A data center should treat drone security as part of its broader physical-security and continuity plan—not as a single sensor purchase or an invitation to disable aircraft. Start with a site-specific risk assessment, combine deterrence, detection, asset protection, and trained response, and keep any active countermeasure behind a separate legal and operational review. “UAS” means unmanned aircraft system, the term used in federal guidance.
Start with the facility’s exposure and consequences
There is no universal drone-defense layout or buffer distance for data centers in the cited guidance. The right measures depend on what is exposed, how an incident could affect operations, and what the site can safely and legally do. CISA and the Interagency Security Committee’s November 2020 guide treats protective measures as options to select through facility risk and vulnerability assessment, not a one-size-fits-all blueprint.

- Airspace and nearby drone activity, adjacent properties, public access, and likely lines of sight to sensitive operations.
- Roof access, courtyards, exposed equipment, loading and delivery areas, and locations where a dropped item could create a safety or continuity concern.
- How unauthorized observation, a physical hazard, or disruption could affect staff, infrastructure, service continuity, and recovery.
- Existing cameras, security staffing, communications, power and network dependencies, and the team responsible for receiving and acting on alerts.
CISA’s facility-assessment and exercise resources can help operators organize this work. Its “Be Air Aware” program also addresses UAS risks and critical-infrastructure options. These resources offer planning frameworks; they do not establish a data-center-specific threat score or a required setback.

Layer measures around the risk, not around a single sensor
A useful plan connects measures that reduce opportunity, improve awareness, protect exposed assets, and support a safe response. CISA’s UAS guide gives examples across deterrence, detection, protection, and response; its April 18, 2024 Vehicle Incident Prevention and Mitigation Security Guide discusses layered security more generally. The latter is physical-security guidance, not evidence of drone-system performance.
| Layer | What it contributes | Site decisions |
|---|---|---|
| Deter and reduce exposure | Clear rules, workforce awareness, reporting channels, signs or public communications, and measures that limit unnecessary observation of sensitive assets. | Decide what visitors and staff should report, where sensitive work or equipment can be less exposed, and how privacy measures fit local and operational requirements. |
| Detect and verify | Sensor alerts and visual observation that give staff information to assess; neither establishes intent by itself. | Choose coverage and alert-handling arrangements for actual site conditions, and assign a human verification step. |
| Protect assets and continuity | Concealment, relocation, or physical barriers may reduce exposure or protect selected areas. | Assess which assets matter most and whether a measure fits fire safety, access, airflow, structural loading, maintenance, and other facility systems. |
| Respond and recover | Defined escalation, coordination, evidence handling, recovery authority, and rehearsed roles. | Set who receives an alert, who makes operational decisions, whom to contact, and how service continuity and recovery are managed. |
Choose detection for the site and its operating conditions
The FAA’s June 23, 2025 page, “UAS Detection, Mitigation, and Response on Airports,” describes radar, radio-frequency (RF), electro-optic, and acoustic detection technologies, which may be used alone or in combination. That airport-focused page is useful for the agency’s definitions and safety position; airport procedures should not automatically be transferred to a data center. The cited material does not establish comparative performance, detection range, or a best modality for data centers.

| Detection option | What the guidance establishes | Questions for a site assessment or procurement |
|---|---|---|
| Radar | Identified by FAA as a detection technology. | What coverage is demonstrated for this site, and how do buildings, roads, environmental conditions, and alert thresholds affect operations? |
| Radio-frequency (RF) | Identified by FAA as a detection technology. | How does the system handle local interference, false alarms, coverage gaps, and the site’s spectrum environment? |
| Electro-optic | Identified by FAA as a detection technology. | What can operators verify under the site’s lighting, weather, obstruction, privacy, and data-retention conditions? |
| Acoustic | Identified by FAA as a detection technology. | How do environmental conditions and surrounding activity affect usable coverage and alert review? |
These are procurement questions, not claims that a modality will work equally well at every facility. Evaluate proposed systems against coverage, environmental fit, false-alarm handling, human review, integration with existing cameras and the security operations center, privacy and data handling, power and network needs, maintenance, interoperability, vendor support, and lifecycle cost. The cited official material provides no tested comparative performance figures for these systems at data centers.
Use cameras as visual support, not as a substitute for detection
An outdoor security camera system may help staff observe an area or verify an alert, but ordinary camera coverage is not equivalent to a dedicated UAS detection system. Plan camera placement and operator review around lighting, weather, obstructions, privacy, and data retention. CISA’s protective-measure examples include visual detection; that does not make every camera a drone detector.

Reduce observation opportunities and protect exposed assets
Give workers, contractors, and visitors a straightforward way to report a drone or a suspicious item, and make clear who receives the report. CISA lists staff and visitor awareness and reporting, signs and public communications, concealment, privacy measures, and moving important assets away from exposed areas as possible options. Select measures in light of site operations, safety, privacy, and local constraints.
For roofs, courtyards, outdoor equipment, or visible information, assess whether concealment, relocation, netting, or grillage would reduce a meaningful risk. These measures are not automatic specifications. Facility engineers should review any proposed barrier or relocation for fire safety, maintenance access, airflow, structural loading, and interactions with other security or building systems.

Make alerts lead to a safe, practiced response
An alert is an observation to assess, not a conclusion about a pilot’s intent or the level of danger. The FAA states: “Detection systems do not have the ability to determine intent or the level of threat posed by UAS.” A human-led decision process should verify what is known, assess immediate safety and operational impacts, and choose an authorized response.

- Receive: Identify who monitors sensor and camera alerts and who is the backup when the primary operator is unavailable.
- Verify: Define how staff check an alert using available observations, without treating any single sensor as conclusive.
- Escalate: Set who makes the site’s operational decisions, how security, facilities, and continuity teams are notified, and when law enforcement or relevant public agencies are contacted.
- Protect: Establish how staff, sensitive areas, service continuity, and potentially relevant records are handled during an incident.
- Recover: Specify who authorizes recovery, preserves evidence, documents decisions, and reviews lessons after the event.
Exercise scenarios such as unauthorized observation, a drone near a roof, a suspected dropped item, and a disruption to operations. CISA recommends planning and exercising response, recovery, and forensics. FAA’s airport material emphasizes coordination and managing second-order effects in airport environments; for a data center, adapt the general coordination lesson to the site rather than copying airport-specific procedures.
Keep active mitigation separate from ordinary facility security
Detection identifies or observes; mitigation attempts to disrupt, disable, destroy, take control of, or redirect a UAS. Those are materially different actions. Do not treat jammers, takeover systems, projectiles, nets fired at aircraft, or other active countermeasures as ordinary products a private facility can deploy on its own.
The FAA’s June 2025 guidance says it does not support C-UAS use by entities other than federal departments with explicit statutory authority and warns of aviation and navigation risks. The Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy’s UAS index, updated August 10, 2026, lists a July 2026 Federal Register item concerning state and local law-enforcement authority. That listing alone does not establish the item’s scope or what authority, if any, applies to a private data-center operator. Authority is jurisdiction- and date-sensitive; obtain review from qualified counsel and coordinate with relevant authorities before considering any active response.
FAA announced a proposed process on May 6, 2026 for operators of certain critical-infrastructure sites to petition for restrictions. A proposal is not an approved site restriction, and it does not establish that a particular data center qualifies. Confirm current rulemaking status and site eligibility with the FAA before relying on that process.
