Try the browser’s decoder first, then load a WebAssembly (WASM) HEIC decoder only when the browser cannot handle the file and your app needs broader coverage. createImageBitmap() is widely available, but that does not mean every browser and device can decode HEIC. The 510 KB figure in the original headline is not verified: actual bundle size depends on the build output and libheif version.
Why try native decoding first?
A browser or operating system may already have the codec support needed to decode a HEIC image. Using that platform path can avoid downloading a software decoder for visitors whose environment can handle the file. WordPress documents a Safari path that uses macOS platform codecs and canvas-based HEIC/HEIF processing: WordPress Client-Side Media Processing.

The browser API createImageBitmap() creates an ImageBitmap from supported input and is broadly available. Its availability does not establish that HEIC is supported on a particular browser, operating system, device, or image file. Treat the actual decode attempt—not the existence of the API—as the test. See MDN’s createImageBitmap() documentation.

Use a fallback chain, not a support assumption
A practical sequence is to attempt browser decoding, try WebCodecs where the application supports that route, and then optionally load a WASM decoder. The heic-web project documentation describes this as an implementation pattern; it is not a guarantee of uniform browser coverage.

- Attempt native decoding. For a HEIC candidate, try the browser path and catch failures. Keep the user’s original file available until decoding succeeds.
- Optionally check WebCodecs. The
ImageDecoderAPI can decode encoded image data. Check whether the needed configuration is supported, but treat that result as advisory; it does not guarantee that the individual file will decode. See MDN’s ImageDecoder documentation. - Load WASM only if needed. If native decoding fails and your coverage requirements justify the extra download, dynamically import the software decoder. The actual code split depends on your bundler and build configuration.
- Provide a clear failure path. If every available decoder fails, tell the user that this file could not be processed and offer a useful next step, such as choosing another image or converting it before upload.
Browser, operating system, installed codecs, hardware, and the HEVC profile used by a particular image can all affect the result. A capability probe narrows possibilities; it does not replace handling failure for the actual file.
Measure the decoder you actually ship
Do not present 510 KB as an established decoder size without measuring your production build. The heic-web documentation notes that output size varies with bundler behavior and libheif version. Measure the built artifact and state exactly what the figure includes: decoder code alone or the complete chunk, and raw size or compressed/transferred bytes. Include the build and dependency versions so the number can be interpreted.

Dynamic loading can keep the decoder out of the initial download for users who never need it, but it does not eliminate its payload for users who do. Confirm in the production build that the decoder is actually in a separately loaded chunk; bundler configuration can affect splitting.

Validate both the native attempt and fallback with representative camera files on your target browsers and devices. Headless Linux tests cannot establish HEVC coverage on other platforms, and the heic-web project notes that its fixtures do not cover every Apple camera file.

- Convert as many .heic/.heif files as required in one go
- Instant conversion
- Use your HEIC images on other platforms
- Include files from the cameras and upload workflows your users actually use.
- Check orientation, color, output dimensions, and unusual HEIF transforms.
- Verify that failed decodes reach the intended fallback or user-facing error.
- Check memory handling and release decoded resources when they are no longer needed.
- Measure decode latency and responsiveness in your application rather than assuming one route is faster.
Choose based on coverage, payload, and correctness
Native decoding can reduce software-decoder downloads, while a WASM fallback can extend coverage where platform decoding fails. The trade-off depends on your users’ environments and files, so compare these implementation choices in your own app:
