Data center jobs span construction and engineering, commissioning, facility operations, IT and networking, field service, and commercial work—not just server support. The best place to look depends on whether you want a project-based construction role or a long-term operations job, and whether you are comparing current listings or established employment hubs. Here is how the main job families, U.S. hotspots, and available pay evidence fit together.
What kinds of data center jobs are available?
Data centers combine buildings, power and cooling systems, network infrastructure, and round-the-clock operations. Employers hire across the facility lifecycle, from site development and construction to commissioning and ongoing maintenance. Job titles and qualifications vary, so use the duties in each listing—not the title alone—to judge fit.

Design and engineering
Engineering roles can cover electrical, mechanical, civil and structural, fire protection, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing), controls and automation, and network infrastructure. These jobs may support facility design, equipment selection, infrastructure planning, or ongoing technical improvements.
Construction and project delivery
Build-phase work includes construction and project managers, superintendents, planners and schedulers, safety professionals, and skilled trades. Examples include electricians, plumbers and pipefitters, operating engineers, concrete specialists, ironworkers, and truck drivers. These roles are tied to construction activity and project schedules; they are not the same as permanent jobs at an operating facility.

Commissioning and testing
Commissioning teams test and validate electrical and mechanical systems as a project moves toward operation. Search for titles such as commissioning engineer or commissioning specialist, as well as electrical or mechanical commissioning roles.
Facility operations, installation and field service
Operating facilities need staff to support critical systems and keep equipment running. Relevant titles include facility technician, critical facilities technician, installation and maintenance technician, and field service technician. Some jobs focus on a particular equipment type; others involve broader facility operations. Read listings for shift patterns, on-call duties, travel, and the systems you would be responsible for.
IT and network infrastructure
Data center employers also hire network engineers and architects, cloud and systems professionals, and IT infrastructure, operations, and support staff. These roles can overlap with facility work, but a job focused on network or systems support is not interchangeable with one maintaining power, cooling, or building controls.

Commercial roles include strategic sales, mission-critical equipment sales, and site selection. Their titles and requirements are less standardized than those in many technical job families, so search by the product, customer, or development function as well as by “data center.”

Where are data center jobs concentrated?
There is no single ranking that answers both “where are the jobs?” and “where are employers hiring now?” Historical employment concentration and current job listings measure different things.
Established employment centers
The U.S. Census Bureau’s January 2025 analysis, based on employment data through 2023, reports that California accounted for 17% and Texas for 10% of U.S. data center employment. California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Georgia together accounted for more than 40%. Within California, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Santa Clara counties represented 60% of the state’s data center employment; in Texas, Travis, Bexar, Collin, and Dallas counties represented nearly 75%. These are employment shares, not counts of current vacancies. See the Census Bureau analysis.
Markets appearing in a 2026 hiring roundup
A January 2026 Data Center Frontier/Pkaza roundup listed hiring across a broader set of markets, including Northern Virginia (Ashburn and Richmond), Texas (Dallas, Austin, Abilene, and West Texas), the Southeast (Atlanta, Charlotte, and Augusta), Midwest locations (New Albany, Cedar Rapids, and Chicago), Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, and Western markets including Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City, and California. It is a recruiter-industry snapshot, not a complete vacancy inventory, and individual listings may have expired. Check the January 2026 roundup for its listed opportunities.

What does the available pay evidence show?
Compensation depends on job family, experience, location, shift and on-call expectations, and whether a figure is a job-posting range or a salary-guide benchmark. Do not treat a sector-wide comparison or a national benchmark as an offer for a particular role.

Pay in job postings
Indeed Hiring Lab’s 2026 U.S. posting analysis found that half of data center postings were in IT infrastructure, operations and support, and installation and maintenance. It also found median expected hourly compensation for data-center installation and maintenance postings was 42% higher than in comparable non-data-center postings, while median advertised annual compensation was 12% higher. These are comparisons between postings, not guaranteed wages or take-home pay. See Indeed Hiring Lab’s analysis.
A role-specific salary-guide example
Kelly Digital Infrastructure’s 2026 guide covers more than 60 roles across nine major markets and shows city-specific differences. Its displayed national benchmark for a Power Commissioning Engineer is $102,000 low, $120,000 median, and $199,000 high. This is a guide benchmark, not a universal salary range or promise of what an employer will pay. Consult the 2026 Kelly Digital Infrastructure Salary Guide and compare it with the range in the actual listing.

- Search by job family and alternate title. Try “data center technician,” “critical facilities technician,” “commissioning engineer,” “electrical project manager,” “mechanical project manager,” “controls” or “BAS” (building automation systems), “network infrastructure,” and “field service.” Confirm the responsibilities and qualifications in each listing.
- Look beyond one city or one roundup. Search employer career pages and specialist recruiter listings for the locations you can realistically work in. Roundups can help identify markets and role names, but they do not establish that a job is still open.
- Separate project work from ongoing operations. Check whether a position is attached to a construction project, commissioning phase, or operating facility. Project duration and work location may differ substantially from a permanent facility role.
- Compare the conditions, not just the headline pay. Review disclosed compensation alongside location, experience level, shifts, on-call duties, travel, and site location. A posted median or guide figure is not an individual offer.
- Match transferable experience to the requirements. Backgrounds in utilities, telecom, construction, skilled trades, engineering, networking, and operations may be relevant. Employers set their own prerequisites; the available evidence does not establish one universal entry requirement or a credential that guarantees hiring.
How big is the data center job market?
The measures below describe different kinds of activity and should not be combined into a single hiring count.
| Measure | What it says | What it does not say |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-business employment | The Census Bureau reports data center employment grew from 306,000 in 2016 to 501,000 in 2023, an increase of more than 60% over that period. | It is historical employment, not the number of vacancies now. |
| Construction spending | AGC, citing Census Bureau data, reported a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $59.3 billion in data center construction spending in May 2026, up 23% year over year. | Spending is not a count of workers or job openings. |
| Recruiter job orders | The Planet Group reported 80% year-over-year growth in data-center-related job orders in the first half of 2026. | This is the company’s internal job-order activity, not a measure of the entire U.S. market. |
| Advertised openings | Recruiter roundups and job-posting analyses show examples of roles and markets at a particular time. | They are snapshots, not a complete or necessarily current inventory of all vacancies. |
The construction-spending figure is reported by AGC; the job-order figure is from The Planet Group. Both are useful context, but neither can tell a job seeker how many suitable openings are available in a specific city today.
