Should You Buy the Cheaper iPhone 16 or Spend More on the iPhone 17?

For U.S. buyers, the iPhone 16 makes sense if it is meaningfully cheaper at the same storage capacity and 128GB is enough for you. The iPhone 17 is the stronger value when its higher price buys you the storage you need as well as a smoother display, improved ultra-wide and selfie cameras, and a higher Apple-rated video-playback figure.

As of October 4, 2026, Tom’s Guide reports the iPhone 16 starting at $799 with 128GB, while Apple’s U.S. store lists the iPhone 17 from $899 with 256GB. That $100 starting-price gap is not an equal-storage comparison: the newer phone starts with twice the capacity. Check the prices for matching storage and the exact seller terms before deciding.

Compare the real price, not just the starting prices

The current U.S. price snapshot puts the iPhone 16 at $799 for 128GB, according to Tom’s Guide’s 2026 report. Apple’s U.S. store lists the iPhone 17 from $899 with 256GB. The nominal $100 difference buys a newer model and doubles the base storage, so it does not tell you what the phones cost at the same capacity.

Before buying, compare the live listings for the storage you actually want. Also check whether each phone is unlocked or carrier-locked, its condition, warranty, return policy, and any trade-in or promotion requirements. Those terms can change the effective price substantially; prices and stock can change as well. The $699 iPhone 16 and $799 iPhone 17 figures in older comparisons predate the reported September 2026 price increase and should not be treated as current.

What the iPhone 17 adds

A smoother, larger display

Apple lists the iPhone 16 with a 6.1-inch OLED display and the iPhone 17 with a 6.3-inch OLED display. The 17 adds ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, an Always-On display, and outdoor peak brightness up to 3,000 nits; Apple lists the 16 at up to 2,000 nits outdoors and does not list ProMotion for it. In practical terms, scrolling and supported animations can look more fluid on the 17, while the 16 is the smaller choice. Apple’s diagonal display measurements are not the same as measuring a simple rectangle, so the figures do not by themselves describe the phones’ overall size.

More capable ultra-wide, macro, and front cameras

Both phones have a 48MP main camera and 2x optical-quality telephoto framing. The iPhone 16 pairs its main camera with a 12MP ultra-wide; the iPhone 17 upgrades the ultra-wide to 48MP and adds 48MP macro photography. On the front, the 17 has an 18MP Center Stage camera, compared with the 16’s 12MP TrueDepth camera. The specification differences make the 17’s clearest camera case ultra-wide detail, close-ups, and front-camera flexibility. They do not establish that every ordinary main-camera photo will look better.

More base storage and a newer processor

Apple lists A18 in the iPhone 16 and A19 in the iPhone 17. The available specifications do not establish a measured speed or battery-efficiency advantage, so do not choose between them on an assumed benchmark difference. Instead, check how much space your photos, video, apps, and downloaded media use, then compare the actual prices for the storage configurations available to you.

A higher published video-playback rating

Apple rates the iPhone 17 for up to 30 hours of video playback and the iPhone 16 for up to 22 hours. These are manufacturer ratings under defined test conditions, not a guarantee of how long either phone will last in your daily mix of calls, apps, camera use, and screen time.

What they have in common

Both models support Apple Intelligence, include the Action button and Camera Control, and carry IP68 water- and dust-resistance claims. The iPhone 17 is one generation newer, but Apple does not promise a fixed number of years of iOS updates in the cited specifications. There is no substantiated update end date to use as a deciding figure.

Choose based on the trade-off that matters to you

Choose When it fits What you give up or should check
iPhone 16 You want a lower purchase price, prefer a smaller 6.1-inch screen, and can stay within 128GB. Confirm the discount remains meaningful once storage is matched. It lacks the 17’s adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, 48MP ultra-wide and macro features, and 18MP Center Stage front camera.
iPhone 17 You want 256GB as standard, value smoother scrolling or the newer camera capabilities, or place weight on Apple’s higher video-playback rating. Check the live price and terms for the exact configuration. The $899 starting price is for 256GB, so it is not directly comparable with a 128GB iPhone 16.

If neither phone’s base capacity suits your needs, compare higher-capacity versions rather than paying for a phone that may run short on space. For a close price, the iPhone 17’s extra storage and hardware changes make the premium easier to justify; if the 16 is substantially cheaper and 128GB is sufficient, it remains a rational savings choice.
