Keycloak customization covers the login, Admin and Account Consoles, and authentication journeys. Extend a bundled theme and override only what you need; design login flows by reviewing their hierarchy, executions and requirements together. Be careful with the phrase “disabled user”: preventing a broker flow from creating a new account is not the same as disabling an existing account.
What can you customize in Keycloak?
Keycloak supports customization across multiple interfaces, including the login page, Admin Console and Account Console. The theme type you select should match the interface you intend to change. See Keycloak’s introduction to UI customization for the available areas.

Themes can include HTML templates, images, message bundles, stylesheets, scripts and theme properties. Keycloak renders HTML with FreeMarker templates. For most changes, inherit from a bundled theme and selectively override resources rather than replacing broad sets of templates.
How to build and deploy a custom theme

Create a custom theme directory under the server’s themes directory, with a directory for each theme type you plan to customize.

Add a
theme.propertiesfile for each type. Specify the parent theme and any imported resources the theme needs. -
During development, disable theme and template caching so edits are easier to inspect. Once the theme is ready, re-enable caching in production. Keycloak warns that caching has a significant effect on performance.

In the Admin Console, open Realm Settings > Themes and select the custom theme for the relevant theme type.

Keep changes focused. Avoid editing bundled theme files directly; targeted overrides are easier to maintain across upgrades.
Custom templates require particular care during upgrades: compare each override with the corresponding template in the version-matched Keycloak release and update it as needed. A template can also have security implications. Keycloak notes that a malicious FreeMarker template can run code as the Keycloak process, so limit write access to theme directories and theme JARs to trusted operators. How to design an authentication flow
Authentication flows are configured in the Admin Console’s Authentication area. In Keycloak Server Administration Guide 26.8.0, flow behavior is determined by three factors: the flow and subflow hierarchy, the executions within each level, and the requirement assigned to each execution and subflow. These controls work together; changing one without reviewing the others can change which paths run or whether a flow completes.

Adapt an existing flow
The guide supports duplicating an existing flow and modifying the copy. This is often a maintainable starting point when the desired behavior is close to a built-in journey. Inspect the copied hierarchy and requirements rather than assuming the original configuration remains suitable for the new purpose.

A new flow starts with a top-level flow definition, to which you add executions and subflows. Executions may run automatically or pause for interactive user input. Before production, test intended paths, alternative branches and failure cases in an environment that matches the deployed Keycloak version.
Use custom Authenticators when needed
Developers can implement custom Authenticators for specialized behavior and incorporate them into a flow. This adds development and maintenance responsibilities alongside security review; it is not just a console configuration change.

Distinguish first-login and post-login broker flows
Identity-provider settings distinguish First Login Flow, used when a user first logs in through that provider, from Post Login Flow, which can run additional actions after provider login. The distinction matters when configuring broker onboarding; neither setting is a general control for disabling an existing Keycloak account. The versioned Keycloak Server Administration Guide 26.8.0 documents flow configuration and broker behavior.

No. The broker-flow settings described in the administration guide concern automatic creation of a local account when someone arrives through an external identity provider and no matching account exists. They do not establish how to disable a user account that already exists.
Prevent automatic creation during first broker login
For deployments where users are pre-created, such as a read-only LDAP store, the guide describes disabling both Create User If Unique and Confirm Link Existing Account by setting their requirements to DISABLED in the First Broker Login flow. The guide says this is independent of the realm’s self-registration switch. This changes broker onboarding behavior; it is not an account-disable operation.
Constrain broker login to existing users
The guide also describes a first-login design using Detect Existing Broker User and Automatically Set Existing User, both with requirements set to REQUIRED. Configure the identity provider to use that First Login Flow. Automatically associating a broker login with an existing account is a trust and account-linking decision; assess the identity provider and matching behavior carefully before using it.
For an existing disabled account, verify the deployed version
The procedures above do not establish the exact user-level steps for disabling an existing account, the message that user sees at login, or whether existing sessions end. They also do not establish behavior for every user-federation provider. Consult the user-management and REST API documentation matching your deployed Keycloak version before making those changes or relying on session effects.
