Deadlock and Dota 2 share MOBA foundations—heroes, lanes, progression, and team objectives—but they ask you to interact with those systems differently. Deadlock layers third-person aiming, firearms, and fast movement over its MOBA structure. Dota 2 uses the familiar top-down, point-and-click format, where ability and item decisions shape combat. The clearest comparison is not which is “more of a MOBA,” but how perspective, economy, hero roles, and movement change the way each match feels.

How heroes and team roles differ
Deadlock: think in terms of lineup contribution
Deadlock roles are best understood as what a hero contributes to a particular team composition, not as rigid instructions for one build. A durable initiator can start a fight, but still needs teammates who can follow up; a support-oriented ability does not mean the hero contributes no damage of its own. When evaluating a hero, consider how its abilities affect fights and what the lineup needs rather than treating a role label as a fixed position.

Hero selection rules are also changing. Valve’s Steam news describes advance hero preferences and a pregame phase in which ranked players can adjust their hero and starting lane. Those are update-specific details, not a safe basis for assuming that Deadlock uses the same selection process as Dota 2.

Dota 2: do not assume identical draft or role rules
Dota 2 also asks players to consider hero roles and team composition, but the available current references do not establish a detailed, up-to-date drafting comparison. It is more useful to compare the role a hero fills in a lineup than to claim that the games share the same positions, draft sequence, or selection constraints.

Lanes and economy: collecting income versus contesting it
Deadlock lanes connect farming to map pressure
Troopers advance along lanes and fight, while souls fund purchases and hero progression. That makes a lane more than a place to meet enemy players: it is also a route for income and a path toward enemy defenses. Choosing when to collect resources, contest an opponent, or rotate elsewhere connects the economy directly to map pressure.
The current Deadlock mechanics reference says a trooper’s last hit is no longer the gate to generating souls. It describes a ground reward to collect and a separate flying soul orb that can be contested. This distinction matters if you have seen older guides that describe a different last-hit rule. The retrieved current reference does not establish a dependable lane count, so map configuration should not be treated as a permanent comparison point.

Dota 2 uses the established lane-and-creep MOBA framework
Dota 2’s lanes and creeps are part of its familiar MOBA economy and progression loop. The available current official material does not establish fine-grained details here, so this comparison does not prescribe specific last-hit or denial rules. The high-level contrast is enough for orientation: Deadlock makes soul collection and its contested orb part of a third-person, mobile battlefield, while Dota 2 presents its lane economy through the top-down MOBA framework.

Deadlock combines weapons, abilities, and mobility
Deadlock is not simply “guns instead of spells.” Combat includes ranged weapons, hero abilities, melee attacks, and parrying. Its mechanics reference distinguishes weapon and Spirit damage, and notes that damage type and the stat that improves an attack are separate questions; some bullets can also carry added Spirit effects. The result is a layered combat system in which aiming and positioning happen alongside ability timing and broader MOBA decisions.

Movement is part of that texture. Dashes, jumps, mantling, and ziplines affect how players approach a fight, escape, or reposition. Aiming is therefore not an isolated shooter skill: it shares attention with choosing when to commit, use an ability, or move through the map.
Dota 2 centers combat on the top-down MOBA exchange
Dota 2’s top-down, point-and-click model puts the emphasis on command selection and on deciding when to use abilities and items. This is a difference in control demands, not proof that one game is categorically easier or more complex. Player impressions sometimes describe Dota as more macro- and game-knowledge-focused and Deadlock as more mechanically demanding, but those are opinions rather than measured comparisons.

Which game may suit you better?
- Try Deadlock if you want MOBA-style heroes and objectives combined with third-person aiming, shooter movement, and direct weapon combat.
- Try Dota 2 if you prefer a top-down MOBA control model and want combat decisions framed around abilities, items, and team coordination.
- If you are moving from one to the other, expect to adapt to controls and information priorities, not just learn a new set of hero abilities. Compare how you interact with the economy and how movement or positioning shapes a fight.
Deadlock’s rules and availability are still evolving
As reported by PC Gamer on September 30, 2026, quoting Valve’s development update, Deadlock remains unfinished for public release and Valve is continuing core development. The report describes larger item redesigns and alternative modes as speculative and dependent on playtesting. That context matters when reading guides: hero selection, items, lanes, and modes may change, and a detail that was accurate in one update may not describe a later build.
