A lazy Susan rotates; a fixed centerpiece tray does not. Rotation makes shared items easier to reach without passing bowls around, while a stationary tray provides a defined surface for an arrangement or for objects you may want to pick up together. Check the product’s construction rather than relying on the word “tray”: some products can be sold with an optional turntable.

Choose a lazy Susan for shared dishes
When several people need access to bowls, sauces, or condiments in the middle of the table, rotation can make serving more convenient. IKEA says the turning function of its SNUDDA makes serving easier; Pfaltzgraff describes its rotating tray as making contents accessible with a simple spin. These are product descriptions, not comparative performance tests.

Choose a fixed tray for a stable display or easy pickup
If the centerpiece is meant to stay arranged, or you want to lift and carry the whole display or serving surface, a fixed tray better suits that job. Think about what you will actually put on it: several shared bowls make rotation more useful, while a compact, deliberately arranged display may be easier to manage on a stationary surface.

How much table space does a lazy Susan need?
Measure the usable table surface and leave clearance for the tray to turn without hitting place settings, glassware, or other decor. Williams Sonoma advises considering clearance for comfortable rotation. A loaded tray also needs enough room to rotate without crowding nearby items; this is a practical placement precaution, not a claim about comparative safety.
Product dimensions offer examples, not a universal size range: IKEA lists its SNUDDA at 15 inches in diameter, while Pfaltzgraff lists a square model measuring 18 inches across. The right footprint depends on your table, place settings, and what you plan to serve.

Materials, care, and style
Check the care instructions for the exact product. IKEA’s SNUDDA is made of solid rubberwood with acrylic lacquer, a thermoplastic elastomer foot ring, and a steel fitting; IKEA says to wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Pfaltzgraff’s square serving tray is mango wood with wrought-iron handles and raised sides, and its listing also specifies damp-cloth cleaning. TableCraft’s commercial acacia model is hand-wash only. These examples do not establish that wood trays in general are dishwasher-safe.
Rotation does not rule out a decorative look. Minotti offers a furniture-scale revolving tray in marble or glass finishes, and Housewares International catalogs a 13-inch tempered-glass turntable for decorative centerpiece, appetizer-serving, or cake-plate use. Minotti describes its tray as suitable either for serving diners or as a decorative element; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparison.
