A dedicated video card is a discrete graphics solution: a graphics processor separate from the computer’s main processor, with its own graphics memory. In a desktop PC, it usually means a separate add-in board. The term can also describe graphics hardware in a laptop, where it may not be a removable card.
What “dedicated video card” means
In everyday computer specifications, “dedicated” and “discrete” graphics usually mean a GPU that is separate from the CPU and has dedicated graphics memory. Intel describes the alternative, integrated graphics, as a GPU built into the processor that shares system memory with the CPU (Intel Support).

A GPU is the graphics processor itself. A graphics card is a board that carries a GPU and supporting components. On a desktop, that board commonly connects to a PCI Express slot; the GPU and the card are related, but they are not the same thing (Intel).

| Graphics type | Where the GPU is | Memory | General trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated | Built into the processor | Shares system memory with the CPU | Uses less power and produces less heat than discrete graphics in Intel’s general comparison |
| Dedicated or discrete | Separate from the processor | Has dedicated graphics memory | Can provide higher performance in Intel’s general comparison, while using more power and producing more heat |
These are broad architectural differences, not a guarantee that every dedicated GPU will outperform every integrated GPU in every application. Actual performance and power use depend on the specific hardware and workload.

What it looks like in desktops and laptops
Desktop computers
A desktop dedicated graphics card is typically a separate board installed in a motherboard slot. The card includes the GPU and other supporting hardware. Whether a particular card fits and works in a computer depends on that system’s design and compatibility.
Laptops and compact PCs
Discrete graphics can also be built into laptops and small-form-factor computers; it does not always mean a user-removable desktop card. Some laptops use both integrated and discrete GPUs: NVIDIA’s Optimus description, for example, documents an arrangement in which the discrete GPU renders graphics while the integrated GPU handles display output (NVIDIA GeForce). Physical layout and display routing vary by computer.

When a dedicated GPU may matter
A separate GPU may be useful for demanding graphics work. Microsoft lists gaming, design, and intensive photo or video editing as examples of workloads suited to discrete GPUs (Microsoft Support). That does not mean any dedicated GPU will meet a particular game or program’s requirements; check the application’s requirements against the exact computer and GPU.

What to check in a computer specification
- GPU and workload: Identify the specific graphics hardware and compare it with the requirements of the games or creative applications you plan to use.
- Graphics memory: Check the memory arrangement and capacity for the particular model. Dedicated graphics memory is distinct from system memory shared by integrated graphics.
- Power and cooling: Discrete graphics generally draws more power and generates more heat than integrated graphics, so the computer’s power and cooling design matters.
- Form factor and compatibility: A desktop add-in card and a laptop’s discrete graphics are different physical implementations. Do not assume a desktop card can be installed in a laptop or that every desktop card fits every desktop.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between integrated graphics and discrete graphics?
Integrated graphics is built into the processor and shares system memory with the CPU. Discrete graphics uses a GPU separate from the processor and has dedicated graphics memory.
