In Morse code, a dot is a short signal and a dash is a long one. Letters, numbers and punctuation are built from sequences of these two marks, and the pauses between them tell a receiver where each element, character and word begins and ends.

What a dot and a dash mean

A dot and a dash are the two basic elements of Morse code. Written down, they are conventionally shown as . and -. In sound or light, the difference is duration: a dot is brief and a dash is sustained. The Communications Museum of Macao describes the system this way: “Morse Code is an early form of digital communication and all the Characters are encoded as Dots or Dashes.” Communications Museum of Macao, “Morse Telegraph”

How long each mark lasts

In International Morse timing, the dot is the basic unit and the dash is longer. The figures below apply to International Morse timing as described in the Microchip technical guide, not to every historical telegraph system.

Element Timing in International Morse Source
Dot 1 dot unit (short signal) Microchip Technology, “2.1 SOS Sequence Morse Code Basics”
Dash 3 dot units (long signal) Microchip Technology, as above
Word gap 7 dot units Microchip Technology, as above
Gap between characters and sentence gap Identified as distinct timing elements, but numeric values not stated in the consulted source Communications Museum of Macao, “Morse Telegraph” (last modified 2025-10-03)

Why the pauses matter as much as the marks

A string of dots and dashes is not readable on its own. Short pauses separate the elements inside one character, while longer pauses separate characters and words. Without those gaps, a run of signals would blur together. The word gap is the largest of these: seven dot units in the Microchip timing model.

Characters are patterns of marks

Every letter, numeral and punctuation sign has its own sequence. The Communications Museum of Macao’s table illustrates the principle with three simple examples:

  • E is one dot.
  • T is one dash.
  • S is three dots.

The same table covers the full alphabet and the numerals. A printed chart is a convenient lookup aid for a beginner, but understanding the definition does not require any equipment.

Reading by sight and by sound

Morse code began as a telegraph code. The National Council of Science Museums, India, says Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail developed it in the 1830s. Early receivers rendered the marks on paper tape, and operators soon found they could understand the receiver’s clicks by listening. National Council of Science Museums, “Morse Key – Activities”

That shift explains why the definition is framed in terms of duration rather than appearance. Paper shows the dot and dash as symbols, but in real reception the difference is heard as a short click versus a longer one.

The standards reference

The International Telecommunication Union publishes Recommendation M.1677-1, titled “International Morse code.” Its page records approval on 2009-10-03 and lists the recommendation as in force. ITU, “M.1677 : International Morse code” This recommendation defines the International form. It does not establish that every historical Morse system used identical patterns or timing.

Checking a character by hand

  1. Write or listen for the signal and mark each element as a dot (short) or dash (long).
  2. Group the elements by the pauses between them, using the longer gaps to find character boundaries.
  3. Look up the pattern in a character table. For example, one dot is E, one dash is T, and three dots is S.
