Cut and paste moves selected content from one place to another. Cutting removes the selection from its original location and places it on the clipboard temporarily; pasting inserts it at a destination. Copy and paste instead leaves the original in place and inserts a duplicate.
What cut and paste means
Cut and paste is a two-step way to move supported content, such as text or an image, within or between documents and apps. First select the item and choose Cut. Then go to the destination, place the cursor or select the insertion point, and choose Paste. The clipboard is the temporary handoff point between those actions.

Microsoft’s style guide defines cutting as moving selected text to the clipboard, while Apple describes the clipboard as the place content is held between cutting or copying and pasting. Microsoft’s definition of cut and paste and Apple’s Mac instructions explain these steps.

In either case, the destination matters: click or place the cursor where the content should go before pasting. Google’s instructions describe these commands for moving or duplicating text and images between files. Google Docs’ copy-and-paste instructions give the corresponding workflow.

How to cut and paste with keyboard shortcuts
In Google Docs on a PC, the shortcuts are Ctrl+X to cut, Ctrl+C to copy, and Ctrl+V to paste. In Google Docs on a Mac, use Command+X, Command+C, and Command+V, respectively.

These are Google Docs shortcuts, not a guarantee that every app or context behaves identically. Apple documents Command+X, Command+C, and Command+V as Mac cut, copy, and paste shortcuts. Why cut may not be available
Cut is not offered for every item in every app. Apple notes that each app determines which items can be cut, copied, or pasted, and when and where those commands are available. If a file or folder cannot be cut in the current context, dragging it to the destination may be an alternative. Availability depends on the app and the selected item, so a disabled Cut command does not necessarily mean the keyboard shortcut is broken.
