To find the time between two dates and times, enter both date-time values in a duration calculator. It can report the difference in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. The key is choosing the right interpretation: elapsed time, calendar years and months, business days, or time across locations with different time zones.
How to calculate the duration between two dates and times
- Choose a calculator that accepts the detail you have. For a result down to seconds, enter the dates and times, not dates alone.
- Enter the start and end points. Check that the order is correct and that both times use the intended time zone.
- Read the result as the tool defines it. Days, hours, minutes, and seconds generally describe elapsed units; years and months follow calendar rules and can vary with the dates involved.
- Check special conditions. If the endpoints are in different locations, span a daylight saving time change, or should exclude weekends or holidays, use a calculator that explicitly supports that requirement.
Time and Date AS describes its Time Duration Calculator as finding “the number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds between 2 given points in time.” Its Time Duration Calculator FAQ distinguishes this ordinary duration calculation from separate tools for business days and time-zone differences.

Elapsed duration and calendar years or months are different
Days, hours, minutes, and seconds express elapsed units. A result such as years, months, and days instead breaks a date interval into calendar units. A month is not a fixed number of days, so different calculation rules can produce results that seem unexpected near the end of a short month.

In its common-year examples, January 28 to March 1 is one month and one day. January 31 to March 1 is also one month and one day: adding a month first reaches February 28, then the remaining day is counted. There is no single perfect way to express every date interval in months and years because calendar months have different lengths.

Time zones, daylight saving time, and leap seconds
A basic elapsed-time calculation is suitable when both endpoints use one agreed time zone and the calculator’s treatment of clock changes matches your needs. If endpoints refer to different locations, or the interval crosses a daylight saving time transition, use a tool that accepts locations or time zones and explicitly accounts for those transitions.
Time and Date says its ordinary duration calculator does not account for daylight saving time or leap seconds. Its separate Time Zone Duration Calculator accounts for daylight saving time switches. These statements describe Time and Date’s tools; other calculators may handle these cases differently, so check their documentation.

Calculate date differences in Google Sheets or Excel
Google Sheets
Google Sheets documents DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, unit) for whole years (Y), whole months (M), days (D), and remainder units such as MD, YM, and YD. Choose the unit that matches the question. Its documentation notes that months and years count only when the end date reaches or passes the corresponding day number. For example, it gives four months between September 30, 2015, and February 28, 2016. A numeric answer can also look like a date if the result cell is formatted as a date; set an appropriate number format when the displayed value is unexpected. See Google’s DATEDIF documentation.

Microsoft documents DATEDIF for differences in full days, months, and years, including combined-unit calculations. It also warns that the function can calculate incorrectly in some scenarios and specifically advises against the MD argument when accuracy matters. Avoid relying on an MD-based years-months-days formula as universally reliable. For a date-time interval intended as elapsed time, use a calculation and cell format that display a duration, then check time-zone and daylight saving requirements separately. See Microsoft’s guidance on calculating the difference between two dates.
