To monitor a production retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) application, trace each request through retrieval and generation, capture usage and cost for both model calls and embeddings, and review those signals alongside latency, errors and answer quality. Use dashboards and alerts to spot changes, then inspect traces to find their cause. Treat dashboard cost figures as operational estimates—not as a substitute for provider billing.
How do I monitor a RAG application in production?
Instrument the full request path, not just the final answer. A useful trace connects a user request with the operations that produced its response, so a slow, expensive or poor result can be investigated in context. LangChain describes end-to-end execution traces and visibility into RAG pipelines in its LangSmith product overview; Langfuse supports trace capture through SDKs, framework integrations, OpenTelemetry or an LLM gateway in its observability documentation.

Start with the operations in your deployed pipeline: request handling, retrieval, and each generation or embedding call. Capture enough context to identify the operation and model and to connect the answer to the steps that contributed to it. The exact fields depend on your instrumentation libraries and privacy policy; avoid logging sensitive user or retrieved content unless you have a clear need and appropriate controls.

Use traces to investigate what happened within a request, and aggregate performance signals to see whether the system is changing across requests. Monitor latency and errors alongside usage and cost. Pair these with evaluation and feedback signals: LangSmith describes cost breakdowns, latency, errors, feedback scores and evaluation, while Langfuse documents workflows for comparing latency, cost and evaluation metrics across prompt versions. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence that a tool improves answer quality.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dashboards and alerts help surface shifts in aggregate metrics. When a signal changes, use an individual trace to inspect the relevant operations rather than assuming the final generation call is the cause.
What should I log in a RAG pipeline?
Capture the information needed to explain performance, cost and quality without collecting more user data than the team needs. At minimum, make each operation identifiable and connect it to its parent request. A practical instrumentation checklist is:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Request and operation context: a trace or request identifier, operation type, timestamp and the model or component involved.
- Usage: provider-returned usage for generation and embedding calls, including the usage units your provider reports.
- Cost: provider-reported cost when available, or enough usage and model information to calculate an estimate.
- Useful aggregation dimensions: model, application or feature, and—where appropriate—user or tenant and tags. Apply privacy and access controls to any user-linked data.
- Operational and quality signals: latency, errors, evaluation results and user feedback where available.
Langfuse documents filtering metrics by application type, user or tags, as well as dashboards and threshold alerts in its metrics documentation. Which dimensions are useful depends on your product and instrumentation; choose them to answer concrete questions, such as which feature or model is driving a cost increase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do I track LLM costs per request?
Capture cost and usage for both generation and embedding operations. Cost attribution can be based on values your instrumentation sends or on a calculation from recorded usage and a configured model definition. Langfuse documents both approaches: ingested usage and cost take priority when both are present, while inferred costs depend on the model definition and recorded usage. Its cost tracking documentation covers model definitions, including custom definitions.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For inferred costs to be meaningful, verify that the recorded model ID, usage units, price definition and applicable pricing tier match the operation. A mismatch can make an estimate misleading even when the trace itself is complete. Keep the model and pricing configuration current, and distinguish provider-reported values from calculated estimates in dashboards and reports.
Once operations carry consistent dimensions, aggregate cost by request, model, application, feature or other relevant grouping. Use those views to find expensive routes or changes, and configure alerts for thresholds that matter to your service. Aggregate results identify where to investigate; the underlying traces help explain which operations contributed.

Are LLM observability dashboard costs accurate?
They can be useful estimates, but they are not necessarily the final amount on a provider invoice. AWS states that Langfuse dashboard cost data for its Bedrock AgentCore workflow is provided for estimation and that actual charges should be checked against official billing statements in its Amazon Bedrock AgentCore observability article.
Reconcile observability totals with provider billing for the same provider, model, workload and time period. Differences can arise when price definitions, usage categories, retries or provider billing adjustments are handled differently. Use trace-level estimates to understand and manage application behavior; use the provider’s billing records as the accounting reference.

How do I compare LLM observability tools?
Compare capabilities against your actual pipeline and operational requirements. Product documentation can establish that a feature is offered; it does not establish which platform performs best for every workload.
| Decision area | Questions to test | Documented example |
|---|---|---|
| Trace visibility | Can you inspect the complete RAG path and its operations? | LangChain describes end-to-end traces and RAG pipeline visibility in its LangSmith product overview. |
| Usage and cost | Can you capture usage and cost, or configure model prices to infer cost? | Langfuse documents usage and cost capture or inference and custom model definitions in its cost tracking documentation. |
| Evaluation | Can production traces feed evaluation and prompt iteration? | Langfuse describes evaluation workflows in its evaluation documentation; LangChain describes evaluation alongside observability in its product overview. |
| Integration | Does trace capture fit your existing SDK and OpenTelemetry workflows? | Langfuse describes OpenTelemetry-based capture in its observability documentation; LangChain describes OpenTelemetry integration in its product overview. |
| Deployment and data handling | Can the available deployment approach meet your data and operational requirements? | LangChain’s reviewed product overview describes managed, bring-your-own-cloud and self-hosted options. Confirm current terms and configuration directly. |
| Commercial model | How do usage, retention and scale affect the cost for your workload? | LangChain provides a pricing page; check its current plans and terms when evaluating. |
For a meaningful comparison, run the same representative traces and evaluation set through the candidates. Check export and retention behavior, and account for the operational effort and storage cost of collecting telemetry. A workload-specific trial is more informative than a feature checklist alone.
