Choose Cursor if you want an AI-focused editor, Claude Code if you prefer a terminal-based agent, and GitHub Copilot if you want AI assistance spanning your editor and GitHub workflows. Those are workflow recommendations—not a ranking of code quality. The official product documentation cited here does not establish a controlled head-to-head winner.
The practical question is where you work, how much task delegation you want, and how each product’s current usage terms fit your needs. Their billing and usage meters differ, so a headline price alone cannot establish which costs less for equivalent work.

Which AI coding tool should you use?
Choose Cursor for an editor-first workflow
Cursor is the clearest fit if you want AI features close to the editor where you already read and change code. Its product and pricing materials describe agent-oriented features, cloud agents, and team administration. That makes it a reasonable option for developers who want an AI-centered coding surface rather than a terminal-first experience. It does not demonstrate that Cursor produces better code than the alternatives.

Choose Claude Code for a terminal-first workflow
Claude Code is designed to run from a terminal on your development machine. Its CLI supports interactive use and noninteractive operation, which can suit developers who want to work at the command line or incorporate the tool into scripted workflows. The CLI reference also documents model selection, permission modes, and controls for allowing or denying tools.
Choose GitHub Copilot for editor-plus-GitHub work
Copilot makes sense if your work already moves between a supported editor and GitHub. Its documented features span code assistance, chat, agent mode, code review, cloud agent, CLI, and Apps. The breadth of those surfaces is a workflow consideration, not evidence that it outperforms the other products.

How the agent workflows differ
“Agent” is not a single feature with a shared definition or a common usage allowance. Cursor describes agent features within its editor-oriented product; Claude Code exposes interactive and noninteractive terminal modes; Copilot’s documented set includes agent mode and a cloud agent alongside other GitHub and editor features. Compare what each workflow lets you delegate and what controls you need, rather than treating the label as proof of equivalent behavior.
- Work surface: Decide whether you want to stay primarily in an editor, a terminal, or GitHub-linked workflows.
- Delegation: Consider whether inline assistance and chat are enough, or whether you want to hand off multi-step work.
- Controls and integration: Check compatibility with your editor and repositories, team administration needs, and the permission model you are comfortable with.
- Usage economics: Read how the chosen plan measures use, what it includes, how model choice affects consumption, and what happens when included usage is exhausted.
Why there is no defensible price winner from these sources
The cited pages do not provide a stable, equivalent comparison of current prices and usage across all three tools. Cursor describes included agent usage and model-dependent consumption. GitHub says Copilot features draw on GitHub AI Credits and usage varies by feature or model. Claude Code can be authenticated through Anthropic Console billing or a Claude Pro or Max account, among other enterprise routes. These are different meters and access paths; converting them into one cost-per-task figure would require comparable usage data that the cited documentation does not establish.

For a decision, compare the live plan pages and estimate your own expected use under the relevant product’s terms. Cursor’s pricing documentation distinguishes individual and team plans and separates Bugbot pricing; GitHub’s plan page describes AI Credits and notes that model options can vary by feature. Anthropic’s API pricing page directs readers to its pricing site for current pricing, so an API token table should not be treated as current Claude Code subscription pricing: Anthropic pricing.
What to verify before adopting one
- Cursor: Check the live pricing page and documentation for current plan names, included agent usage, model-dependent consumption, and any separate feature pricing. The vendor’s own usage examples are estimates for Cursor, not a cross-product benchmark.
- Claude Code: Confirm the current setup requirements, supported-country availability, and authentication route that fits your account or organization. The setup documentation lists macOS 10.15+, Ubuntu 20.04+ or Debian 10+, or Windows with WSL or Git for Windows; 4 GB or more of RAM; Node.js 18+; and internet access. These are requirements displayed in the cited documentation and should be checked against its current version. See Claude Code setup.
- GitHub Copilot: Check the live plan page for current limits, entitlements, credit terms, and feature-specific model options. The product page describes a Free allowance, but exact current limits should be taken from the plans page: GitHub Copilot.
Bottom line: choose by workflow, then check the live terms
For an AI-centered editor, start with Cursor; for a terminal-based agent, start with Claude Code; for a workflow spanning supported editors and GitHub, start with Copilot. Treat that as a shortlist, not a performance verdict: no controlled comparison in the cited official documentation establishes which one writes the best code. Before committing, verify the current plan, usage meter, model access, and any platform or country requirements that apply to you.
