Effective customer service makes it easier for people to accomplish what they came to do. Saks Fifth Avenue uses purchase intent to tailor its homepage; Pandora’s AI agent answers routine questions using customer and product context; and Best Buy pairs digital self-service with a route to a person. Together, these examples show that good service is not simply faster automation or more personalization: it is a relevant, connected path to resolution, with human help when needed.
What effective customer experience looks like
A customer experience is the total path a person takes to meet a need, from discovering where to ask a question through getting it resolved. Effective service removes avoidable effort along that path. It recognizes useful context, offers an appropriate next step, and does not force customers to repeat themselves when they switch channels or need a person.

That matters commercially, but the available figures should be read in context. Salesforce reported in 2024 that 88% of customers said good service makes them more likely to purchase again from the same company. This is a survey response showing an association, not proof that a particular service change causes repeat purchases. Salesforce’s sixth State of Service report gathered insights from more than 5,500 service professionals in 30 countries; that professional sample is distinct from the 88% customer figure. Salesforce’s report also quotes Service Cloud executive Kishan Chetan describing service teams as becoming more proactive and productive with data and AI. That is an executive’s characterization, not independent evidence.
Where customers begin also shapes the experience. Gartner reported that 51% of customer service journeys began on third-party platforms such as Google, YouTube, and ChatGPT. The figure came from a survey of 5,801 customers conducted in January and February 2025; Gartner reported 74% among Gen Z customers. As Gartner analyst Keith McIntosh, Senior Principal, Research, in Gartner’s Customer Service & Support practice, put it: “Third-party platforms have become the new front door for customer service.” Gartner’s July 2025 release makes clear why the service journey may start before someone reaches a company’s own support channel.

Four customer experience examples
| Example | Customer need | Experience choice | Human help or context | Reported outcome and evidence scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saks Fifth Avenue | Find relevant products without wading through an irrelevant homepage. | Homepage personalization based on real-time purchase intent. | Relevant intent shapes the digital experience; human escalation is not described in the case study. | Mastercard reported test-period changes in conversion, revenue per visitor, and bounce rate; vendor-published case study. |
| Pandora | Get quick answers to routine service questions such as order status. | AI agent Clara uses order history, product information, and other data. | Agent-first service is described; the figures do not establish that every request is handled without a person. | Salesforce reported monthly conversation volume, autonomous case deflection, and an NPS increase; vendor-published case study. |
| Best Buy | Get digital or voice assistance, or reach a person when self-service is insufficient. | Conversational voice and chat agents support both self-service and handoff. | Callers who need a person can be transferred with relevant background. | Google Cloud reported a transfer-rate reduction; case-study publication date is not stated. |
| Omnichannel journey design | Complete a task across channels without unnecessary effort or restarting. | Optimize the end-to-end journey rather than each channel in isolation. | Carry context forward and provide a suitable human route. | McKinsey provides strategic guidance, not numerical proof for these checks. |
1. Saks Fifth Avenue: personalization tied to purchase intent
A homepage can create friction when it shows content unrelated to what a shopper is considering. Saks used Mastercard Dynamic Yield to personalize its homepage according to customers’ real-time purchase intent. The point of the example is relevance: adapt the experience to a signal that can help the customer find something, rather than adding personalization as a decorative feature.
Mastercard’s 2025 case study reports that during the test period Saks saw a 9.5% increase in conversion rate, a 7% increase in revenue per visitor, and an 18.4% decline in bounce rate. These are Mastercard-reported results for that test, not an independent evaluation or a forecast for other retailers. The case study does not establish how the approach performs in other businesses or identify a human support handoff. Read Mastercard’s Saks case study.
2. Pandora: routine support with a brand-aware AI agent
Some customer questions are predictable and time-sensitive: “Where is my order?” is a straightforward example. Pandora built Clara to handle routine customer-service requests. Salesforce says the agent uses order history, product information, and other data, giving it context to respond rather than treating every question as an isolated prompt.

Salesforce’s October 8, 2025 case study reports 40,000 monthly conversations handled by Agentforce, 60% autonomous case deflection, and a 10% boost in net promoter score with agent-first service. These are figures published by Salesforce, not independently audited results. They do not mean all requests are solved without human support. Read Salesforce’s Pandora case study.
3. Best Buy: self-service that can reach a person
Automation is more useful when it helps customers complete simple tasks and still recognizes when a person is the better next step. Best Buy’s stated aim is to bring the quality of personal service in its stores to digital and voice channels. Google Cloud describes conversational voice and chat agents that support self-service while helping callers who need a person reach a human with relevant background.
Google Cloud reports transfer rates reduced by 1.5% to 2%. The source’s surfaced case study does not state a publication date, so this figure should be attributed to Google Cloud without assigning it a year. The report describes a transfer-rate change; it does not by itself establish how the approach would perform in another company. Read Google Cloud’s Best Buy case study.

