For an Obsidian developer vault, Dataview Query Language (DQL) is usually the clearest starting point for project indexes, task lists, and review queues. A DQL block begins with an output type such as TABLE, LIST, or TASK; a source and commands such as WHERE and SORT then shape its results. The examples below show useful patterns and explain the common reasons they fail.
Choose the right Dataview mode first
Dataview can display computed information through DQL code blocks, inline DQL, DataviewJS blocks, and inline DataviewJS. For everyday dashboards, start with a DQL block: it is suited to readable, shareable queries that collect pages or tasks. Inline DQL is for one value in a sentence or heading, not a multi-page collection. DataviewJS can express more complex transformations, but it requires JavaScript familiarity and deserves code review. The official Dataview documentation describes the modes and their capabilities.

| Need | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A table or list assembled from multiple notes | DQL code block | Uses query types and commands to select, filter, sort, and display pages. |
| One computed value in a sentence | Inline DQL | Evaluates a single expression rather than collecting multiple pages. |
| A transformation DQL cannot express, and you can review JavaScript | DataviewJS block | The JavaScript API provides more flexibility, with a correspondingly greater code-review burden. |
Useful DQL queries for a developer vault
These examples assume your notes use the named folders, tags, and fields. Adjust them to match your vault; Dataview can only report metadata that your notes actually contain.
Build a project index
```dataview
TABLE status, language, repo
FROM "Projects"
SORT status ASC, file.name ASC
```
This creates a project table with status, language, and repository fields, sorted by status and then note name. If some project notes lack one of those fields, expect incomplete cells; standardize the metadata before treating the table as a complete inventory.
#1 Best Overall
- Crisp writing pages provide plenty of space for personal reflections, sketching, or for recording favorite quotations or poems.
- Premium 120 gsm paper takes pen or pencil beautifully.
- Paper is acid-free and of archival quality.
- Light gray lines subtly guide your writing.
- A ribbon bookmark keeps your place.
Collect unfinished tasks from active projects
```dataview
TASK
FROM #projects/active
WHERE !completed
SORT due ASC
```
Use a consistent tag convention for active projects. Sorting by due is most useful when that field is consistently stored as a date.
See recently modified project notes
```dataview
TABLE file.mtime AS "Modified", status
FROM "Projects"
SORT file.mtime DESC
LIMIT 20
```
LIMIT 20 caps the displayed result count. It does not make an overly broad source a good choice by itself: keep the query scoped to a folder, tag, or other relevant source, especially in a large vault.
Make a review queue
```dataview
LIST
FROM #work
WHERE status = "review"
SORT file.name ASC
```
A stable field name and controlled status values make this queue predictable. If notes use inconsistent spellings or different fields for the same idea, normalize that metadata before relying on the results.

Show one inline value
Open tasks: `= length(filter(this.file.tasks, (t) => !t.completed))`
This inline DQL expression counts unfinished tasks in the current note. It produces one value; use a DQL block when the goal is to collect pages or tasks across the vault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why Dataview queries break
A DQL block needs an output type
Begin with a query type such as TABLE, LIST, or TASK. Then add commands such as FROM, WHERE, SORT, GROUP BY, or LIMIT as needed. A block containing only a source or filter is missing the query’s output type.
DQL resembles SQL, but is not SQL
SQL experience can help with the general idea of selecting and filtering data, but Dataview has its own structure and syntax. Do not paste a SQL query and expect it to work unchanged; use the project’s query structure reference and its guidance on differences from SQL.

Inline DQL cannot gather multiple pages
Inline DQL is for a single evaluated value. It does not support query types and data commands for building a collection. Move a multi-note table, list, or task view to a regular DQL block; do not try to squeeze a page query into inline DQL.

A metadata field that collides with a query keyword may need to be accessed through the row object, for example row.from or row.where. For a field name containing spaces, the FAQ documents access using bracket notation, such as row["Field With Space In It"], and notes that field names are normalized to lowercase hyphenated names. See the Dataview FAQ and query reference for the relevant field-access guidance.
Broad queries can burden a large vault
The Dataview query-structure documentation warns that some queries may take a long time or, in extreme cases, freeze Obsidian. It does not publish a safe page-count threshold or performance guarantee. Scope the source narrowly—by folder, tag, or link—and apply LIMIT when you only need a bounded result set.

Keep DQL and DataviewJS in the correct block
A snippet that calls dv is JavaScript, not DQL. Put it in a dataviewjs block rather than a dataview block. For example, this JavaScript-style view filters active project notes and builds a table:
```dataviewjs
const pages = dv.pages('"Projects"')
.where(p => p.status === "active")
.sort(p => p.file.name, "asc");
dv.table(["Project", "Language"], pages.map(p => [p.file.link, p.language]));
```
Dataview’s documentation says JavaScript queries have file-system access. Treat copied DataviewJS as executable code: understand what it does and inspect its source before running it. See the Dataview query-mode documentation.

A practical rule for choosing DQL or DataviewJS
- Use DQL when it clearly expresses the table, list, task view, filtering, sorting, or grouping you need.
- Use inline DQL when you need one value in a note, not a collection of pages.
- Consider DataviewJS only when the transformation genuinely calls for JavaScript and you are comfortable reviewing executable code.
- Keep names and values consistent in your metadata so queries remain understandable and maintainable.
