Bare Metal Hosting: How It Works and When to Choose It

Bare metal hosting rents a physical server to one customer. Learn how it compares with VMs and dedicated hosting, what workloads suit it, and which costs and responsibilities to check.

Bare metal hosting gives one customer a physical server rather than a virtual machine sharing a host. It can be a good fit when a workload needs dedicated hardware, host-level control, or a specific server configuration—but the provider’s label does not tell you who manages the operating system, backups, or security. Those responsibilities and the delivery model vary by service.

What is bare metal hosting?

Bare metal hosting is the rental of a physical server dedicated to one customer. In IBM’s documented service, the server is single-tenant and provisioned without a hypervisor; that is one provider’s definition, not a guarantee about every product called “bare metal.” IBM notes that “bare metal server” and “dedicated server” are sometimes used interchangeably. IBM explains the terminology and model.

The key distinction is tenancy: the customer receives dedicated physical capacity and can have direct host-level control. A bare metal service may still support a customer-installed hypervisor and virtualized workloads. IBM, for example, documents bare metal for VMware-based private cloud deployments. IBM’s service documentation describes that provider-specific option.

How does bare metal hosting work?

The provider allocates a physical server, then may provision a selected or preset configuration and connect it to networking, storage, monitoring, and support services. Depending on the service, the customer installs or manages the operating system, hypervisor, database, and applications.

Cloud-like provisioning and billing are common features of some modern bare metal offers, but they are not universal. Traditional dedicated hosting may involve longer provisioning or fixed-term billing; the actual service contract and product details matter more than the label.

Bare metal vs. dedicated server, virtual machine, and managed platforms

Option What you get When it may fit
Bare metal hosting Dedicated physical server capacity, sometimes with cloud-style provisioning or billing. When you need dedicated hardware, host-level control, or a particular hardware profile.
Traditional dedicated hosting Dedicated physical hardware; provisioning, management, and billing may be less cloud-like. When stable capacity and the service’s price or included management suit the workload better than flexible billing or rapid provisioning.
Virtual machine (VM) A virtual server running on a host, typically with easier provisioning and resizing. When shared infrastructure is acceptable and faster, more elastic scaling is useful. IBM notes that VMs generally offer greater resource density and easier scaling.
PaaS or serverless A higher-level managed runtime or execution model rather than a server the customer manages directly. When the team wants to avoid managing operating systems and server capacity.

“Bare metal” and “dedicated server” can refer to overlapping offerings. Compare the actual tenancy, provisioning speed, billing terms, management boundary, hardware access, network and storage characteristics, and support commitments rather than assuming the names mean identical services. IBM’s overview of bare metal and other compute options discusses these distinctions.

When should I use bare metal hosting?

Consider it when the workload benefits from dedicated resources, control over the physical host, specialized hardware, or steadier I/O. IBM names high-performance computing (HPC), big data, high-performance databases, gaming, and finance workloads as examples. It also describes physical separation as relevant to some complex security or regulatory needs; a single-tenant server alone does not establish compliance or complete security.

Hardware specialization can matter as much as tenancy. Google Compute Engine documents bare metal machine families aimed at general-purpose, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and accelerator-optimized workloads, as well as configurations for very large SAP HANA workloads. These are Google product examples; check its current catalog for specifications and regional availability. Google’s bare metal machine documentation provides current product details.

Google’s Bare Metal Solution for Oracle illustrates another pattern: infrastructure designed for enterprise database workloads that need an environment close to existing deployments. Its documented features include root access, serial-console redirection, reset APIs, OS-volume snapshots, and support for major operating systems. These are attributes of that named service, not universal features of bare metal hosting. Google’s Bare Metal Solution overview describes the offering.

Who manages a bare metal server?

Physical tenancy does not mean the provider manages every layer. A provider may handle facilities, hardware, networking, and infrastructure monitoring while the customer remains responsible for the operating system, applications, and data. Responsibilities differ by product, so establish them before ordering.

For Google’s Bare Metal Solution, Google assigns customers OS configuration and patching, software and applications, data, backups, licensing, application security, and workload monitoring. Its documentation says: “After your Bare Metal Solution server is delivered to you, you are responsible for the configuration and management of your OS, including applying updates and security patches and obtaining support.” Google’s responsibility guidance applies to that service specifically.

IBM likewise instructs customers to patch and secure their bare metal operating system, and warns that servers with public floating IP addresses are internet-facing. IBM’s bare metal documentation explains its service considerations.

  • Confirm who installs, configures, updates, and supports the OS and any hypervisor.
  • Identify who handles firmware, physical security, hardware replacement, networking, and infrastructure monitoring.
  • Assign responsibility for databases, applications, data security, encryption, backups, and incident response.
  • Review service-level commitments, recovery procedures, data-location options, support hours, and software licensing.

Google’s Bare Metal Solution uses a bring-your-own-license model and separates infrastructure support from OS, driver, compatibility, and application support. Those terms are product-specific; verify the selected service’s current contract and responsibility matrix. Google documents its support and licensing boundaries.

How to evaluate cost and choose a service

Do not compare services by headline monthly price alone. IBM’s pricing documentation says its charges can combine server time, operating-system or software charges, selected network speed, bandwidth by gigabyte, internet data transfer, and optional VPC services. IBM lists hourly and monthly billing for on-demand capacity and reserved capacity with term commitments. Its page reports maximum reservation discounts of up to 35% for one-year terms and up to 55% for three-year terms; these are IBM-specific claims, not market-wide savings. Verify current terms directly. IBM’s bare metal pricing page lists its charges and reservation terms.

  1. Measure the workload. Test representative CPU, memory, storage capacity and IOPS, network bandwidth and latency, and accelerator needs.
  2. Confirm the need for physical access. Decide whether dedicated tenancy, host-level control, or a supported hypervisor is necessary; otherwise compare equivalent VMs and managed services.
  3. Model the full cost. Match steady or variable usage to hourly, monthly, or reserved capacity, and include transfer, network, software, support, backup, and licensing costs.
  4. Check delivery and support. Confirm the region, hardware profile, provisioning lead time, maintenance window, SLA, replacement process, and support boundaries.
  5. Assign operational duties. Set owners for OS and application patching, data protection, encryption, backups, and incident response before migrating.

Provider figures should be read in their stated context. IBM says its preset fast-provision servers are ready 30–40 minutes after provisioning; the estimate applies to that service, not all bare metal. Its VPC documentation says provisioning can take 10 minutes or less when resources are available. The same pricing page describes more than 11 million configuration combinations and 20 TB of cost-free bandwidth for IBM’s classic infrastructure offer. These are IBM-specific product claims, not general benchmarks or guarantees; check the live service documentation and terms. IBM’s pricing documentation covers the classic infrastructure figures, and IBM’s service documentation describes its provisioning estimates.
