Its key setup choice is whether each output takes a direct input or the Scaler path: choose Scaler when you need the MD-HX to convert the signal. Before buying or relying on one, check its serial family and confirm that your exact input, output, frame rate, and SDI level are supported.
This review covers the manufacturer’s current product information and V2 brochure, alongside the version 1.5 manual for basic menu operation. The manual predates the current V2 feature set, so check the documentation and firmware for your specific unit where newer features or menu details matter.

What the Decimator MD-HX does
The MD-HX converts between HDMI and 3G/HD/SD-SDI and can scale and convert frame rates. Decimator lists 245 input formats and 41 output formats for supported conversion paths; these are manufacturer-stated counts, not a guarantee that every source timing can be converted to every destination timing. Its supported broadcast formats include 1080p up to 50/59.94/60, 1080i, 720p, and SD formats. Confirm the exact combination you need against the unit and the current format information on Decimator’s MD-HX product page and V2 brochure.
The practical distinction is between routing and conversion. The MD-HX lets you select the source for HDMI OUT and SDI OUT independently: SDI IN, HDMI IN, or Scaler. Sending an input directly to an output is a pass-through route; it does not mean the scaler is processing that signal.
#1 Best Overall
- Auto Select: Active input to all outputs / or SDI to HDMI & HDMI to SDI if both inputs are active
- HDMI input to SDI output & SDI input to HDMI output
- SDI input to HDMI and SDI outputs
- HDMI input to HDMI and SDI outputs
- Supports 3G Level A and B and allows for conversion between both
Which MD-HX revision do you have?
Decimator identifies newer V2 serial families as CLD, CLE, and CLF, and legacy families as CLA, CLB, and CLC. Do not assume a legacy unit has V2 features just because it carries the MD-HX name. Check the serial label before purchase if particular features are essential, and confirm firmware and update eligibility using Decimator’s Downloads page.
Features listed for CLD, CLE, and CLF units
- 204 VESA formats on HDMI input and support for 2K formats.
- 16-channel audio-meter overlay, safe-action and safe-title graticules, center cross, customizable UMD text, and input/output format status.
- A 3G/HD/SD test-pattern generator with 41 selectable output formats and 58 patterns.
- Audio-tone generation on SDI and/or HDMI.
Decimator’s V2 announcement describes the upgrade as free, but the stated eligibility is limited to the specified serial families. Check the relevant unit and software before planning an update. These capabilities should not be attributed to CLA, CLB, or CLC hardware without confirmation from Decimator.

Connections, controls, and physical details
The unit has HDMI IN and SDI IN, configurable HDMI and SDI outputs, four SDI outputs for distribution, an LCD, and buttons for local menu control. USB supports control and firmware updates. Decimator lists a DC input range of +5 V to +32 V and dimensions of 79.5 × 123 × 29.5 mm in its V2 brochure. Confirm the supplied power adapter, cables, and exact hardware revision with the seller because packaging can vary.
Decimator describes the enclosure as a solid aluminium case and says the unit has no fan. It also claims its proprietary scaler improves sharpness and reduces aliasing compared with conventional polyphase approaches. Those image-quality statements are the manufacturer’s claims; no independent comparative testing is established here.

How to set up the MD-HX for HDMI-to-SDI or SDI-to-HDMI
The steps below follow the basic menu behavior in Decimator’s MD-HX Operating Manual version 1.5, copyright 2015–2023. The manual predates the current V2 feature set, so menu names or options on a newer unit may differ.
- Connect power and the source. Connect the source to HDMI IN or SDI IN, then connect the destination to the required HDMI or SDI output. On power-up, the LCD opens at Input Status, showing detected HDMI and SDI inputs and the scaler/DUC output format.
- Open Control. Use the left/right buttons to move between top-level menus. Select Control and press ENTER to open it. The manual describes ENTER as opening a menu or toggling a parameter; BACK returns to the previous level.
- Choose each output source. Set SDI OUT SOURCE and/or HDMI OUT SOURCE to SDI IN, HDMI IN, or Scaler, according to the signal path you need. Set the outputs independently if they need different sources.
- Select Scaler when conversion is needed. In Scaling, select the scaler source, reference, output format, and aspect controls as required by your chain. A direct input route bypasses the scaler, so it will not provide the scaler’s format conversion.
- Verify the resulting signal. Return to Input Status and check the detected inputs and scaler/DUC output format. Also verify the signal at the receiving device; the display does not replace checking that the downstream equipment accepts the chosen format.
- Allow settings to save. The version 1.5 manual says changes apply immediately and are saved after 10 seconds. Do not remove power during that interval.
Check compatibility before you depend on it
Compatibility depends on the actual source, destination, route, and selected format. Before purchase or installation, write down and verify each of the following against the intended signal chain:

- Input and output resolution and frame rate, including whether the source is progressive or interlaced.
- Whether the HDMI input is a supported computer/VESA timing or a supported video timing. The 204 VESA count applies to HDMI input on the specified V2 serial families; it does not establish universal support for every computer timing.
- The required SDI level. Decimator lists 3G level A and B support, including A/B conversion on its product information; verify the exact format and routing requirement for your installation.
- Whether you need direct routing or scaling/frame-rate conversion on one or both outputs.
- For overlays, test patterns, tone generation, 2K, or VESA support, whether the unit’s serial family and firmware are eligible.
The manufacturer’s format counts describe supported conversion paths, not every possible input-to-output pairing. For an unusual timing or a mission-critical chain, confirm the exact combination with Decimator or test the unit with the actual source and destination before the event.

The destination shows no picture
- Check Input Status to see whether the MD-HX detects the source on the input you used.
- In Control, confirm that the relevant output source is set to the connected input or to Scaler as intended.
- Confirm that the destination accepts the output format selected for the direct route or scaler path.
The signal passes through but does not change format
Check whether the output is assigned directly to HDMI IN or SDI IN. Select Scaler as the output source, then configure the scaler source and output format in Scaling if conversion is required.

A computer or unusual HDMI source is not recognized
Check the exact timing and the hardware revision. The V2 product information lists 204 VESA HDMI-input formats for CLD/CLE/CLF units; that count does not mean every computer timing is supported, and it should not be assumed for legacy serial families.
A feature shown in current product information is missing
Check the serial family and firmware rather than assuming a fault. V2 additions such as 2K, VESA input formats, test patterns, and monitoring overlays are tied to the newer serial families in Decimator’s current information.
Settings disappear after power is removed
After changing a parameter, leave the unit powered for at least the manual’s stated 10-second save interval. Avoid disconnecting power during that period.

Price and buying checks
Decimator lists a US$295 MSRP on its product page. That is the manufacturer’s stated MSRP, not a verified current retail price or availability quote. Ask the retailer to confirm the price, stock, included accessories, serial family, and firmware status. Decimator’s reseller directory can help identify sellers, but a directory entry alone does not establish a particular listing’s current stock or terms.
Or let it run in the cloud
