A dating-app prototype called Coffee Meets Codex puts projects, curiosities, and experiments before photos and job titles. Its creator, Crystal Chang, says she built it during a short hack-day sprint and that it placed third in attendee voting. The concept is intriguing, but the demo used fictional people and projects; it does not show that real users trusted it more or found better matches.
What changes when a dating profile starts with projects?
Most dating profiles invite a quick judgment from a photo, a job title, or a short bio. Coffee Meets Codex reverses that sequence: visitors encounter a person’s projects, curiosities, and experiments first, with photos and job titles taking a back seat. Chang describes the idea as a different opening for getting to know someone, not as a proven way to improve dating.

That shift changes what the first impression is made of. A project can give people something specific to ask about—a hobby prototype, a creative experiment, or a subject someone keeps exploring. But a project is still only one part of a person, and seeing it first does not establish compatibility or trust on its own.

Chang says Friend and Lover were separate, explicit choices in the concept. Rather than leaving visitors to infer whether someone wanted friendship or romance from a profile, the prototype presented those intentions as distinct paths. That is a reported design choice; the write-up does not establish whether users found it clearer or preferred it.

What did the hack-day demo actually show?
Chang says Coffee Meets Codex was built at DevDay Exchange Community Hack Day: Taipei on October 4, 2026. The team had a few hours to make a working prototype and a one-minute demo. She reports that it placed third in attendee voting, in which checked-in attendees ranked teams on usefulness, creativity, and a convincing working demo. This is the creator’s account of the event result, not an independently verified competition record.
The preview people and projects were fictional. As a result, the demo illustrated a product flow; it did not demonstrate real participants matching, choosing to meet, or having successful dating outcomes.

What features did Chang report building?
- Daily briefs: fictional Friend and Lover briefs showed the two stated intentions.
- Owner-supplied information: people supplied their own profile and project links; Chang says the prototype did not scrape them.
- Consent and control: the described features included consent, withdrawal, and blocking controls.
- Age limit: the prototype was limited to people aged 18 and over.
These are features as described by the creator, not findings from a security audit or an evaluation of how well the controls worked. A stated block or withdrawal control, for example, does not by itself establish how quickly or completely data would be removed.

Chang reports using React 19 and Vinext, with Cloudflare Workers and D1. Sites-managed ChatGPT identity handled authentication. The project had two separate surfaces: a static public showcase that did not require login, and a full app that did. The showcase was deployed from showcase/ to docs/ on GitHub Pages.

Those are implementation details reported in Chang’s write-up, not independently audited code or security findings. The distinction between a public showcase and a login-required app also mattered to the presentation: the showcase could explain the concept and show a demo film and fictional previews, then link interested visitors into the full app.
Why was a separate showcase useful?
A working prototype and a clear public explanation solve different problems. Chang’s account describes the showcase as a handoff for people who were not at the event: it provided context, a film, and fictional examples rather than assuming visitors already understood the idea from a live demo.

Her reflection captures that lesson: “Shipping is not the moment the code works.” The line is about communicating a project after a hack day, not evidence that the dating concept itself succeeded.
What can—and can’t—be concluded from the result?
The reported third-place finish suggests the demo was compelling enough to rank among the event entries under the attendees’ stated criteria. It cannot establish product-market fit, sustained interest, safety, increased trust, or better dating outcomes. Those questions would require evidence from real users and actual use over time; the write-up does not provide it.

Chang asks readers, “would you trust meeting someone through their side projects?” That remains an open question rather than a finding about people generally. A project-first introduction may give a conversation a more concrete starting point, while still leaving identity, intent, and personal safety to be considered separately.
