First check whether the failure happens in one app or across several. In a browser editor, compare keyboard shortcuts with toolbar or menu commands and confirm the document is in editing mode. On a work or school device, an organization’s app-protection policy may restrict transfers. If content appears but its layout changes, that is a formatting issue—not a failed paste.
First, find out where the problem occurs
Try copying and pasting the same harmless text in a second app, if it is safe and appropriate. Note whether the operation fails only in one app, only in a browser, or across multiple apps, and whether nothing appears or the content arrives with changed formatting.

- One app only: Check that app’s editing state, command method, and any relevant app-specific behavior.
- Several apps: Browser permissions, keyboard shortcuts, operating-system clipboard behavior, or a managed-device policy are possible areas to investigate. This pattern narrows the search; it does not identify a cause by itself.
- Content arrives differently: Look at paste-format options and whether the destination supports the content’s structure.
These checks are diagnostic, not proof of a particular platform-wide bug.
In a browser editor, compare shortcuts with menus
For Google Docs on a computer, Google lists Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, and Ctrl+V on PC, and Command+C, Command+X, and Command+V on Mac. Google notes that most browsers restrict web apps’ access to the computer clipboard through menus for security reasons. In Chrome, Google also documents right-click and toolbar Edit menu options; using the menu options requires the Docs Offline extension. See Google’s instructions for copying and pasting in Docs.

If a shortcut works but a menu command does not, that difference is useful: test the documented shortcut rather than assuming the clipboard itself has failed.
Confirm that the document is editable
In Word for the web, Reading view allows copying selected text out of a document, but Microsoft says to choose Edit in browser to paste within the document or select individual words and phrases. Keyboard shortcuts work in Editing or Reviewing mode. The exact behavior can vary among Office web apps. See Microsoft’s Office for the web copy-and-paste guidance.

Microsoft also says Firefox users may need to allow JavaScript clipboard access to use Word’s ribbon commands for copy, cut, and paste. Keyboard shortcuts are an alternative. If the ribbon command fails in Firefox, test the shortcut and check the browser’s relevant permission rather than treating the two methods as identical.
Check work or school clipboard restrictions
Organizations can use Microsoft Intune app-protection policies to control cut, copy, and paste between managed and unmanaged apps. The policy named Restrict cut, copy, and paste between other apps sets which transfers are permitted. Microsoft describes Any app as allowing copy and paste between apps without that restriction; other policy choices limit transfers in particular directions.

For transfers between managed apps, Microsoft also advises checking that the destination document was opened from a managed location, such as OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online. Its guidance says app-protection policies do not apply to unsaved new documents. If you cannot view or change the policy, ask your organization’s IT administrator to check it. If pasting works but the result looks wrong
A paste that inserts content with different formatting is not the same as a paste that inserts nothing. Word offers options to keep source formatting, merge formatting, or keep text only; these affect how formatting and non-text elements carry over. Choose the option that matches the result you need. Office for the web also has application- and destination-specific limits on how content and formatting transfer. Tables, lists, images, or workbook objects may not paste as expected in some cases. If the structure matters, use the destination app’s paste options or a supported insert/import method, as described in Microsoft’s Office for the web guidance.

Use the Clip Studio Paint workaround only for its specific crash
Clip Studio Paint documents a crash that occurs when Undo is invoked after the combined Cut and paste command while a vector line is selected. If that exact sequence matches your problem, the documented workaround is to use separate Cut and Paste commands from the Edit menu or the documented keyboard shortcuts. This is not a general fix for clipboard failures in other apps. The support page says a future update will address the issue but does not name a release. See Clip Studio Paint’s support note.

Why browser editors can behave differently
Web apps operate under browser clipboard rules that can depend on user action or permission. The W3C Clipboard API specification describes clipboard operations in terms of user-initiated copy, cut, and paste actions and related permission or user-activation conditions. That context helps explain why a shortcut, menu command, and native desktop app may behave differently, but it does not diagnose an unnamed app or device. See the W3C Clipboard API specification.
What to include when asking for help
