Deep Regrets turns a week of fishing into a steadily stranger risk-management game: spend days at port preparing and scoring, or head out to catch fish that can bring both opportunity and regret. TechRaptor’s review praises its thematic production, clear rules and tactical variety, while noting that competition can become harder to read at four or five players. What is Deep Regrets?
Deep Regrets is a physical board game from Tettix Games, framed as strategic horror fishing in a fictional turn-of-the-century Europe where folklore and Hollow Earth ideas might be true. The publisher lists it for one to five players aged 16 and up, at about 30 minutes per player. Its stated inspirations range from The Shadow Over Innsmouth and John Langan’s The Fisherman to Hellboy, Dredge, Bloodborne and, unexpectedly, Scooby Doo. Tettix Games’ game page says the Kickstarter campaign earned over £600,000 in 2024; that is the publisher’s figure, not an independently audited total.

The premise is more than atmospheric dressing. Players choose how far to push their fishing, and the game ties access to stranger catches to systems that can affect both their capabilities and their final score.

As described in TechRaptor’s review, the game unfolds over a week. On each day, players choose between spending time fishing or going to port. That decision is the central opportunity cost: port can improve a future outing or convert catches into points, but it gives up a fishing day.

Choose between the water and the port
- Fish: Select among piles organized by shadow size and depth, then roll dice and use their values to meet a fish’s catch value.
- Go to port: Acquire rods, reels or other equipment; sell fish; or mount catches to increase your score.
Fishing deeper is not a free shortcut to better catches. It consumes dice, and moving back toward shallower water also costs resources. A deep-water plan therefore commits future turns: a player needs to weigh the promise of more unusual fish against the time and dice required to get there and return.
Regret and Madness make the risk matter
Encountering and selling stranger catches brings Regret cards. The review describes these as flavor-text cards with values that affect scoring, so the game’s eerie narrative also has a mechanical cost. Meanwhile, the Ocean Madness tracker changes fish values and the maximum dice capacity as madness rises.

Together, these systems create a push-your-luck decision with consequences: take on regret to reach stronger, fouler catches, then manage what that choice does to your score and resources. That gives the fishing trip a strategic tension beyond simply pursuing the largest catch.

What the review likes about Deep Regrets
TechRaptor’s review, by Adam Potts, highlights how the physical components and artwork reinforce the theme. It calls attention to details such as the fish coin and life preserver, as well as the fish illustrations. The flavor text on Regret cards also helps suggest a connected narrative without making the game’s appeal depend only on its horror setting.

The review also praises the rulebook’s flow and ease of reference, and finds more tactical variety than the fishing premise initially suggests. Choices about when to visit port, how far to fish, and how to handle regret and madness give players different ways to approach a game. Potts notes that he repeatedly gravitated toward the deeper, riskier strategy even when intending to try a more restrained one; that is his experience, not a universal result.
How player count affects the experience
The review reports solo or cooperative survey play, where players catalog fish, as well as competitive play. Its account of the competitive game changes with the number of players: two or three felt relatively civil to the reviewer, while four or five could make areas easier to overfish and the leader harder to identify. Treat that as one reviewer’s observation rather than a guarantee of how every group will experience the game.

This is the clearest caveat in the review. Players who want a transparent race for the lead may find crowded waters less satisfying, while groups comfortable with a more contested board may welcome the extra pressure. The review does not establish a universal best player count.

- Also worth considering: Groups that enjoy weighing short-term catches against preparation, scoring and longer-term consequences; the publisher’s estimate is about 30 minutes per player.
- Check your preference: If you expect a calm, easily tracked competitive race, consider the reviewer’s report that four- and five-player games can become more crowded and harder to read.
Deep Regrets looks most distinctive where its mechanics and theme meet: going deeper offers strange rewards, but the game makes that ambition carry resource and scoring consequences. The review’s praise for the components, rules and tactical choices is balanced by a concrete player-count concern, rather than a claim that every table will have the same experience.
