Deepfake detectors can flag patterns associated with synthetic or manipulated media, but no score alone proves that a clip is fake—or authentic. A useful comparison starts with the question each tool answers, the media and test conditions it was evaluated on, and how it handles ordinary changes such as compression.
What a deepfake detector actually reports
“Deepfake detection” can refer to several different technical tasks. NIST distinguishes image-authenticity detection, identity verification (including whether a face was swapped), manipulation localization, source verification, and provenance reconstruction. A result for one task does not automatically answer the others.

- Detection: Does the media show patterns associated with synthetic generation or manipulation?
- Identity or face-swap checks: Does a face appear to have been replaced or altered? This is narrower than deciding whether an entire video is authentic.
- Localization: Can the system identify which pixels or regions may have been changed?
- Source verification and provenance: Can the file’s origin or history be established from relevant records or evidence?
Some tools return a confidence score; others may also provide a map of suspected regions. Neither output should be read as a complete account of who made the file, how it was edited, or whether its content is true.
Why benchmark results may not hold for your file
A benchmark measures performance on specified samples and conditions, not every image or video a person might encounter. Results can change when a detector faces generation methods unlike those in its evaluation data, or when an otherwise useful clip has been resized, blurred, compressed, or re-encoded by a social platform.

NIST’s Guardians of Forensic Evidence guidance calls for test data representative of the intended use, content, and generators—including “dirty,” post-processed media such as low-bitrate footage and files with social-media compression artifacts. It also emphasizes continued validation as techniques and software change. A clean benchmark result is therefore most informative when the test resembles the real use case.
NIST’s GenAI: Deepfakes 2026 project page summarizes a 45–50% performance degradation when moving from academic evaluation to operational deployment. That figure describes the evaluation-to-deployment gap as presented on that page; it is not a universal accuracy rate and does not predict the performance of every detector or file.

How to compare deepfake detection tools fairly
There is no supported universal winner in the available evidence. Compare systems only when they address the same task under reasonably comparable conditions. Ask for the following details before treating a headline score as meaningful.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Modality and input | Does it accept still images, video, audio, or combined audio/video? What file types and quality constraints apply? |
| Task definition | Is it detecting synthetic media, checking a face swap, locating edits, verifying a source, or reconstructing provenance? Keep unlike tasks separate. |
| Test data and generators | Which authentic and manipulated samples were tested? Do the generation methods resemble the media in question, and was the test set independent of training data? |
| Handling and robustness | How does performance change after resizing, blur, compression, platform re-encoding, or other ordinary post-processing? |
| Error measures | Are ROC/AUC and false-alarm behavior reported, rather than only a headline accuracy? What false-positive rate accompanies the stated detection rate? |
| Output and reviewability | Does the system provide a score, localization map, or other inspectable evidence? Is the output’s interpretation and escalation process explained? |
| Validation and version | When was it evaluated, which model or software version was tested, and is it reassessed after updates or new generation methods emerge? |
NIST’s Open Media Forensics Challenge (OpenMFC) illustrates why task boundaries matter: its image-manipulation task can provide a confidence score and, for local edits, a pixel mask; its video-manipulation task provides a confidence score but does not address spatial localization in that task. OpenMFC reports AUC as a primary detection metric and also reports correct detection rate at a 5% false-alarm rate. These are evaluation choices for defined tasks, not guarantees about a commercial tool or an individual file.

Can a detector prove a clip is fake?
No. A detector can provide evidence that a file contains patterns associated with manipulations or synthetic media represented in the system’s task and evaluation data. Depending on its design, it may also identify suspected regions or return a confidence score. That evidence can inform further review, but it does not by itself establish the original creator, the full edit history, chain of custody, a speaker’s identity, the truth of a statement or event, or legal admissibility.
Likewise, a low score does not prove authenticity. Translate neither “high score” into “proven fake” nor “low score” into “proven real.” The conclusion has to match the question and the supporting evidence.

How to check whether a video is a deepfake
- Define the question. Decide whether you need to check for synthetic generation, a face swap, a localized edit, the source, or the file’s history. These are different tasks.
- Preserve the file you received. Keep the original file and note where it came from. If the only copy is a platform download or screen recording, recognize that it may already have been re-encoded or altered.
- Check the tool’s fit. Confirm that it accepts the media type and quality you have, and that its evaluation covered similar content, manipulation methods, and post-processing.
- Read the output in context. Treat a score or highlighted region as an indicator for review, not a verdict. Look for the documented false-alarm behavior and the precise task behind the output.
- Escalate consequential cases. For a legal, financial, safety, or reputational decision, use independent evidence and a qualified forensic process rather than relying on one automated score.
Detection is not provenance, labeling, or watermarking
NIST’s 2024 report treats synthetic-content detection, content authentication and provenance tracking, labels such as watermarking, and software testing as separate approaches to transparency. A detector analyzes content for signals associated with manipulation or generation. A provenance record or content credential may describe a file’s history when one is available and valid; a label or watermark is another kind of signal. None is a universal substitute for the others.

Not finding credentials does not prove that a file is fake. Conversely, a detector result is not a provenance history. Each method answers a different question, and claims should be limited to what the evidence supports.

Why two tools may give different results
Different outputs are possible when systems use different tasks, test data, thresholds, input requirements, or handling assumptions. One may assess whole-image authenticity while another checks for a face swap or attempts to localize edits. Their scores are not directly comparable unless the underlying task and evaluation conditions are alike.
If results conflict, check what each tool actually evaluated, whether the file was transformed before analysis, and what false-alarm behavior is documented. A disagreement is a reason to examine the methods and seek independent evidence—not to pick whichever score sounds more certain.
What a responsible comparison can establish
A meaningful comparison can show how systems performed on specified tasks, datasets, and conditions, and whether they provide outputs that can be reviewed. It cannot establish how every product will perform on every new clip. NIST’s forensic guidance points toward clearly defined questions, representative data, ROC/AUC evaluation, post-processing stress tests, and continuous reassessment. Without that kind of like-for-like validation, a product ranking based on isolated scores would be misleading.
