Deepinder Goyal Clarifies Temple Device’s Age Limit: Do Under-18 Brains Need A Wearable?

Temple's terms require users to be 18 or older, and Deepinder Goyal says he sees little reason for under-18s to use it. Here is what the policy and the evidence actually establish.

Temple is not designed for people under 18. Its terms of use require users to be at least 18, and its privacy policy says the device is intended for adults. Temple founder Deepinder Goyal has also said he sees little reason for anyone under 18 to use it, unless they are training for the Olympics. Neither statement is evidence that the device is safe or useful for children, and no independent study of Temple in people under 18 was identified as of October 9, 2026.

What Deepinder Goyal said

Goyal responded to questions about the device in a post dated October 4, 2026, which NDTV reported on October 9, 2026. In the post he wrote: “We use a PPG sensor. Same as Apple Watch and other wearables. Nothing in there which can hurt a developing brain. Having said that, I don’t see why anybody less than 18 years would need a Temple, unless they are aiming to go to the Olympics.”

Read closely, the remark makes two separate points. The first is a comparison: Temple’s sensor is the same type of optical PPG sensor used in mainstream smartwatches, and Goyal says it cannot harm a developing brain. The second is a judgment about need: he does not see a reason for younger users to wear it outside elite athletic training. The first is a claim about the sensor. It is not a pediatric safety study, and it does not address whether the readings are accurate for children.

What Temple’s own terms and policies say

Goyal’s remarks are informal. Temple’s published documents are the binding statements about who may use the product.

  • Age requirement. Temple’s Terms of Use, dated August 26, 2025, require users to represent that they are at least 18. The terms state that the company can end access if that eligibility requirement is not met.
  • Intended use. Temple’s Privacy Policy, dated August 26, 2025, says the services are not directed at children and that the device is intended for adults.
  • Medical status. The terms state: “The Temple Device and Services are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition or illness.” They describe the data as general-wellness information, not medical advice, and not a substitute for professional medical judgment.

These are company eligibility and intended-use rules. They are not a statement of a universal legal age limit for wearable devices in every country, so readers should treat the 18-year threshold as Temple’s own policy.

What the sensor claims do and do not establish

Temple’s product site describes its headline metric, BrainFlow, as a proxy for cerebral blood flow measured in real time from the temple. The company’s science and research page summarizes comparisons with two reference methods. Those summaries are the strongest evidence Temple offers, but they come from the company itself and were carried out in adult participants.

Temple’s sensor is described as PPG, a light-based method. Temple’s materials do not describe it as measuring electrical brain activity, so it should not be compared with an EEG headband. Comparing the two would imply a measurement that Temple does not claim.

So does an under-18 user need one?

The available evidence does not establish that a person under 18 needs Temple, and it does not establish that Temple is safe or useful for that age group. Goyal’s view is that the sensor poses no known developing-brain risk and that a younger user has little reason to wear it. Temple’s written terms exclude under-18 users altogether. Neither position is backed by a pediatric study.

For a parent or teenager weighing the question, the practical steps are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the age term in the Terms of Use before registering, because the company says it may end access for users who do not meet it.
  2. Treat any BrainFlow reading as general wellness information, not a diagnosis or a reason to change medication, training, or sleep patterns.
  3. If the goal is to monitor a health concern in a child, ask a pediatrician or other licensed clinician which measurement is appropriate, rather than relying on a consumer wearable.
  4. If Temple’s early-access registration on its official site is the only route to the device, note that the site invites users to register and does not publish any pediatric guidance.

Adults who want to test a wellness wearable should weigh the same limits: the company’s data is not validated for medical decisions, and its accuracy claims rest on its own summaries.
