If Windows Security crashes when you open Protection History, first check whether Defender is reporting a threat that still needs action. Clearing history or deleting Detections.log does not remove malware. Microsoft documents a retention setting for scan history, but not as a fix for a crashing Protection History page; deleting Defender history folders is an anecdotal community workaround, not an official repair.

Check for a current threat before troubleshooting the history page

Protection History records actions taken by Microsoft Defender, removed potentially unwanted apps, and important security services that are turned off. An old entry does not, by itself, mean a threat is still on the device. If the page opens long enough to inspect an item, review its status and available action. Microsoft says threat details require administrator privileges. If Windows Security says an item needs action, use the event’s Actions menu; if you are unsure whether a file is safe, Microsoft recommends quarantine rather than allowing it.

Clearing records is not malware remediation. Resolve any active detection separately from the crash or file-deletion problem.

Why Protection History and detections.log are different problems

Protection History is the user-facing record of Defender events. Detections.log is a file that may be in use by a running service or protected by Windows permissions. A Microsoft Q&A user reported that Detections.log and a related binary remained in use during a broad cleanup attempt, but that report does not establish that the log causes the page crash or should be force-deleted. A locked file alone is not proof of malware or corruption.

Do not disable protection, take ownership of protected files, or erase the broader Defender Scans directory as routine first steps. The consulted Microsoft documentation does not instruct users to delete Detections.log to repair Protection History.

Choose a response based on what you are trying to fix

Option What it does Evidence and limits
Inspect and act on a current detection Addresses an active threat through the event’s available action; it does not repair a crashing history page. Microsoft Support guidance: Protection History in Windows Security.
Set scan-history retention Changes how long scan-history items are kept; it does not claim to repair an existing crash or directly remove an active threat. Documented Defender PowerShell setting: Set-MpPreference.
Delete the Service or DetectionHistory folder Erases history records rather than remediating malware; reported as a workaround for similar crashes. Community advice in Microsoft Q&A threads, not an official Microsoft fix; outcomes vary. Related crash discussion and another reported workaround.
Force-delete detections.log Targets an individual file; no established benefit for the crash. The available report describes the file as in use, not an official instruction to force removal. detections.log discussion.

Use Defender’s documented retention control only for retention

Microsoft documents Set-MpPreference -ScanPurgeItemsAfterDelay as the setting that specifies how many days items are kept in the scan-history folder. Microsoft’s Defender PowerShell reference states a default of 15 days when no value is specified. A separate Microsoft Defender for Endpoint example sets retention to 30 days; that is an example configuration, not the default. Microsoft Support describes Protection History as retaining events for two weeks before they disappear from the list. These figures come from different documentation contexts, so they should not be treated as one universal retention promise.

For the exact parameter syntax and applicable details, consult Microsoft’s Set-MpPreference reference and its Defender for Endpoint remediation guidance. Changing retention affects future history cleanup behavior; Microsoft does not document it as a repair for a page that crashes.

Before trying a community-reported folder workaround

Some Microsoft Q&A replies for similar crashes suggest deleting files under C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows DefenderScansHistoryService or its DetectionHistory subfolder. Other replies mention Safe Mode. These are community-generated suggestions, not a Microsoft-supported repair procedure, and reports include unsuccessful or recurring problems.

  • First determine whether Windows Security reports an active detection needing action; do not substitute history deletion for remediation.
  • Record the Windows version and build, Defender platform and security intelligence versions, the exact crash behavior, and any coincident Application log error. The available reports do not identify a universal cause.
  • Understand that removing history files loses records, and that a deletion attempt may fail because a file is in use or protected.
  • Do not force-delete Detections.log or broaden the cleanup to protected Defender folders based solely on a similar online symptom. If the problem is reproducible, use system-specific support and treat folder deletion only as an unofficial, variable-outcome workaround.

What to conclude if the page still crashes

The crash alone does not establish that malware is present, that Detections.log is corrupt, or that deleting history will fix the interface. Microsoft documents how Protection History works and how scan-history retention can be configured, but the cited guidance does not identify the cause of this crash or prescribe log deletion. A suitable next step depends on the device’s build, error details, current detection status, and whether the file is actually locked.
