There is no single price to upgrade Dataverse for Teams. The cost depends on which Power Platform services your solution uses, who needs access, what licenses they already have, and the available purchase options for your organization. Dataverse for Teams has a 2 GB relational database limit per environment and does not offer a capacity add-on; if you need more capacity, use the relevant full Dataverse licensing route or plan an upgrade.
What does a Dataverse for Teams upgrade cost?
Microsoft does not publish one universal upgrade price. An upgrade can require standalone Power Platform licenses for users of each service, and the right combination depends on your apps, flows, bots, connectors, existing entitlements, capacity needs, region, and purchasing channel. Microsoft describes licensing routes that include standalone subscriptions, qualifying use rights included with other products, capacity add-ons, and eligible pay-as-you-go meters linked to Azure. Do not assume a Microsoft 365 subscription that permits a Teams scenario automatically licenses full Dataverse use. Microsoft says users need the standalone Power Platform license for each service they use after upgrading. Power Apps Premium and Power Automate Premium provide premium capabilities to their licensed users, with product-specific capacity entitlements; which products or meters apply depends on the workload.

Build an estimate from the actual workload
- Count users by service. Identify who will use each app, flow, and bot, including whether their access needs differ.
- Identify premium requirements. Check connectors and other premium features used by each workload; premium connector access has additional licensing requirements.
- List existing entitlements. Record the Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform licenses users already hold.
- Estimate capacity. Consider database, file, and log usage rather than relying on row count alone.
- Compare billing routes. Ask whether standalone licenses, add-ons, or eligible Azure-linked pay-as-you-go meters fit the scenario.
- Confirm the quote. Ask a Microsoft representative or licensing partner to verify the current license guide, regional pricing, and channel availability.
Can you add storage to Dataverse for Teams?
No. Microsoft says additional capacity cannot be purchased for a Dataverse for Teams environment. Each environment is linked one-to-one with a Teams team and has a 2 GB relational database limit. Microsoft describes that limit as supporting up to approximately one million records under typical usage; it is not a guaranteed row count. Record size, schema, files, images, and logs affect actual capacity. Microsoft’s comparison includes files, images, and logs in the stated 2 GB limit.
When the environment reaches its limit, existing solutions can continue to run and grow, but users are restricted from creating or installing new apps, bots, flows, or tables there. Microsoft describes existing solutions as continuing to work, with create, read, update, and delete operations allowed, although some options become unavailable. Tenant-level capacity constraints can also prevent new solutions or environments from being created.

Microsoft’s governance guidance says makers and tenant admins can receive notifications as capacity approaches 80 percent. Monitor environment usage and tenant capacity in the Power Platform admin center rather than waiting for the environment to hit its limit. What changes when you move to full Dataverse?
Full Dataverse is not just a larger storage allowance. Microsoft identifies broader support for data types and controls, enterprise security and administration, and standalone premium apps, bots, and automations. It can also support requirements such as auditing, richer access control, reporting, offline use, and enterprise application lifecycle management. Dataverse for Teams has limitations including unsupported or restricted data types such as Currency, Date Only, and Customer; validate the current feature documentation against your design before choosing an environment.

Can you use Dataverse for Teams outside Microsoft Teams?
Dataverse for Teams is designed for solutions used in Teams. Microsoft says using the environment outside Teams requires an upgrade to full Dataverse, with the appropriate standalone licensing for users. If your app must run independently of the Teams client, make that a design and licensing requirement before building.

What should you check before building?
- Usage location: Will every app, bot, and automation stay in Teams, or must any work outside it?
- Capacity: Estimate database, file, image, and log requirements and compare them with the 2 GB environment limit.
- Compatibility: Verify required data types, controls, connectors, AI Builder features, desktop flows, and custom connectors.
- Security and administration: Decide whether Teams-based membership is enough or whether you need auditing, field-level or hierarchical security, sharing controls, or enterprise ALM.
- Licenses and billing: Inventory users and their existing subscriptions, then confirm premium requirements, add-on eligibility, and pay-as-you-go prerequisites.
- Team lifecycle: A Dataverse for Teams environment is deleted if its associated Team is deleted. Align Team ownership, retention, and recovery policies with the data’s importance.
- Migration assumptions: Microsoft’s FAQ says geo migration is not supported for these environments. It also says packaging and exporting a Dataverse for Teams solution for import elsewhere is not available yet and is on the roadmap; verify current status rather than relying on it as a fallback.
What happens to Copilot Studio bots during an upgrade?
If the environment contains Copilot Studio bots, schedule the upgrade window and tell users what to expect. Microsoft says bot authors cannot create or edit bots while the environment is upgrading, and conversations might be affected. After a successful upgrade, Microsoft says the bot continues to work without further action.

Include bot billing in the cost estimate as well: after upgrade, qualified Copilot Studio sessions are treated as billable even when they do not use certain premium functionality, such as premium connectors, non-Teams channels, or Azure Framework extensibility. Access to the Copilot Studio web app requires a standalone subscription or individual trial license. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance, last updated December 18, 2025, also describes a collaboration limitation if the Teams Owner security group was removed; recheck the current guidance if adding bot authors as Teams owners is important to your deployment.
