It is not a guaranteed upgrade: Steam provides tools to edit layouts and apply community-shared ones, but its support documentation does not compare their performance. Treat a community template as a possible starting point, then test and adjust it for the game and the way you play.
When a custom layout is the better choice
The practical advantage of a custom layout is control over the mapping, not a proven promise of better accuracy or faster play. Steam lets you view and edit a game’s current layout, while also offering configurations shared by the community. Which route makes more sense depends on whether you need a starting point or already know what feels wrong.

| Situation | Practical starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You are new to the game or unsure which mappings work | Browse a Community Layout and treat it as a starting configuration. | Steam provides access to shared configurations, but does not guarantee that one suits your preferences or the game’s supported inputs. |
| You know which controls feel wrong or need a specific mapping | Edit the game’s current layout, then test the changed controls in the game. | Confirm that the game accepts the input style and commands you assign. |
| The game has partial controller support | Use a controller where it works, while checking which tasks still need a keyboard or mouse. | Some menus, setup steps, or interfaces may not be designed for controller-only use. |
How do I make a custom Steam controller layout?
On Steam Deck, Steam Support’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide gives this route to a game’s control settings:
- Select the game in your library and open its details.
- Select the controller icon to open the game’s control settings.
- View or edit the current layout. Steam Support describes this screen as where you can “view and edit your current layout.”
- To inspect shared options instead, select the current template and navigate to Community Layouts.
- Try the changed mapping in the actual game. If an assigned control does not respond as expected, check the game’s supported input style before making further changes.
Steam client and SteamOS labels can change, so the wording or placement may vary by version. These steps describe Steam Deck; they should not be taken as a verified, identical path for every Steam client or controller.

Why a mapping can fail even when it looks right
A layout can only send inputs the game can handle. Steam’s configuration guidance distinguishes between input styles that require gamepad support and flexible styles that can issue keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands.
- Joystick Move and Joystick Camera: These styles require the game to support gamepad input. If it does not, assigning them may not produce the intended movement or camera control.
- Directional Pad and Button Pad: These flexible styles can be assigned keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands, offering another option when a game’s input support differs from the control you want.
When a change fails, check the game’s input support and the command assigned to the control. A mismatch between the selected style and what the game accepts can be the problem; a different community configuration will not necessarily solve it unless it uses compatible inputs.

What full and partial controller support mean
Steam’s Big Picture guidance describes Full Controller Support as allowing a player to download, launch, configure, and play using only a controller, without needing a mouse or keyboard for setup or in-game configuration. With Partial Controller Support, a controller may work during gameplay, while installation, configuration, or parts of the interface may still be optimized for mouse and keyboard.

That distinction matters when deciding what a layout can fix. A custom mapping can change controls, but it does not establish that every menu or setup task can be completed with a controller.

Using another controller or playing on a TV
Steam’s Big Picture support page names Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. It says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported. This is Big Picture guidance, not a guarantee for every controller model, game, or operating system.
Steam Deck can also be used with external controllers and peripherals through a dock or hub. Steam’s docking guidance says most USB-C-compliant hubs and docks work without issue. A dock or external controller is relevant to a TV or peripheral setup, but neither is required to edit a layout.

Choose a starting point, then test the controls
Community Layouts can save you from starting with an empty mapping, while a custom layout lets you address a particular preference or control problem. Use whichever route gets you to a workable configuration, and judge the result in the game itself. Steam’s published support guidance documents the available configuration options and compatibility limits; it does not establish that custom layouts universally outperform community templates.
