Former infrastructure engineer Daniel Rhyne was sentenced to 32 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to extortion involving a threat to damage a protected computer and intentional damage to a protected computer. A criminal complaint said his planned password changes were designed to affect 3,284 workstations and 254 servers—but those figures describe intended impact, not a finding that every listed device became inaccessible.
What sentence did Daniel Rhyne receive?
U.S. District Judge Michael A. Shipp imposed a 32-month prison sentence on September 28, 2026. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey announced it on October 5. Rhyne, a former core infrastructure engineer at an industrial company headquartered in New Jersey, pleaded guilty to two offenses: extortion in relation to a threat to damage a protected computer, and intentional damage to a protected computer. The company is identified in the case materials only as “Victim-1.” The sentencing announcement confirms the outcome and offenses.

What did the planned lockout involve?
The FBI criminal complaint describes scheduled tasks intended to disrupt access to the company’s systems and data. It lists these planned effects:
- Delete 13 domain administrator accounts.
- Change passwords for 301 domain user accounts.
- Change two local administrator passwords in a way intended to affect 254 servers.
- Change two additional local administrator passwords in a way intended to affect 3,284 workstations.
- Shut down multiple servers and workstations over several days.
The complaint characterized the tasks as “collectively designed and intended to deny Victim-1 access to its systems and data.” The 254-server and 3,284-workstation figures are the complaint’s counts of planned reach for password changes. They do not establish that every server or workstation was actually locked out, permanently damaged, or otherwise rendered inaccessible. The official sentencing announcement does not give a final count of affected systems or a company loss total.

What ransom did he demand?
According to the complaint, employees received an email titled “Your Network Has Been Penetrated” on November 25, 2023. It demanded 20 bitcoin, which the complaint valued at approximately $750,000 on that date, and threatened to shut down 40 random servers per day for 10 days unless payment was made by December 2. That dollar figure is the contemporaneous valuation reported for November 25, 2023, not a current bitcoin value. The FBI complaint sets out the demand and alleged planned actions.
How investigators linked the activity to Rhyne
The complaint’s investigative account describes remote desktop access through a hidden virtual machine using a company administrator account. Investigators reported forensic links between that machine, Rhyne’s company-issued laptop and account, and his physical access to the company site; they also cited matching password use. These are details from the complaint, which presented allegations supported by probable cause. The later plea and sentencing announcements establish his guilty pleas and sentence, but do not reproduce the full forensic record.

Case timeline and charges
- November 8–25, 2023: The period charged for intentional damage; investigators described malicious network activity and scheduled tasks during this period.
- November 25, 2023: Administrators began receiving password-reset notifications at about 4 p.m. EST. The complaint says the extortion email followed about 44 minutes later.
- August 8, 2024: The complaint was sworn.
- August 27, 2024: Rhyne was arrested in Missouri, according to the Justice Department’s initial announcement.
- April 1, 2026: Rhyne pleaded guilty before Judge Shipp, according to the following day’s Justice Department announcement.
- September 28, 2026: Judge Shipp imposed the 32-month sentence.
- October 5, 2026: The District of New Jersey announced the sentence.
The initial complaint included three counts, including wire fraud. The later plea announcement says Rhyne pleaded guilty to an information charging two counts: extortion in relation to a threat to damage a protected computer and intentional damage to a protected computer. He did not plead guilty to wire fraud in the cited plea announcement. That announcement reported statutory maximums of five years for the extortion offense and ten years for intentional damage; these are maximum penalties, not the sentence imposed. The plea announcement describes the charges and procedural stage.

The case materials describe account deletions, password changes, system shutdowns, and an extortion demand. They do not describe a conventional encrypted-file ransomware attack. The distinction matters: the headline device count comes from the complaint’s stated intended reach of particular password changes, rather than a verified tally of computers encrypted or permanently damaged.
