Click and Drag: Fix Common Confusion About What It Does

Click and drag means holding a mouse button while moving the pointer, then releasing it. The result depends on the target and the interface.

Click and drag means pressing and holding a mouse button, moving the pointer while still holding it, and releasing the button when you reach the intended point. Depending on what you point at, the gesture can move an item or select text.

How to click and drag

  1. Point at the target. For moving an item, place the pointer over an area the interface allows you to move. For selecting text, place it within the text.
  2. Press and hold the primary mouse button. Keep it down as you move the pointer.
  3. Move to the destination or endpoint. For an item, move it to the new location; for text, move through the range you want selected.
  4. Release the button. This ends the drag and applies the result supported by that interface.

These are common Windows mouse interactions, but the exact behavior depends on the application and the target. A touchpad or another pointer device may support an equivalent gesture; a special mouse is not required.

How a click differs from a drag

A click generally consists of pressing and releasing the button without moving the pointer. A drag keeps the button held while the pointer moves. In Windows guidance, a click takes effect on release and may be canceled if the pointer moves away before release; the active interface determines the specific outcome.

What a drag can do

Move or rearrange an item

When an item is movable, dragging it to a valid location can reposition it. Some interfaces may support dropping an item onto a target to move or copy it; the result depends on that app’s rules.

Select text

Dragging through selectable text can highlight a contiguous range. Start at the desired beginning and release at the intended endpoint.

Why the same gesture can have different results

The interface interprets the gesture based on the target and context. Dragging from a movable element may reposition it, while dragging across text may select it. The mouse button, pointer position, movement, modifiers, and target can all affect what happens. Microsoft’s Win32 interaction guidance explains these distinctions, though that page is labeled Windows 7 guidance and should not be taken as a rule for every modern app.

Using a touchpad or another pointer device

A mouse is one way to perform a drag. Depending on the device and software, a touchpad or another pointer device can support similar pointer interactions. Android Developers’ desktop guidance describes click-and-drag as an immediate pointer-device interaction, including devices that use a scroll wheel or a two-finger touchpad swipe for scrolling; that is platform design guidance rather than a different definition of dragging.

Terminology note

Microsoft’s style guide defines “drag” as holding down a button while moving the mouse and then releasing it. The same guide advises writers not to use “click and drag” or “drag and drop”; that is Microsoft’s editorial preference, not a universal writing rule.
