Discovery will be called Skydance, David Ellison announced on October 2, 2026. The name comes from Ellison’s production company. As of October 3, the merger had not been reported as closed; the companies expected it to close on October 6, subject to the remaining closing conditions.
Why will the combined company be called Skydance?
Skydance is the name of the production company Ellison founded roughly two decades ago and merged with Paramount in 2025. Ellison said the combined company needs an identity of its own while keeping its entertainment brands prominent. Axios reported his explanation that the name would give the company “an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.” Axios

The announcement concerns the parent company’s planned name. It does not, by itself, establish that Paramount, Warner Bros., or other brands will disappear or that consumer-facing services will change.
Has the merger closed?
Not according to the status reported as of October 3, 2026. Axios reported that the companies expected closing on October 6. That was a target date, not confirmation of a completed merger; closing remained subject to the conditions in the companies’ filings. Axios

What did the U.S. court order change?
On September 30, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California entered a consent decree resolving a lawsuit brought by 12 states. The states had alleged that the deal violated Section 7 of the Clayton Act. The order modified the no-close order to permit the merger to proceed; it did not mean the merger had already closed. U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín described the proposed decree as “a fair, reasonable, and good faith approach to address the competitive harms” alleged in the states’ lawsuit, according to the Associated Press. Associated Press
Selected commitments in the decree
The SEC filing sets out obligations for a five-year commitment period. These are selected terms, not a complete account of the decree, which also includes monitoring, remedies, conditions, and further detail.
- U.S. film releases: At least 30 films in each of the first two commitment years, followed by at least 32 in each of the next three. The annual minimum includes specified wide-release films and at least four independent films. At least half of the films counted must be produced or jointly produced by the combined company.
- Theatrical and streaming windows: Counted films generally must receive at least a 45-day theatrical window. They may not be promoted as streaming or premium-video-on-demand releases before day 30, and cannot reach subscription streaming until at least 90 days after their initial U.S. theatrical exhibition, subject to the decree’s detailed terms.
- U.S. production spending: At least $300 million more per year, or $1.5 billion more across the commitment period, compared with the companies’ combined 2025 levels.
- Cable negotiations: The company must negotiate basic-cable affiliation agreements separately for the two channel portfolios under the decree’s restrictions.
- News editorial independence: Within 180 days after closing, the company must establish a five-member News Editorial Independence Board to set guiding principles and resolve specified editorial disputes concerning CBS News and CNN.
- Free streaming: Pluto TV, or a successor or substantially equivalent replacement, must be maintained as a free ad-supported streaming service at or above the decree’s stated service and quality levels.
The SEC filing containing the decree is the source for these legal commitments.

What did the UK regulator decide?
The UK Competition and Markets Authority cleared the anticipated acquisition on August 6, 2026, and its case page records the inquiry as closed on August 17. This is a separate UK regulatory milestone; it should not be taken as confirmation that every closing condition was met or that the merger had closed. UK Competition and Markets Authority
