Day 1: I Built a Pomodoro Timer That Roasts Me

The title’s roast mechanism and components remain unconfirmed, but separate maker projects show the design choices behind software and hardware Pomodoro timers.

The title sets up a maker story, but the project’s original post, code, platform, and roast mechanism could not be identified from the available sources. That means its exact build cannot be described reliably. What can be explained is the design challenge behind the idea: keep the timer’s work-and-break behavior separate from the roast that gives it personality.

What the timer needs to do

A Pomodoro timer has a functional core and an interaction layer. The core tracks a work interval, signals when it ends, and handles a break; the personality layer decides what the user sees or hears at the transition. In a roasting timer, the roast is an output choice, not a timekeeping requirement.

  • Timekeeping: show or otherwise communicate how much time remains.
  • Session transitions: move between work and break states, with durations the user can choose.
  • Alerts: make the end of an interval noticeable.
  • Roast behavior: determine when a jab appears and whether it is displayed, spoken, or delivered another way.

The title alone does not establish whether the roast is a stored line, generated text, synthesized speech, prerecorded audio, or something else. It also does not identify the software, hardware, or timer logic used in the build.

Pomodoro timing is configurable, not a fixed rule

There is no single interval pattern established by these project examples. A Flowkeeper README gives a 25-minute work session followed by a five-minute rest as an example, while a separate Devpost timer describes 25- or 50-minute work periods and a short break. Those are examples, not proof that one schedule is required or best for everyone.

#1 Best Overall
Rotating Productivity Timer 5/25/10/50, Desk Flip Timer, ADHD Tool
  • A Real 5/25 Task Timer. The 5/25 working or studying technique is a time management method based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by 5 -minute breaks. We have preset 5, 25 minutes for you, you don’t have to set it every time by yourself. Other similar cube timers in the market are not real 5/25 timers as they don’t have preset 5, 25 minutes.
  • Rotating Productivity Timer with Gra vity Sensor. We have preset 5, 25, 10, 50 minutes for gra vity sensing mode. You only need to flip the timer to the preset number with facing upwards, and then it will automatically start to countdown. Flip the timer screen facing upwards to stop the timing; Flip the timer screen facing downwards to reset it to zero.
  • Support Custom Modes. You can also adjust this digital timer to other values that you want as it supports 00-99 minutes and 59 seconds timing. You can also adjust it to countdown mode or stopwatch mode.
  • 3 Volume Levels: Silent/High Volume/Low Volume. In silent mode, the vibration is noticeable at your desk without disturbing others nearby. High volume: 90-100dB; Low volume: 70-80dB.
  • Great for Work, School, Office, Kitchen. This cube timer with stylish and aesthetic design is a great present for students, friends, or coworkers, and families, people with ADHD, using it for work/ office, back to school & off to college/ classroom/study, workout, kitchen, etc.

Flowkeeper’s README describes configurable sessions, task lists, sounds, and plaintext session data, but also says its v2 application was still in progress. Its listed capabilities should not be taken as confirmation that every feature is currently released or working. Flowkeeper on GitHub

Different ways makers have built timers

These examples show possible design choices, not components or features of the timer in the title. They are not benchmarked against one another.

Approach Documented example Design trade-off shown
Arduino desk device A Devpost project describes an Arduino Uno, a 16×2 LCD, and a piezo buzzer, with a remaining-time display, end-of-interval alert, and break tracking. A dedicated screen and buzzer provide visible and audible feedback; the example does not establish the parts used by the titled build. Devpost Arduino timer
Python timer A separate Devpost project describes start and stop controls and progress marks. A software interface can show progress without establishing a dedicated device’s display or alert design. Devpost Python timer
Battery-oriented e-ink device A Hack Club project diary describes an AA-powered desk timer with mechanical switches and an e-ink display. Its creator discusses changing from an ESP32-C3 to an ATSAMD21E18A. This documents a distinct low-power hardware path, not the titled project’s parts or performance. Hack Club project diary

The examples make the central design choice clear: software can keep the timer on a computer, while dedicated hardware can give it a separate display, controls, and alert. The appropriate trade-offs depend on how the device is meant to be used; these sources do not provide comparable measurements of cost, battery life, or build difficulty.

What must be confirmed before describing this exact build

To turn the title into a technically specific maker story, its creator’s original post or build materials would need to establish:

  • A Real 5/25 Task Timer. The 5/25 working or studying technique is a time management method based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by 5 -minute breaks. We have preset 5, 25 minutes for you, you don’t have to set it every time by yourself. Other similar hexagon timers in the market are not real 5/25 timers as they don’t have preset 5, 25 minutes.
  • Rotating Productivity Timer Flip Timer. We have preset 5, 25, 10, 30,60 minutes for gra vity sensing mode. You only need to flip the timer to the preset number with facing upwards, and then it will automatically start to countdown. Flip the timer screen facing upwards to stop the timing; Flip the timer screen facing downwards to reset it to zero.
  • Stopwatch Timer Mode. Simply flip the timer to the side with stopwatch icon facing upwards, it will start to count up. Stopwatch timing range: 00-99 minutes and 59 seconds.
  • 3 Volume Levels: Mute/Vibration/Alarm. In vibration mode, the vibration is noticeable at your desk without disturbing others nearby. Alarm volume: 70-80dB. In mute mode, the screen will flash to remind you which is suitable for using in the library.

  • the project’s original source and any public code repository;
  • the platform, programming language, and confirmed hardware parts, if any;
  • how time is tracked and how work and break states change;
  • what triggers a roast, and whether the lines are selected, generated, spoken, or shown as text.

Without those details, attributing an Arduino, Python, LCD, buzzer, e-ink screen, or particular roast mechanism to this build would confuse other makers’ projects with the one named in the title.
