For a volume-licensed deployment, the “default keys” are Microsoft Generic Volume License Keys (GVLKs), also called KMS client setup keys. Choose the key for the exact installed edition: a GVLK is a volume-activation client key, not a retail license, and it does not activate Windows on its own.
Find the GVLK for the installed edition
Use Microsoft’s official KMS client activation keys and product keys table as the source for the actual key strings. It lists separate GVLKs for Windows Server 2019 Standard, Datacenter, and Essentials, as well as Windows 10 editions and variants, including Pro, Pro N, Pro for Workstations, Education, and Enterprise. Match the entry to the edition that is installed; the Windows version alone is not enough.
Copy the key directly from the table. Do not substitute a retail key or a KMS host key: the GVLK is intended for volume-licensing activation, and it is not a retail product license.
When a GVLK needs to be installed
Volume-licensing editions generally already include their GVLK, so a manual key change is usually unnecessary. It may be needed when converting an installation from MAK or retail activation to KMS or Active Directory-based activation, or when preparing custom installation media or an image that needs a GVLK.

Microsoft documents this elevated Command Prompt form for installing a client key:
slmgr /ipk <product key>
Replace <product key> with the GVLK for the exact installed edition. Microsoft also documents using the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) to install client keys. See Activate clients running Windows and Install a KMS client key.

What must be in place for activation
Installing a GVLK configures the machine as a volume-activation client; it does not provide activation by itself. Microsoft explains that a GVLK activates against a KMS host or an Active Directory-based activation object, not against Microsoft activation servers. The organization must have the appropriate licensing and activation infrastructure.
- KMS: The client needs access to an organization’s KMS host. The host uses a separate Customer Specific Volume License Key (CSVLK), not the client GVLK. Default KMS connectivity uses TCP port 1688. See Microsoft’s KMS activation planning for Windows Server.
- Active Directory-based activation: A domain-joined client can request an activation object available through the organization’s Active Directory environment.
- MAK: A MAK-configured client follows a different route and attempts activation with Microsoft’s servers. A GVLK is not a replacement for a MAK.
Microsoft’s volume activation planning describes these activation methods and their requirements. Which path applies depends on the organization’s volume-licensing entitlement and deployment setup.

Deployment check before changing keys
- Confirm the installed Windows edition on each device or image.
- Look up the matching GVLK in Microsoft’s official key table; do not select by version name alone.
- Check whether the volume-licensed installation already has its GVLK before replacing a key.
- Confirm that the organization has a working KMS host or Active Directory-based activation object, or use its MAK activation process as appropriate.
- If a key must be changed, use an elevated prompt with
slmgr /ipk <product key>or deploy it with VAMT.
