President Donald Trump was expected to name Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as his top artificial-intelligence adviser, often called an “AI czar,” according to reports published October 2, 2026. The White House had not formally announced the appointment and said personnel announcements would come directly from the president.
Who is Trump expected to name as AI czar?
The Washington Post, Axios and Reuters reported on October 2 that Clayton was expected to take the role, citing people familiar with the decision. The White House response, quoted by The Washington Post, was: “Any reporting until then is baseless speculation.” Axios quoted a White House official saying: “Any personnel announcement will be announced directly by the President. Any reporting until then is baseless speculation.” Those statements mean the selection should be treated as expected, not confirmed.

Trump had publicly indicated interest in Clayton days earlier. Asked about him as a possible AI czar on September 29, Trump told Axios he was “a good man. He’s right here. That’s a good idea.” That comment was not an appointment announcement.

Reports said Clayton was expected to remain Director of National Intelligence if he also took the AI adviser role. The White House had not confirmed either the appointment or the proposed dual assignment in the October 2 accounts.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence identifies Clayton as DNI and says he was sworn in on August 3, 2026. It describes the DNI as head of the Intelligence Community and the president’s principal adviser on intelligence matters. The role would therefore add an AI policy assignment to an existing senior national-security office, if the reported arrangement is formally made.
How the reported appointment developed
- September 19, 2026: Trump said he would create an “AI Force” modeled on the Space Force and name an AI czar. Axios reported that he offered few details about the Force’s function, budget or place in government.
- September 29, 2026: Trump described Clayton as a good choice for AI czar when speaking to Axios.
- October 2, 2026: The Washington Post, Axios and Reuters reported that Clayton was expected to get the adviser role. The White House said the president would make personnel announcements.
What is known about the AI czar role and AI Force?
The public descriptions available in the cited reporting leave basic implementation questions unanswered. The AI Force’s remit, budget and organizational home were unclear, and the reports did not establish what authority, staffing or formal responsibilities the AI adviser would receive. No confirmed competing candidate was identified in these accounts.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Clayton has framed AI as both a security concern and an opportunity. Axios quoted him from his DNI confirmation hearing: “When something is both an opportunity and a threat, you better get your arms around it.” In the same account, he characterized AI as “not only an opportunity but a threat.” Those remarks indicate his stated concern about the technology; they do not define the remit of a new post or settle administration policy.
Axios also reported that Trump has favored a light regulatory touch as calls for government intervention have grown. Clayton’s reported selection alone does not establish a finalized policy direction.

Why the administration is using “Super Intelligence”
A September 29 White House fact sheet described an executive order directing executive-branch departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI,” rather than “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI,” in specified official materials. The listed contexts include official correspondence, public communications, policy documents and non-statutory documents.
This is a terminology instruction for specified executive-branch communications as described by the White House. It does not show that the underlying technology or the reported adviser role has been redefined in law.
