion work.
Do not assume every platform has an equivalent client or identical feature support. Jellyfin’s official client list has inclusion and maintenance criteria, so check the current listing for each device that matters to you.

Access, back up, organize, and share data across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, web browsers, and compatible smart TVs—ideal for creators and advanced home users working across multiple devices.
3. Treat remote access as a network configuration task
Jellyfin describes itself as fully self-hosted and says it does not need an internet connection to run. That supports local use; it does not automatically make a server reachable from outside the home. Remote streaming requires a route to the server over the internet and configuration by its administrator. Jellyfin’s networking guide discusses access controls and reverse proxies and says directly exposing a port to the internet is not recommended. Your network, router, and chosen setup affect what will work.
That distinction matters if Plex’s policy is part of your reason for considering a switch. In an announcement dated March 11, 2026, Plex said that beginning March 23, 2026, remote streaming of personal media on supported smart TVs and gaming consoles would require Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass; the announcement says local streaming remains free. The stated change is limited to those supported TV and console clients, not a blanket description of every Plex device or use case. Read the Plex Team announcement for its scope.

4. Check transcoding needs before changing server hardware
A Jellyfin server does not necessarily need to transcode every file. When a client can play a file directly, the server may avoid video conversion; unsupported formats, subtitle handling, or remote playback conditions can change that. First test the media and clients from the earlier checklist, then decide whether your existing hardware is adequate for the jobs it actually has to do.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsJellyfin supports hardware-accelerated transcoding on modern GPUs from Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip when the required hardware is available. HDR video transcoded to SDR requires tone-mapping, and Jellyfin warns that software tone-mapping can be very slow; the project recommends a GPU for that use case. Consult the transcoding documentation before buying or replacing hardware. These requirements do not establish that every Jellyfin installation needs a GPU or a new server.

Decide whether the switch fits your setup
Jellyfin’s project describes its server and official clients as free to download, and its homepage identifies it as free software licensed under the GNU GPL. That removes a software purchase from the basic comparison, but it does not remove the work of migration, device testing, or network administration. See the Jellyfin project site for its description.

- Are you prepared to configure and maintain internet access if people need to stream outside your home?
- Does testing show that your current server can handle any required transcoding, including HDR-to-SDR conversion?
If the answers are favorable, migrate while Plex remains available, validate the results, and only then decide whether to retire it. Jellyfin 12.0 also has release and plugin compatibility implications; check the project’s Jellyfin 12.0 announcement if plugins are part of your setup.
