The listed CVSS v4 base score is 6.3 (Medium), but the score is only one part of the risk assessment: the flaw concerns how the router decides which remote servers to trust. MikroTik says the complete fixes are RouterOS 7.24.3 (stable), 7.23.6 (long-term), or later; releases 7.24.2 and 7.23.4 did not fully fix this issue.
What CVE-2026-67278 does
The vulnerability is an improper cryptographic-signature verification flaw in MikroTik RouterOS. The advisory describes malformed RSA/PKCS#1 v1.5 signatures being accepted during X.509 certificate validation. MikroTik also describes the issue as allowing forged SSH host keys and server impersonation.

In the detailed TLS scenario, RouterOS has an e=3 root certificate in its trust store. An attacker who can control or redirect an outbound TLS connection from the router may use the root certificate’s public information—without possessing its private key—to forge a trusted intermediate certificate and issue certificates for arbitrary hostnames. If validation accepts the forged identity, the attacker may impersonate the server to the router. This is not an unconditional remote takeover: the attacker must be able to affect the relevant connection, and the router must make a trust decision over that path. Why a Medium score deserves context
The GitHub Advisory Database lists a CVSS v4 base score of 6.3, rated Medium. Its vector records a network attack vector, low attack complexity, present attack requirements, no privileges required, no user interaction, low confidentiality and integrity impacts to the vulnerable system, and no availability impact. Those metrics describe the advisory’s modeled base conditions; they do not quantify how much a particular router’s operations depend on remote-server trust.
#1 Best Overall
- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to deliver the full speed of your internet plan across a medium to large home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart devices.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- WIFI 7 SPEED FOR TODAY'S FASTEST INTERNET PLANS: Up to 6.5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. Keeps every device connected at the same time with MU-MIMO and OFDMA. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Certificates and SSH host keys help a client distinguish an intended server from an impostor. If an attacker meets the connection-control condition, a validation failure can undermine that identity check. The practical consequence depends on which outbound connections the router makes and what credentials, configuration tasks, or other operations rely on those connections. The cited sources do not quantify those consequences across installations, so neither a universal high-impact claim nor a blanket reassurance follows from the score alone.
The advisory also displayed an EPSS estimate of 0.18%, at the 8th percentile, attributed to FIRST’s Exploit Prediction Scoring System. EPSS estimates the probability of exploitation over the next 30 days; it is time-sensitive and is not a measure of impact or proof that exploitation has occurred. GitHub Advisory Database

- Coverage up to 2,000 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
- Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
- This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
- Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
- Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports
Check whether your RouterOS version is affected
MikroTik says RouterOS 6 is not affected by this CVE. The issue affects RouterOS 7, and the vendor’s corrected advisory says the earlier fixes in 7.24.2 and 7.23.4 were incomplete. Use the complete-fix release for your track, or a later release:

- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to keep up with a growing home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart home devices.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.

- WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.

What to do if your router is on an affected release
- Confirm the RouterOS version and track. If the device runs RouterOS 7 below 7.24.3 on the stable track or below 7.23.6 on the long-term track, install the appropriate complete-fix release or later. RouterOS 6 is outside this CVE’s affected scope, according to MikroTik.
- Restrict management access. Do not expose SSH or WebFig to untrusted networks. MikroTik says its default configuration blocks these management ports from the internet. If you have opened access, limit it to trusted IP addresses or use a strong VPN such as WireGuard; avoid exposing management ports publicly.
- Check router status and configuration after updating. Review the log for a “Flagged” status and follow MikroTik’s linked instructions if one appears. Also look for unfamiliar scripts, users, or settings. A device running an affected version is not, by itself, evidence that it was compromised.
MikroTik says most configurations are not at risk and that regular home-device users face no immediate risk, while recommending that all users upgrade. That assessment is not a guarantee for every setup: access paths, outbound connections, and configuration determine exposure. MikroTik security advisory

- Software and remediation: Confirm whether the device runs RouterOS 7 and whether it has reached the complete-fix release for its track.
- Attacker’s opportunity: Consider whether an attacker could control or redirect a relevant outbound connection. The described attack requires this condition; the flaw is not an unconditional remote compromise.
- Trust-dependent activity: Identify which TLS server connections or SSH host-key checks the router performs, and what credentials or operations depend on those identity checks.
- Management exposure: Separately review whether SSH or WebFig is reachable from untrusted networks and restrict access as needed.
- Post-update indicators: Check for MikroTik’s “Flagged” status and review configuration for unfamiliar changes without assuming compromise solely from the version history.
Disclosure and scope
CERT Polska’s advisory dated 5 September 2026 identifies Sławomir Rozbicki as the researcher behind the RouterOS vulnerability research and says he participated in coordinated disclosure. CERT identifies the flaw as CWE-347, improper verification of cryptographic signature. MikroTik’s broader September 2026 report lists six CVE entries, but those entries cover separate issues with their own impacts and affected-version ranges; they should not be conflated with CVE-2026-67278.
