Cyberpunk 2 is still in preproduction, and its design is intentionally unsettled. CD PROJEKT RED says the sequel—formerly known as Project Orion—has moved beyond conceptual work while its Boston-led team reassesses Cyberpunk 2077, expands ideas with more potential, and drops elements that did not justify further investment. Gabe Amatangelo and Igor Sarzyński lead that process, supported by veterans of Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty. No release date, platform list, plot, or finalized feature set has been announced.
What Cyberpunk 2’s development status means
CD PROJEKT announced on 28 May 2025 that the project had completed its conceptual phase and entered preproduction. The company’s 2025 annual report records Cyberpunk 2 as still in development on 31 December 2025. That places the game beyond a purely exploratory concept, but it does not mean production is close to launch or that its systems are locked.

Preproduction is where a studio turns a broad direction into a workable game plan: testing designs, establishing pipelines, proving technical approaches and deciding which ambitions fit the available schedule and resources. The team’s own descriptions make clear that those decisions are still being made.
How Project Orion became Cyberpunk 2
Project Orion was the original working name for the sequel. CD PROJEKT now publicly refers to it as Cyberpunk 2, but the name change is not a gameplay reveal. The important change is organizational and creative: the project is being shaped by a larger group rather than treated as one director’s fixed blueprint.

Creative Director Igor Sarzyński says the team is evaluating the previous game, discussing what worked, identifying ideas that had unrealized potential and deciding which elements “didn’t pan out” or no longer deserve the same investment. That is a deliberate filter, not a promise that every criticism of Cyberpunk 2077 will be addressed in a particular way.
Game Director Gabe Amatangelo describes a similarly iterative approach. The team writes down a vision, tests it, asks for feedback, challenges its assumptions and keeps refining the result until it feels right. He characterizes that willingness to keep pushing as part of CD PROJEKT RED’s culture: “We’re always wanting to do more.”

Who is directing Cyberpunk 2?
Gabe Amatangelo — Vice President and Game Director
Amatangelo is responsible for game direction and the overall execution of the sequel. He previously led Cyberpunk 2077’s major post-launch work, including Phantom Liberty, giving him direct experience with the systems, production problems and player expectations the sequel team is now examining.

Igor Sarzyński — Creative Director
Sarzyński handles narrative, world-building and lore. His comments provide the clearest explanation of how the sequel is deciding what to retain, extend or remove from the earlier game’s foundation.

A Boston-led team with returning veterans
The North American organization includes Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty veterans such as Paweł Sasko, alongside other experienced developers. CD PROJEKT RED’s October 2026 feature says more than 180 developers were working on Cyberpunk 2. That is the company’s named figure, not an independently audited headcount, and it should be read as a snapshot of staffing rather than a guarantee of the final team size.
Is Cyberpunk 2 bigger than Cyberpunk 2077?
The confirmed evidence supports a larger or at least substantially expanded development organization, but it does not establish that the finished game will be larger in map size, story length or feature count.

A headcount can indicate production capacity, but it cannot by itself predict quality, scope or launch timing. The team is also balancing ambition against an agile backlog that ranks priorities against available time and resources.

CD PROJEKT has not published a list of specific mechanics being replaced. Instead, its statements describe a decision framework:
- Keep what delivered value: Ideas that worked well can form the sequel’s foundation.
- Extend unrealized potential: Systems or concepts that showed promise may be pushed further rather than copied unchanged.
- Remove weak investments: Elements that failed to deliver or no longer seem valuable may not return.
- Prioritize deliberately: An agile backlog helps the team rank work against time, staffing and technical resources.
- Iterate with feedback: The directors describe repeated testing and reassessment instead of locking the first version of the vision.
This process explains why it is too early to claim that any particular character, location, quest structure, combat system or open-world feature is confirmed. The official material establishes how decisions are made, not the final answers to those decisions.
Will Cyberpunk 2 fix Cyberpunk 2077’s problems?
That remains an open design question. The team is explicitly reviewing the previous game, so lessons from Cyberpunk 2077 are part of the sequel’s development. However, CD PROJEKT has not promised a defined list of fixes, a technical target, or a feature-by-feature response to criticism. Statements about reassessment should not be converted into guarantees about performance, artificial intelligence, driving, role-playing depth or any other unannounced system.
When will Cyberpunk 2 release?
No release date has been announced in the authoritative material available for the project. CD PROJEKT has also not confirmed final platforms, a launch window, a plot synopsis or a complete gameplay reveal. Leaks and predictions should therefore be treated as unconfirmed until the company publishes details.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a separate Netflix anime expansion of the Cyberpunk universe, not the game sequel. The official site lists it for Netflix on 20 October 2026, although availability and regional rights should be checked locally. Its release does not provide a launch date or gameplay information for Cyberpunk 2.
