Dawn of War IV director Jan Theysen describes the Space Marines as an elite faction built around a clear tradeoff: individually powerful, upgradeable units in a smaller force that cannot control every part of the map at once. His comments offer a picture of the faction’s intended play, not independently verified balance advice.
What makes the Space Marines an elite faction?
In an interview published October 6, 2026, Dawn of War IV director Jan Theysen called the Space Marines “the most elite faction” in the game. He characterized them as “the big boys” but stressed that there are few of them: Marines are meant to be expensive and strong individually, rather than numerous enough to cover the whole map. The interview presents this as the faction’s intended identity.

Theysen says early-game enemy units cannot defeat a Space Marine one-on-one. That is a developer’s qualitative claim, not a universal matchup result established by independent testing. The practical tension he describes is that Marines can win a local fight yet still be absent from other parts of the map: “wherever you are you are winning, but you are not everywhere.”

Theysen’s advice is to contest resource points early and lean on Marines’ strength in individual engagements. He also suggests recapturing enemy points: in his view, opponents may have difficulty dislodging a Marine unit once it is in position. That approach comes with a coverage problem, because a small force cannot quickly occupy every point. These are the director’s strategic recommendations, not independently tested multiplayer findings.

Deployment tools are intended to help address the problem of distance. Marines can call in buildings from orbit and place them anywhere on the map, including near resource points or closer to the front, without sending a builder unit. They can also produce units in reserve and deploy them where needed with a Drop Pod or Thunderhawk. Theysen describes those options as support for quick responses and “shock and awe” tactics.
Why preserving units matters
Because the faction fields fewer, more expensive units, losses are especially costly. Theysen says a replacement also needs upgrades before it can restore the force to full strength. Preserving experienced, equipped units is therefore part of the intended faction rhythm, rather than treating losses as easy to replace.

How squad and vehicle customization works
Theysen says players can configure units for different jobs, echoing the specialized-squad feel he associates with the original Dawn of War. His examples include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Intercessors: equipment choices can emphasize longer range or faster firing.
- Dreadnoughts: weapon configurations can specialize against vehicles or infantry.
The point is role selection within the roster: a squad or vehicle’s equipment can be chosen to suit the task rather than relying on one universal setup. The interview does not establish final unit statistics or a definitive list of all loadouts.

Which Space Marine units and characters have been named?
Theysen says the faction is not built around one singular endgame super-unit. He points instead to a broad roster that includes specialized infantry and several heavy choices. The interview names Terminators, Bladeguards, Eliminators, Gladiator Lancers, Gladiator Reapers and the Redemptor Dreadnought. Theysen describes the Redemptor as the game’s biggest tank and one of its largest units, while saying it is not on the scale of the Adeptus Mechanicus Imperial Knight. These are interview descriptions, not confirmation that the list is the complete final roster.
Four playable Space Marine characters are also identified in the interview:

How the developers approached Space Marine scale and speed
Theysen says the design challenge was making Marines feel both massive and quick despite their large shoulder armor and restricted movement. He also says the tutorial begins with the Imperial Guard to establish a baseline for the difference in scale and power. These are the developer’s stated design goals, not independent assessments of how the finished game feels.

Theysen says the shift from a September release to December followed playtest feedback and gave the team time for desired additions, performance improvements and visual polish. That is the developer’s explanation for the delay; it does not independently establish the game’s performance or final quality.
