The cheapest fix for a PC’s apparently dead USB port is to check the device, cable, and connection before paying for a repair. If the port itself has failed but another suitable port still works, use that port—or add a USB hub if you need more connections. A hub is a workaround, not a repair.
How to tell whether the port is really dead
A failed peripheral or cable can look like a failed port. Diagnose the parts one at a time before buying anything.

- Test the device and cable elsewhere. Connect them to another computer or a known-working port. If they fail there too, the issue may be the device or cable.
- Try a known-working device in the suspect port. If it works, the original device or cable is the likely cause.
- Connect directly to the PC. Bypass any hub or dock while testing; it may be causing the connection or power problem.
- Restart the computer and inspect the port. Look for visible damage or debris. Do not force a connector into a loose or damaged socket.
MSI’s USB troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for damage, reinstalling USB Root Hub and host-controller drivers, and updating Windows and BIOS if the issue persists. Follow the current instructions for your PC model and operating system: MSI USB troubleshooting guidance.
What to do based on which ports still work
| What you find | Cheapest sensible next step | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| One port fails, another suitable port works | Use the working port. If you need more connections, consider a USB hub. | A hub needs a working PC port and does not repair the failed one. |
| Desktop front ports fail, rear ports work | Check whether the internal front-panel USB cable is disconnected. | Opening the case requires safe shutdown, unplugging power, and electrostatic-discharge precautions. |
| No ports work, or a port is visibly damaged | Use the PC maker’s model-specific diagnostics or arrange service. | A hub will not help if there is no suitable working port; repair cost depends on the model and fault. |
If only the desktop’s front USB ports fail
When rear ports work but front ports do not, the case’s internal front-panel cable may have come loose. HP’s guidance identifies this as a possible cause and recommends checking whether rear ports work: HP USB port troubleshooting.

- EIGHT PORTS FROM ONE PCIE SLOT: Add 8 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports running at 5Gbps, 2 USB-C and 6 USB-A, to a desktop, server or NAS through a single PCIe x1 slot, for keyboards, drives, docks, printers and controllers.
- THREE-GROUP 5V/3A POWER MANAGEMENT: USB-C 1-2, USB-A 3-5 and USB-A 6-8 are isolated power groups, so the card sustains up to eight 5V/1A devices or three 5V/2A devices without an external power supply.
- UPD720201 + UPD720210 DUAL CONTROLLERS: The same Renesas dual-chip architecture used in servers and professional motherboards, with high-frequency ceramic and solid-state capacitors on every port.
- DRIVER-FREE ON WINDOWS AND LINUX: Recognised instantly on Windows 11/10/8, Windows Server 2012-2022 and most Linux distributions on Intel, AMD and ARM platforms, with drivers supplied for legacy Windows. Not compatible with Mac OS.
- CLEAN SELF-POWERED INSTALL: Draws power entirely from the PCIe x1 slot with no SATA connector or extra cables, and fits standard desktop towers with the standard-profile bracket. Not intended for slim cases.
If you inspect the connection yourself, shut the PC down and unplug its power first. Follow the computer maker’s instructions and electrostatic-discharge precautions; if you are not comfortable opening the case, ask a qualified technician.
When a USB hub is a useful workaround
A hub can provide additional connections through a port that still works. It is worth considering only after testing the devices directly, since a hub can itself cause connection or power issues. For devices that draw substantial power, check whether the hub’s power arrangement and specifications meet their needs. A repair reference lists an external hub as an alternative to repairing a failed laptop port, but it does not restore the damaged socket: iFixit discussion of a failed USB port.

- 【7 ports PCIe USB card】 There is a 2-phase independent power supply module, which can feed one interface per output port to escape power shortage. Can operate without an external or auxiliary power supply; the seven interfaces operate independently and do not affect each other. Seven USB 3.0 Type A ports can be added externally to the PC case. Note: Not compatible with PS3/PS4.
- 【High Speed Transmission】USB3.0 theoretical speed up to 5Gbps, provides 10 times faster transmission speed than USB2.0. This usb expansion card enables quick access to files and transfer of HD movies, photos, music, etc.
- 【Stable power supply】The usb pcie card adopt NEC720201&NEC720210 chip. The USB interface can supply 5V2A power to external devices. Solid capacitors with good performance are used for low impedance, low temperature stability, and high temperature wave resistance.
- 【7 independent solid capacitors】Each interface has a stable voltage solid capacitor to ensure a stable power supply. The dielectric material of the solid capacitors is made of conductive polymer material, which has the advantages of high stability, long life, and low ESR (faster charging and discharging speed).
- 【Wide compatibility】 PCI-E X1 X4 X8 X16 compatible. Note: Not compatible with older PCI, backward compatible with USB 2.0 / 1.1, 64-bit and 32-bit Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / XP / Linux, not Mac compatible. Note: WIN8 and WIN10/11 users do not need to install the drive; XP and WIN7 users can download, unzip, install, and complete. (The corresponding installation directory for CD is DRIVERSǐ201R30230.EXE.)
USB-C ports need a capability check
USB-C describes the connector shape; it does not guarantee USB4, charging, display output, or Thunderbolt support. The PC, cable, and connected device all need to support the feature you want. Microsoft also lists dirt, an unsuitable charger or cable, and a connection through a hub among possible causes of USB-C charging problems: Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Stop using a port that is visibly damaged or loose; forcing a plug can make the damage worse. ASUS recommends service evaluation for physical port or cable damage. Repair methods and prices vary by model and fault, so there is no reliable universal repair price: ASUS USB troubleshooting guidance.

- 【USB3.2 8 Interface】 Type-A + Type-C USB3 dual interface, can run two devices at the same time, compatible with the existing USB peripheral products. In order to make the power supply of each interface stable, the capacitor adopts the solid state patch type that can withstand the high temperature of 250 degrees.
- 【 High Quality Chip】 USB 3.2 expansion card adopts new high quality NEC720210+NEC720201 main control chip and advanced low voltage power supply process, the maximum usb3.2 Gen2 supports 10gbs(theoretical value).
- 【Security & Reliability】 When the external USB device is broken down or the current is too large, immediately cut off the power to protect the peripheral and personal computer. After the fault is rectified, the system automatically recovers. Each port is equipped with independent capacitors that do not require an external power supply, ensuring a more stable power supply. The two interfaces can operate independently and do not interfere with each other, so the operation is more stable.
- 【Stability & Heat Dissipation】 The use of alloy materials with high thermal conductivity can effectively heat dissipation, so that the expansion card is always at room temperature and the work is more stable.
If no port works and basic checks do not resolve the issue, the cause may involve software, the USB controller, the motherboard, or physical damage. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific diagnostics or arrange service rather than assuming an external hub will solve it.
