Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo protect your personal information on dating apps, share less identifying detail, secure your account, limit location access, and keep early conversations in the app. Treat verification badges as limited signals—not proof that someone is safe or honest—and learn how to block, unmatch, and report before you need to.
How can you protect your personal information on a dating app?
Start by thinking beyond what you type into your profile. A photo reused on a public social account, a workplace clue, a familiar street in the background, or a precise location setting may help a stranger connect your dating profile to your real identity or routine. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner advises users to check privacy settings and consider what their profiles reveal.

Before creating or updating your profile
- Leave out your full name, home address, employer or workplace, regular schedule, and details that identify your children. Avoid posting children’s photos.
- Choose profile photos that are not also posted publicly on your social accounts; reused images may make it easier to link your accounts. Be cautious about linking social profiles if they reveal your identity, friends, or wider network.
- Set profile visibility and location options deliberately. If the app offers private or incognito visibility or approximate location, consider whether those settings meet your needs.
- Review the app’s privacy policy and requested permissions. Check whether location, contacts, camera, or other access is necessary for the features you want to use, and limit access where your device allows it.
- Photos can contain location information in their metadata. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s August 2023 guidance recommends considering location settings; if you do not want camera location tags embedded in photos, turn off location tagging in your camera settings.
How to stay safe on dating apps while messaging
Keep early conversations in the app
Stay in the dating app while you are getting to know a match. Moving to text or social media can reveal your phone number, location, contacts, or other parts of your network, and you may lose access to some protections and reporting context available in the app. If you want a voice or video conversation without sharing your phone number, use an in-app calling feature where one is available; the feature does not establish that a match is trustworthy.
Protect your account and sensitive information
- Use a unique, strong password for the dating account, and enable multifactor authentication (MFA) if the app offers it. A password manager can help you keep separate passwords for different accounts.
- Do not give a match your password, bank-account information, or sensitive identity details. Requests for credentials or money are a reason to stop and reassess rather than share more.
- Review account and device permissions occasionally, especially location access. A permission that is useful for one feature may not be necessary for everything you do in the app.
What dating-app verification can—and cannot—tell you
Verification is a limited signal, not a safety guarantee. A photo check may indicate that submitted images match the profile images under the app’s process; an ID check may involve submitted documents. Neither proves a person’s intentions, honesty, full identity, or safety. eSafety cautions that photo matching by itself does not verify identity. Treat a badge as one piece of information, not a substitute for judgment or the app’s safety controls.

Know how to block, unmatch, and report
Find the app’s block, unmatch, and report controls before a problem arises. If a conversation becomes threatening or suspicious, stop engaging and use the appropriate control. When safe and useful, retain relevant messages or profile details: a person may later unmatch or block, making the material harder to access. Do not keep communicating just to collect evidence if doing so could put you at risk.
eSafety recommends checking not only these controls but also profile visibility, location options, contact permissions, in-app calling, verification, content warnings, community guidelines, and privacy policies. Review whether the service says it shares data with advertisers or other parties. The exact controls and labels differ by app and can change, so confirm them in the current settings and help pages for your region.

Plan a first in-person meeting safely
Tinder’s current safety tips advise meeting in a public place, telling someone your plan, and arranging your own transport. You can also tell a trusted person where and with whom you will meet, keep your phone charged, and use any in-app date-sharing feature if available. These are practical precautions, not guarantees of safety.
