Google word processing means creating, editing, formatting, and sharing text documents with Google Docs, Google’s online word processor. Google Docs runs in a web browser, so you do not need to install desktop word processing software to use it. The product name is Google Docs; word processing is the broader activity it supports.

What Google Docs is

Google describes Google Docs in its Editors Help as: “Google Docs is an online word processor that lets you create and format documents and work with other people.” In other words, the service covers the core jobs people associate with a word processor, such as writing letters, reports, essays, and notes, plus the ability to pass those files to other people.

Word processing and Google Docs are not the same thing

Word processing is the activity of composing and editing text documents, applying formatting, and producing a finished file. Google Docs is one product that does this work. Other products, including desktop applications and other online editors, also perform word processing. When this article says “Google word processing,” it means doing that work specifically in Google Docs.

What you can do in Google Docs

Google’s help material describes the following core tasks:

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
  • Create a document from the Docs home screen.
  • Edit text and organize paragraphs.
  • Format content, including spacing, fonts, and headings.
  • Insert structure such as tables and a table of contents.
  • Share a file and choose whether each person can view, comment on, or edit it.

How you access it

Google identifies three ways to use Docs: in a web browser, through the Android app, and through the iOS app. Because the browser version needs no special software, it is the simplest starting point for most people. Google’s product material also describes offline access. Offline availability of particular functions can differ by device, account, or settings, so do not assume every feature works without a connection.

Collaboration and saving

According to Google’s Workspace Learning Center, multiple people can work in the same document at the same time, see each other’s changes as they happen, and have changes saved automatically. Those are capabilities Google states for the product; they are not guarantees about every network condition or every account type. Sharing controls, comments, and revision history are also part of the collaboration model Google describes.

The Workspace Learning Center puts the browser point this way: “With Google Docs, you can create and edit text documents right in your web browser—no special software is required.”

Personal use and Google Workspace

Google Docs is included in Google Workspace, the company’s business suite. Google’s product material also presents it for personal use and collaboration. You do not need a paid business plan to understand what Google Docs is or to use it for everyday personal documents.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Format compatibility is not guaranteed for every file type. Google supports editing Microsoft Word files, but that is a supporting detail rather than a promise that every document will look identical after conversion.
  • Feature availability varies. Specific functions can depend on device, account, or settings.
  • Sharing decides access. Whoever you share with gets only the permission level you assign.