4. Omnichannel: design the whole journey
A company can improve chat response time and still leave customers struggling if they have to start over after moving to voice or an online help page. McKinsey argues for designing around end-to-end customer journeys instead of optimizing individual touchpoints—such as IVR, chat, voice, and digital—independently. This is a strategy for evaluating service continuity, not a case study with numerical proof for the checks below. Read McKinsey’s omnichannel analysis.
Recommended Free Tools
- Can a customer change channels without restarting? A shopper who begins with a digital assistant should not have to repeat the same issue when calling.
- Does useful context carry forward? Relevant order or product details can save effort, as Pandora’s use of order history and product information illustrates.
- Can the customer complete the task with minimal effort? A useful interaction resolves the need, rather than merely routing the person through more menus.
- Is there a suitable human route? A customer with a complex or sensitive issue should have a way to reach an employee, ideally with enough background to avoid starting from zero.
How the examples differ—and what their results can tell you
The cases address different problems, so their reported numbers cannot be compared as if they measured one shared definition of success. Saks focuses on shopping behavior during a test. Pandora reports service volume, autonomous deflection, and NPS. Best Buy reports transfers. McKinsey’s guidance is about journey design rather than a measured company outcome. Each metric answers a different question.
| Example | Where context helps | Effort the design aims to reduce | Human route described? | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saks | Real-time purchase intent. | Finding relevant homepage content. | Not described. | Mastercard’s reported results for a test period. |
| Pandora | Order history and product information, among other data. | Getting answers to routine requests. | Not specified in the cited figures. | Salesforce’s reported service and NPS outcomes. |
| Best Buy | Relevant background passed to a person. | Self-serving or reaching a person without losing context. | Yes, in the case-study description. | Google Cloud’s reported transfer-rate change. |
| Omnichannel strategy | Context carried across touchpoints. | Avoiding restarts and unnecessary steps. | Recommended as part of journey design. | Strategic guidance, with no numerical result supplied for these checks. |
These examples are useful as patterns, not a universal ranking. Their sources are the companies or vendors involved, and the measurements have different scopes, populations, and time windows. The figures support describing what those organizations reported; they do not prove that the same tactic will produce the same result elsewhere.

How to recognize effective service in practice
Use the customer’s task as the unit of analysis. A service channel is not successful merely because it is automated, staffed, or fast on its own. Ask whether the full path helped the person finish what they came to do.
- Start with the customer’s actual need. Identify the question or task, such as locating a relevant product, checking an order, or getting help with a complicated issue.
- Use context only when it improves the next step. Purchase intent can make shopping content more relevant; order history can make an order-status answer more useful. Personalization that does not reduce effort is not a customer benefit by itself.
- Match the route to the task. Routine requests may suit self-service. Situations that need judgment or personal assistance require a clear way to reach an employee.
- Keep transitions connected. Check whether information gathered in one channel follows the customer to another, and whether the customer must repeat details.
- Measure the outcome that reflects the need. A retailer may watch whether customers find and buy relevant items; a support team may examine resolution, deflection, or transfers. Do not treat one metric as a substitute for the customer’s ability to complete the task.
- Read results with their source and scope. Distinguish company or vendor case-study findings from independent evidence, and do not compare unlike metrics as a league table.
Common mistakes these examples help avoid
- Personalization for its own sake: A tailored page is valuable when it reflects relevant intent and makes discovery easier—not simply because it uses customer data.
- Deflection as the only goal: A bot that prevents contact but leaves an issue unresolved has not delivered effective service. The customer needs a path to a person when automation is insufficient.
- Channel-by-channel optimization: A polished chat experience cannot compensate for a disconnected handoff or a voice channel that makes the customer repeat the story.
- Turning a case study into a guarantee: Reported results belong to a particular organization, source, and measurement context. They are examples, not universal expected outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an example of a good customer experience?
A good example makes a specific customer task easier while preserving an appropriate next step. Pandora’s Clara uses order history and product information for routine service questions; Best Buy’s design pairs self-service with a route to a person who receives relevant background.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why is personalization part of customer experience?
Personalization can reduce effort when it uses relevant signals to help a customer find or do something. Saks’ homepage example is based on real-time purchase intent; its reported test results are specific to that case and are not a general promise.
What does omnichannel customer service mean?
It means designing connected service across channels so a customer can continue a task without needless repetition, with useful context carried forward and a human route when needed. It is more than offering several separate channels.
Can customer service automation replace human support?
The examples do not establish that it can. Pandora’s reported autonomous case deflection concerns routine requests, while Best Buy’s design explicitly includes a human handoff for callers who need a person.
