Expo developers looking for background audio without a commercial-license gate may want to examine daily-react-native-player, an audio package Mark Melton says he built for his Daily Bible – Offline & Audio app. It is described as a queue-based player for iOS and Android that can keep audio playing with the screen locked, expose remote controls, and play audio URLs—including speech created by a separate text-to-speech pipeline. The package does not generate speech itself.
These capabilities and compatibility details are Melton’s claims, not an independent test. His article, published August 19, 2026, describes the project as MIT-licensed and commercially usable without a license gate; the license file was not independently reviewed, so confirm the terms in the repository before relying on them for a commercial app.

What problem is the package meant to solve?
Melton says his Bible app needed audio playback that could continue after the screen locks, manage a queue, handle speech arriving incrementally, and respond to lock-screen and headset controls. He also wanted optional ambient audio to play alongside speech in an Expo app.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11His package, daily-react-native-player, is presented as the playback layer for that use case. The app or an upstream service must create the audio; the package consumes audio URLs. As Melton puts it, “The player does not run the model. It consumes URLs.” That distinction matters if you need text-to-speech: this is not a TTS engine.

What features does the author describe?
Queues and remote controls
The package is described as supporting audio URLs and mutable queues, so an app can change queue contents while playback continues. Lock-screen, notification, Control Center, and Bluetooth remote actions are sent to JavaScript. The app decides what an action such as “Next” means, which could be the next track or the next verse in a spoken reading.

Incremental speech and silence
For speech supplied in pieces, the author describes adding audio URLs to a queue rather than asking the player to synthesize speech. He also describes silence as a queue item: SilenceMediaSource on Android and cached PCM WAV on iOS. The stated aim is to avoid timer drift when the operating system is busy; this is a design rationale, not a measured comparison.

Melton says a second player is created lazily for optional ambient sound. In his description, it does not request audio focus or own Now Playing, leaving those responsibilities to the primary player. He identifies Media3 on Android and AVFoundation on iOS as the native playback engines.

The article lists HLS video-on-demand audio and WAV, MP3, and M4A support, as well as pitch-preserving playback-rate changes. These are feature claims; the reviewed material does not establish behavior across every device, operating-system version, or app lifecycle state.
How do you add it to an Expo project?
The author gives this installation command:
npx expo install daily-react-native-player
He says the Expo config should include the plugin name daily-react-native-player. During prebuild, the config plugin is described as adding iOS background-audio mode and Android’s mediaPlayback foreground service. Confirm the current README and package metadata for the exact setup and configuration syntax before integrating it; the sources reviewed here do not include those files.

What platforms and versions are claimed?
Melton’s article states a minimum of Expo SDK 57+ and React Native 0.86+, with the New Architecture required. It describes support for iOS and Android, with no web player. These are version-sensitive requirements, not independently verified compatibility guarantees. Check the current package manifest, release notes, and README against your app’s Expo SDK, React Native version, architecture, and target platforms before adopting it.
What should you verify before shipping?
- License: The author describes the project as MIT-licensed and commercially usable without a license gate. Review the repository’s actual license text and any applicable notices for your use case; the license file was not independently reviewed here.
- Compatibility: Confirm the current minimum versions and New Architecture requirement against the package’s live documentation.
- Lifecycle behavior: The article says playback can continue after app kill “if that is the policy.” Do not interpret that as a guarantee that iOS or Android will keep an app running after a user force-quits it.
- Device and build coverage: The reviewed sources do not establish that every described behavior works on every OS version, device vendor, build configuration, or lifecycle transition.
- Maintenance and security: The repository’s security policy identifies version 0.1.x as supported and asks users to report vulnerabilities through private GitHub advisories or the maintainer contact in package metadata. It says there is no bug bounty. Check the live policy for current support details: repository security policy.
The available material does not verify the current published package version, release activity, issue status, installation statistics, or license file. Melton characterizes the work as “production hardening,” but that description is not an independent assessment of production readiness.

Is it a better choice than an existing player?
The author frames the project as an alternative to an existing React Native track-player option whose commercial license, he says, did not fit his project. The available evidence does not support a feature-by-feature comparison or a claim that either option is objectively better. For your app, compare the current license terms, Expo prebuild integration, required SDK and architecture, background behavior, supported remote controls, queue changes, incremental speech and silence handling, audio formats, platform coverage, and maintenance policy.
