An installable file system (IFS) is a way for an operating system to add filesystem support through a driver or related interface. It is not a particular file format such as NTFS or Ext2: it describes how filesystem support can be added. The term is especially associated with historical OS/2 terminology; current Windows documentation generally uses file-system driver and file-system filter driver.
What does IFS mean?
A filesystem defines how files and directories are organized, named, and accessed. In Windows, filesystem behavior is supplied by drivers and related components. Microsoft lists NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32 among the main filesystems available in its Windows documentation. An IFS is the extension mechanism or driver category that lets an operating system handle filesystem support beyond what it provides by default—not a format in itself. Microsoft’s file-system driver reference describes how Windows implements filesystems.

Historically, the phrase was used in OS/2 for an API that extended access beyond FAT and HPFS. That usage included both additional disk formats and files on network servers. It is a description of OS/2 terminology, not a universal interface shared by every modern operating system. The OS/2 glossary entry provides that historical context.

A filesystem driver supplies the behavior needed to work with a filesystem. A filesystem filter driver instead attaches to the filesystem stack to monitor, filter, or modify file I/O handled by one or more filesystems or volumes. A filter does not, simply by being a filter, define the filesystem’s on-disk format. Microsoft describes minifilters as the preferred model for new filter-driver development. Read Microsoft’s overview of file-system filter drivers.

| Term | Purpose | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|
| Filesystem driver | Implements filesystem behavior so the operating system can work with that filesystem. | Filesystem support within the operating system’s driver stack. |
| Filesystem filter driver | Observes, filters, or modifies I/O in the filesystem stack. | One or more filesystems or volumes; it works with the filesystem rather than defining its on-disk format. |
| Historical OS/2 IFS API | Extends OS/2 access to additional disk formats and network files. | OS/2, in its historical usage; not a cross-platform standard. |
What does “installable” imply in practice?
Installing a filesystem driver is platform- and driver-specific. For Windows, Microsoft explains that an INF file gives SetupAPI installation instructions, including which files to copy and configuration such as the driver’s start type and load-order group. The documentation also says kernel-mode components on 64-bit Windows Vista and later must be signed to load and execute. Consult the current guidance for the exact Windows release and driver type rather than treating these details as universal rules. Microsoft’s installation guidance for file-system filter drivers explains the Windows mechanism.
- Compatibility: Support depends on the operating system, driver version, and filesystem features.
- Installation: A driver’s package and setup method must match its platform and role.
- Security: A driver may run in kernel mode, so signing and other platform requirements matter.
Is an IFS package the same as a current filesystem driver?
No. A product or project may use “IFS” in its name, but that does not establish compatibility with current operating systems or every version of a format. For example, the Ext2 IFS for Windows project’s download page lists version 1.12, released 2015-12-31, and support through Windows 8.1 / Server 2012 R2. The page also says it cannot access Ext4 volumes. Those details describe that legacy project, not IFS software generally. See the Ext2 IFS download page for its stated version and limitations.
